Hi all,

Please help me choose the best layout or improve it?

Teenage DS15

Facts:
Tiny box room

Built in wardrobe left of door (can't be changed)

Radiator on right wall (can't be changed)

Which version would you go for?
Versions attached

Any other suggestions?

Single bed or small double?
Storage bed?

Many thanks in advance!

If storage bed - what is more convenient, ottoman or drawers? Thank you!

Would a higher than usual cabin bed work?

Depends what you store in it. If it's out of season stuff, ottoman. If you need to access it freely drawers.

I've never had either, just use a normal bed wit h drawers underneath.

What rooms are next door? We moved the wall between the box room and the master to make a larger box room. Would this be an option?

@CJ4713 Can I ask how much it cost? We are considering doing the same but unsure if it is worth financially. Also, we would do it between two small rooms, so a bit worried we may end up with two not very useful rooms.

CJ4713 · 17/02/2024 19:57

@Crampulet Sorry, I don't know how much moving the wall costs us. It was 10+yrs ago and a relative is a builder, so he helped DH knock through the wall and build the new one.

I have an ottoman bed and it has so much storage. So easy to open to get what I need as well (unless the three kids are lying in the bed at the time)

My box room is similar dimensions to yours, maybe a bit smaller and I've been thinking of getting a small double for it when the kids are older.

@CJ4713 Thank you!

None of them, I'd put the bed on the other wall.

Or put a chair where the desk is on my plan and have a high sleeper bed with desk under.

Ilovemyshed · 17/02/2024 20:14

And get rid of the built in wardrobe.

OneSecond · 17/02/2024 20:15

E - which is like B but with the bed and the desk swapped around so that the desk is by the window with more light and the bed is in the cosy corner.

OneSecond · 17/02/2024 20:19

You could get a corner desk too to make it a bit bigger.

OneSecond · 17/02/2024 20:21

Sorry just noticed that B has a double bed. So I would go for plan E being C with bed and desk swapped, and a corner desk. Single bed is plenty.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 17/02/2024 20:24

How wide is the room, would a European length bed fit without a gap? It might actually make the room look better if the whole end wall is bed.

As for single vs double it really depends on how big the teen is, my 17 year old is 5ft 10 and very slender and a single would be fine, some of his friends are huge and would need a bigger bed.

As for desk, get as big as you can, by the time you have a laptop, a text book, pad of paper …. It can get crowded.

crumpet · 17/02/2024 20:26

Ds has a lift up storage bed which is excellent. You can find ones that lift at the side as well as those which lift from the end. I’d go do a small double

Baxdream · 17/02/2024 20:27

I think B. Mine barely use their desks. However, my DD had a serious boyfriend by 17 who stayed regularly so I would consider this too (I know it's hard to think about at 15!)

crumpet · 17/02/2024 20:27

If the bed goes agains the window (eg A) but isn’t long enough then build in shelves all the way up to fill the space

headcheffer · 17/02/2024 20:45

Does your DS use a laptop or PC? I ask because if it's a laptop I would go with A but put the desk over the radiator with the laptop on a riser so it doesn't get hot from the radiator. Chasing in a socket if you don't have one there would be inexpensive. Then your DS could also use the desk as a bedside table to put water glass on at night etc and would have a bit more floor space.

Is that an option?

Laptop. Yes thanks that's an option, I will explore that.

Something like this
https://www.wayfair.co.uk/furniture/pdp/17-stories-enijah-european-single-90-x-200cm-platform-bed-u003286984.html

the total length is 204cm which should fit in with the skirting boards well. There is a 3/4 pull out drawer which is very practical.

Thank you

I also really like a big desk but my DS rarely sits on his desk - but might change with GCSES and A-levels?

Of your options, D looks best to me. But if there's any way of getting rid of the fitted wardrobe, I think the bed would look best there (facing the window and with the table as in B and C).
