Farrow and Ball whites

Agh so the decorator wants to buy the paints on the way in tomorrow (though he is doing a mist coat first). Coming to the end of full house renovation, so full house being decorated. North facing rooms and south facing rooms.

Ive tested Wevet, Ammonite, Strong White and Wimborne White. I’m totally decision fatigued but don’t have the time to spend looking in different lights etc.

I like Wevet, Strong White and Wimborne. Wevet I’m concerned is too ‘pure white’ and other two I’m concerned might look yellow or magnolia.

Can anyone help me come to a decision? 🙈 I’m wondering about Wevet for the south facing and Wimborne for the north facing rooms?

Thankyou all for your thoughts and experiences.

So down to strong white or Wevet.

We tried several F and B whites, wasn't impressed and read they were poor quality and only popular because of the marketing. We went with Dulux Timeless white and I love it.

Maybeicanhelpyou · 28/02/2024 20:32

I had timeless in my kitchen, it’s nice, but tends to yellow compared with strong white

Lifebeganat50 · 28/02/2024 20:33

I’ve had timeless in both a north and a south facing room and hated it in both-in the north it’s yellow, and in the south it’s green….Ive never repainted rooms so fast!

Has anyone tried Dimity?

Snoozymoozy · 28/02/2024 20:35

We have wimborne in our north facing rooms and it's perfect, just a nice warm white but not yellow. And we have strong white in the south facing rooms - love this colour!

I used to love F&B but I'm now a Little Greene convert! Much wider choice and the quality of the paint is amazing. We've just painted our kitchen-family room in Wood Ash and it's lovely!

Wimborne, but I like the subtle hint of yellow/sunshine. Definitely isn't magnolia. If the house is old/classic Wimborne should work. Agree with a previous poster, it changes beautifully with the light and looks soft.

I have black blue cupboards, wood tiles and slaked lime... its a white thats not white but absolutely delicious in a South facing room.

Slaked lime is little green though

Recently painted our north facing living room in Wimborne white with woodwork in all white. Love the Wimborne- previously had Timeless in there which was too creamy/taupey. Wimborne is lovely- not at all yellow- the room feels so much brighter

All our ceilings, cornice, trim and skirting is Wimborne White. All walls are Schoolhouse White. Love the combo.

Does anyone have All White? If so what's it like?

i have some testers - I find Wimborne White a tiny bit too yellow and Wevet a tiny bit too beige on some walls. Really want a more neutral cream shade.

I've just had ceilings in a room and a bathroom painted in All White, in the bathroom it's also on the walls above the tiles. It's a perfect white, not stark and I wouldn't say it's cream, but it looks creamier the white tiles. It is softer than the "builder's white" they used on the doors and skirting boards; they painted them so fast I didn't manage to let them know I want to choose the colour for them too.

Thank you! That's helpful.
i think I'm going to go for Wimborne white this time and see how it looks!

PinkCamelias · 10/05/2024 17:49

I'm sure it will look great! I will use it in some rooms, and definitely on all the other doors and trims, as I have it on one floor already (previous owner's choice).

Btw I had a guest bedroom painted Cornforth White in dead flat, and it's really amazing, so if you're wondering which finish to choose, I can recommend it. Of course it's brand new, so no idea how it will stand the test of time.

This is a north facing bathroom I did a few months back, not the lightest of rooms. Walls are strong white, door and architrave is James white and ceiling just normal Dulux white.

edit to add, the strong white doesn’t come across at all yellow or magnolia. James white is slightly creamy.

Has anyone tried Dimity?

I’ve just had DD2s north facing bedroom colour washed (ceiling to floor) in Dimity and love it. The room was ammonite previously as she insisted on grey but it was so cold. It’s now a much warmer feel.
@sheeplikessleep I’m another who would suggest to stay away from the grey based colours (Wevet, ammonite etc) in your north facing rooms as they can feel colder. Wimbourne works well on north rooms though.

Possiblynotever · 10/05/2024 19:29

I did north facing in Amnonite and the South facing in Dimity. Lovely and wierdly they look much the same. The light changes everything

Lonelycrab · 10/05/2024 20:13

Just a quick comment re colour matching.

And btw I’ve often used Johnstones from Brewers colour matched to F&B with mostly success, a few I’ve had have been shockingly bad though, thankfully the customer didn’t complain.

I’ve come round to thinking that genuine FB does have a certain depth to the colour and is effected by light changes that sometimes the colour match doesn’t, kind of hard to explain. In the scheme of renovation costs, and extra 20 quid isn’t here nor there. This is for modern emulsion, not the difficult to apply super flat finish estate emulsion though.

That’s just my experience after doing dozen of rooms.
