Has anyone here painted their fridge?

I have a wonderful full height freestanding fridge. I love it, it functions beautifully, has tonnes of space and it just great (also only 4 years old and was £££)

The only problem is it's white, and it's not a thing of beauty. I've been looking up painting fridges and I feel tempted. Has anyone done it? Was it easy? How did it turn out? How has it stood up to everyday use?

😃

Take a look on the frenchic paint FB page, loads of ideas on there re painting household items.

TheChippendenSpook · 30/01/2024 20:48

I want to paint mine. My old one broke and I had to get a white one. It doesn't match the rest of my kitchen and I'm tempted to paint it but I'm scared of it going wrong.

PamelaParis · 30/01/2024 20:49

Thought about it, googled it, decided life was too short and I would just live with a white fridge!

OldTinHat · 30/01/2024 20:50

I wouldn't risk painting a fridge but could you wrap it with vinyl instead, maybe?

EbonyRaven · 30/01/2024 20:50

Most fridges are white. Confused It's a very generic colour.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 30/01/2024 20:52

I wouldn’t paint it. I would put some sticky vinyl wrap on it. I had lots of fun tarting up some cupboards with it.

I painted a previous tall white fridge a vintage cream with black handles. I sanded it first to roughen the surface then sprayed it about 5 or 6 times (can't remember the make - sorry). I finished it with a couple of coats of spray satin acrylic varnish. I used enamel paint for the handles. It looked fabulous!

I wrapped mine with vinyl- then did a few other machines too! It's a rental place so I can't do too much but in theory this comes off without damage....

Me too - I'm terrified or ruining an expensive thing and then having to live with it...

I had my old one sprayed once.. by a kind friend who was a car sprayer.. had it done green.. to match my 1980s kitchen.

Copperoliverbear · 30/01/2024 23:16

Or maybe vinyl wrap it

Orangejuggler · 30/01/2024 23:21

This has all the hallmarks of a massive headache OP. I know there’s primers for painting plastic, but am not sure how good they are…I recently painted some plastic garden chairs and coverage is bumpy in places and starting to peel in others. I was so careful with it too.

have you thought about covering it magnets with the kid’s art work and star of the week certificates? That’s what I’ve done and you’d never guess the colour!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 30/01/2024 23:24

I painted my fridge and my freezer ( both under counter) to look like columns (they were supporting the work surface). I washed them thoroughly, then decreased with white spirit, then just used household satin oil paint and a bit of acrylic. We thought they looked great, the whole room was a bit Roman themed. It didn’t come off when cleaned normally.

As a serial painter of things, ( I once tortoiseshelled a fan heater) I think it is much better or easier to do a broken paint finish on household objects. You will never get such a perfect finish as a factory spray, especially on a large object.

Vinyl I presume is sticky back plastic, of which I have several rolls, left over and waiting🫣. It’s durable and will come off if you get tired of it, though it can be difficult not to get air bubbles trapped beneath on large areas.

But go for it. Life is too short for boring objects.

I mean, I’d say it took about an hour. I see it ever single day so it’s money well spent. Chalk paint all the way

Newstarto · 30/01/2024 23:27

You don’t have to sand it (makes no sense) you literally put about two coats of chalk paint on and job done

maltesefiction · 30/01/2024 23:42

Did mine. Like others said, just a lick of paint and it will be as good as new.

SaltyGlasses · 31/01/2024 07:07

Fab - so it's possible and not crazy! I'm excited. I agree that life is too short for boring objects 😁
