Hi all,

Please help me choose the best layout or improve it?

Teenage DS15

Facts:
Tiny box room

Built in wardrobe left of door (can't be changed)

Radiator on right wall (can't be changed)

Which version would you go for?
Versions attached

Any other suggestions?

Single bed or small double?
Storage bed?

Many thanks in advance!

I would look at a full height radiator behind the bedroom door, also a desk that is so wide it would go over the end of the bed as well.

Will look see if I can find an image.

A or D and a storage bed. The other two make the room feel cramped IMO.

I would ask your DS re single vs small double/queen. He's old enough to have an opinion. I'm currently in hospital so am in a single for the first time in years. I hate it because I can't spread out, and I'm only a small 5 foot 2. Assuming your DS is taller (and obviously still growing) I'd probably opt for small double or queen, unless he sleeps in a position that means it really makes no odds.

I'd get a decent sized desk, at least big enough for laptop/desktop plus notepad/printouts by the side and whatever stationery he needs. I WFH on a desk that's too small and it's a pain in the arse. I'd also look for a desk with a drawer underneath for less used stationery (stapler, post its etc) plus things like a calculator as well as printouts etc that aren't being used immediately but need to be retained for revision.

Definitely A or D and definitely an ottoman side lifting storage bed. They are amazing and fit so much in. And they’re v easy to access - we have a king size one and are opening it up and closing it all the time getting things in and out. It opens up fine with the bed made up. Storage drawers are tiny in comparison and with a desk there they’d be hard to slide out.

If you’re going to be living there a while, I’d go for small double. That way when he leaves home but comes back later with a girl/boyfriend they’ve got a bed they can stay in, or it’s better for guests.

But see what max desk size you can manage with for either bed. Can you get wall shelves above the desk for extra storage? Even a small desk can work well if it’s kept clear.

Our small room is v similar in layout. We have the D arrangement with my DH’s WFH desk where you have yours, and a single bed that we expand out to a double when guests come to stay. We’ve had various beds in different arrangements over the years in there and it’s much better with the bed in the A or D arrangement. More useable floor space.

Is there room for anything to go over the end of the bed? It’s only 10-20 cm or so, and with our bed like this, that space is quite useful for getting the sheets on. I suppose you could build a sort of shelf thing for book / lamp storage, so it doesn’t overflow onto the desk?

Thanks for your reply, yes indeed I was planning to add shelves above the desk.

It seems the options with the bed along the window wall are the most popular. I agree it feels more spacious. I will need to find a good sturdy desk, that is comfortable to work at.
