Hello can you advise me on areas of Sheffield please? I'm swapping my council house to Sheffield and hoping to buy one day so Dore, for instance, would probably be out of budget (in the future).

We don't need access to education and are not shoppers or sociable joiners and drive so probably less constrained than a lot of people.

I'm just looking for somewhere safe, quiet and green with lots of places for dog walks. Safe and not too trafficky are the main criteria.

I'm thinking of S12, i know it's not chichi but that's fine. Do you see it as safe and green? We're very quiet people and unlikely to attract attention.

Budget and type of housing would be helpful wouldn't it 😅

I'd be hoping for something with an open market value of no more than £200k and £175k would be better (for when I can eventually buy). It would have to be at least 2 bedrooms and a semi detached with private front and back garden.

As far as I can tell, S12 seems to fit those requirements.

Hi @Neveralonewithaclone , I live in Sheffield but don’t know the S12 area, I’m afraid . However from a quick look at Rightmove it seems to include Hackenthorpe and Gleadless so should be plenty of council houses to swap to in those areas.

One thing to be aware of is that Sheffield is a very socially stratified city - even more than most others - and you might encounter a bit of a snobby attitude from better- off middle class people if you live in what they perceive to be the less ‘good’ areas. The very solidly MC areas are S10, S11, and areas in the southwest of the city such as Totley and Dore, whatever postcode those are. Also S7 though that’s a bit more mixed. Likewise Walkley (S6) and Hillsborough - mixed. Not assuming this would bother you of course, and I think that sort of attitude is crap…

As to safety, I think some bits of S12 eg Gleadless have a lot of poverty/ social deprivation so maybe could have higher crime levels but I don’t really know. Overall Sheffield is a really friendly place - I didn’t grow up here but I love it.

Stannington, Rivelin, are both quite rural
Parts of Barnsley are also rural.
Outighbridge and Wharncliffe side are also rural

Neveralonewithaclone · 10/02/2024 18:21

Thank you both, i was looking at Wharncliffe Side, it looks perfect, very lovely.

S5 9lu and s124rg

Could you give me your opinion on these two areas please? I'm going to view them both next week

I live S12 at charnock estate. Wouldn’t be my first preference of areas but was priced out of others. It’s absolutely fine, there are some areas which have a bad rep…gleadless valley for example. But gleadless townend seems better than valley. Brought 3 bed semi in 2020 for £170k you will struggle to get something on the estate for that now. There are also some council houses I believe. It backs onto fields and can walk down through the woods, it’s pretty quiet though just a coop and a pub. But easy to access graves park from here

Neveralonewithaclone · 18/02/2024 18:56

Thank you very much ♥️

Gleadless Townend is fine. Avoid gleadless valley though.

S5 is ok. Parson cross area ok.

Keepingongoing · 18/02/2024 21:18

Parson Cross area was a huge council estate. Now probably more mixed ownership/rented - I used to live very near it and remained with the same dentist, so drive through the area occasionally. My impression is that some roads are very cared for. You’d have to look round to get an idea. You’re handy for the Northern General and the A+E for the whole city. Short car drive to Greno Woods which would be excellent for walking your dogs.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/02/2024 22:19

I wouldn’t live in Parsons Cross.

4catsaremylife · 18/02/2024 22:32

Warncliffe side is okay but be aware S36 is poorly served by public transport.
S5 is a massive area with really different socioeconomic areas, Page Hall can be difficult, Firth Park, Firvale, Sheffield lane top, all have large HA and LA housing, city centre only 20 to 30 minutes away.
Personally I love living out in the wilds, snow and all, but I don't have teenagers and I run a car

Cedricsmum · 18/02/2024 23:44

I was brought up in S12 and my parents still live there. Would definitely avoid Gleadless Valley but everywhere else is nice enough. There’s a nice park at Hollinsend and I still walk there when I visit.
I would honestly avoid S5 like the plague. No comparison to S12. Not nice.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/02/2024 08:52

Wisdewood is nice.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/02/2024 08:54

Or you could try for Lodge Moor! Poshest council in U.K!😁. Loads of country.

Lodge Moor doesn’t have its own council, and I wouldn’t say it is the poshest area in Sheffield! It is very rural though.

The Bents Green area is near the Peak District.

I meant to say poshest council estate in Sheffield.

This is very rural. Overlooks the country. Loads of walks. Nice country. On a good bus route and nice safe area.

I've narrowed it down, I'm now viewing S35 0pq and s124rg

Strangely I feel it in my water that s12 is more us, the house is very close to Silkstone Ravine which looks like a handy dog walk. The S35 one is right in front of Greno Park.

I love Sheffield, it's really beautiful.

OP posts:
PJ04JCW · 19/02/2024 19:11

I wouldn't go anywhere in S5 or Frecheville/Silkstone.
I used (in 2021) to do community care there and was anxious working alone after dark.
Go for the S10 one though!
If I had to choose from what's available on Sheffield property shop right now, I'd go for Lowedges, High Green, Greystones, Walkley, maybe Langsett.
Good luck!

Cedricsmum · 19/02/2024 19:20

Out of the two I’d go for Frechville. Always found it ok around there and good for public transport etc.
S35 is also ok. Go and view and see how you feel.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/02/2024 19:48

This is the country next to the S10 one. Literally across the road

S35 is nice but a long way out.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/02/2024 19:59

If you're looking as far out as Wharncliffe Side, Stockbridge might be worth a look. The public transport issue still stands, but the facilities/shops are far superior as opposed to Wharncliffe Side (no offence meant)

Neveralonewithaclone · 19/02/2024 20:07

I don't mind at all about transport, I wfh and I'm absolutely not sociable. I'd drive anywhere for a quick top up shop, otherwise use Tesco delivery and buy everything else on the Internet. I'm only looking for easy access to dog walking areas and not getting stabbed 😂 (no offence).

'Poshest" council housing in Sheffield is Totley or Dore. Right on edge of the Peak District National Park. Also good access to Ecclesall Woods, good parks in both, Blackamoor SSSI etc. Lots to do.

Glenthebattleostrich · 19/02/2024 20:27

S35 has some lovely areas. I'd definitely look at Barnsley, a friend of mine has a council house in Worsborough overlooking beautiful countryside, I am so jealous of her views!!! There are gorgeous walks there.

I live S75 and am close to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, beautiful countryside walks and our house 5 miles down the road would cost 60k more!!
