Single discoloured tile

We have a single tile just above the bath (there is a shower above)that has become discoloured and is obviously wet.
A plumber came and claimed he'd never seen this before (Confused)and that we had two options. The first was to replace the sealant around the bath and hope the tile eventually dries.
The second was to rip out some tiles (they are quite big ones) replace the gyproc behind and retile. This would look really odd due to the current tile pattern and the price quoted was £470. We opted for option one though with some scepticism that the tile would dry out( how would the moisture get out?).
While I was out the plumber came and replaced the sealant only around the half of the bath that the tile is on. For £90 I expected the whole lot to be resealed. Also there was a bit of discoloured sealant that was behind central taps that he didn't replace. Dh seemed to think this was ok.
Am I being unreasonable in thinking it can't possibly that uncommon for one tile to be wet and also that he should have replaced all of the sealant?

well it’s too late now if DH was ok with it, paid for it and he’s left already. Even if not reasonable, nothing you can do about it and no point haranguing dh about it 🤷‍♀️

shewasrooting · 02/02/2024 15:33

£90 is my plumbers call out fee before he’s done a thing

Obliv · 02/02/2024 15:52

Thanks for your reply. I haven't paid yet and not haranguing dh 😁 it's helpful to hear about the call out fee.
I really just wondered if anyone else had a similar issue and if I was unreasonable to expect they'd reseal the whole way around. Maybe I'll have to watch a video and have a go myself!

He's coming round for payment later.

So would a full reseal normally be £180? Sorry if it seems I am being unreasonable 😔. Yes option 2was a lot more. I was thinking I'd rather just go the whole way and retile the whole bathroom (once we'd saved up enough to do that) if the tile didn't dry. It seems a waste to have to retile the whole lot due to one tile that's all!

He asked for cash payment and I was out getting it when he came. I'd have happily paid by bank transfer.
He didn't quote a call out fee just the full amount.

Dh didn't have any cash on him

No it was a different person who saw the job originally

Someone came out and looked at the problem gave the options, we opted for option 1. He gave us price last night said the plumber would come round today but didn't say when. I went out to pick up the cash and the job was done while I was out

I'm not sure what I've done wrong here?

Thanks for the replies. I hope it doesn't sound sarcastic to say it's obvious I'm being unreasonable! 😁

I didn't realise it wasnt for a full reseal

OP posts:
Obliv · 02/02/2024 16:44

The price isn't really the issue. It's that I thought the price was to reseal the whole way round. Probably dh didn't explain that to me properly

Also I wondered if it was surprising to see just one discoloured tile. It must be! Makes me wonder now if something else is the cause!

Not sure why you're being scolded so much! It would've taken minutes to remove the rest of the sealant and replace and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a full clean application. I've resealed myself many times op, you fill the bath halfway with cold water to push the weight down then you begin. I don't have any advice about the one tile, I hope it resolved for you

Obliv · 02/02/2024 17:01

Thank you @shatandfattered (love your name) I do feel scolded but to be honest I seem to upset everyone around me these days even when I try really hard to be nice! I've looked up a few videos so I'll certainly try it myself. If I'd known in advance I'd have done this from the start!

Thanks @bottlerecycle1 (also a good name!). I'll do just that!
