Is this reasonable for fitted wardrobes (esp if we sell in a couple of years)?

We've been quoted £8500 by a local builder and just under £8000 by one of the big chains for fitted wardrobes in our master bedroom. Do these prices seem reasonable? We're in north London, so not expecting it to be cheap, but also a bit hesitant to spend so much.

I'm also keen to sell in a year or two, so part of me just wants to put the money towards a new deposit for a house in the area I really want to be living in.

But our current storage / wardrobe arrangement is a real mess and very mismatched as it's mostly old stuff from years of renting. It would do us no favours showing the room as it is.

Thoughts / ideas appreciated.

I just got a 2metre bank of Ikea Pax wardrobes - 2x50cm either side of a 100 cm unit. I went door free but it was less than €1,800 (I've bought so much furniture recently, it could be well under that). Fully kitted out with hanging racks, shelves, lots of drawers etc.

Doors would probably add €250 or less. There are also nice lighting options (if you have doors). I also spent €500 on someone to assemble it and some other furniture.

Hi ILOVEMYSHED

Sorry I don't know how to quote you
But we used and are currently still using Armis Carpentry in Huntingdon
He's done full wall of fitted wardrobes
Either side of our chimney breast in the front room bottom cupboard and floating shelves
And currently finishing a new staircase and under storage

We used Hammonds for 4 fitted wardrobes. I'm very impressed with the quality. It cost about 5k I think. We also asked a local carpenter who quoted us 15k for the same style. I appreciate the work that must go into it (it took the Hammonds guy 3 days) but 15k was insane.

Anyone care to guess why a row of wardrobes is about as expensive as a fitted kitchen (without white goods, plumbing and electrics)?

I cannot get over the prices some are quoting. What is so specialised about wardrobes!

Also, they are not solid oak doors.

Friends of ours have a bedroom that’s got a sloping roof. A local builder/carpenter made one wall into a fitted wardrobe run. It’s on an internal wall. So there’s no carcass, the back is the wall. It’s all solid wood. Absolutely beautiful job and none of that loss of character that you get with so many of the big firms.

Pax are good & last a long time. I’m honestly stunned at these prices too. No way I’d spend more than £1000 on this project.

A carpenter can put some doors up easily
Our did our room and DD for about 1k 7 years ago.

My mind is absolutely blown by the price of fitted wardrobes.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 05/02/2024 13:48

That's ridiculous price, more so if you will move house, especially with house prices falling. Just get Ikea Pax or a freestanding wardrobe.

I recently had a wall of fitted wardrobes. The quotes by big names including Hammond’s came in much higher than a local carpenter who did a beautiful job for £3K (not painted). I’m in SE England.

Can you advise what company that was please? I am in South London.

BronwenTheBrave · 15/04/2024 22:03

I wanted built in bookcases. 3 quotes at £2.5K. So I built them myself. £500.
I’ll do your wardrobes for £1500.

Skills and labour time.

I had some built in bookshelves constructed last year for £2800 including painting. That was the cheapest quote by far, lovely guy, but if they had been in wood they would have been 10k+.

It’s mumsnet perpetual astonishment loop. Read a kitchen thread on the same with one spending 100k for an instagram looking one and others doing it for 1k with a second hand EBay cabinets and white goods fitted by the SIL.

A local company just quoted us £1800 for a wall of fitted wardrobes (north east). I thought that was expensive, now I'm thinking it was a bargain 😆

PM’d you!

We’ve just bought a 243cm tall wardrobe, a smaller one and a chest of drawers. It came in a million pieces and DH has built the big one and the chest of drawers so far. Cost about £1500. The small wardrobe will go in our bedroom and everything else, plus a dressing table, is in bedroom 3. It’s a new house and we moved last month.

I had my bedroom done last year, and found a local carpenter who made the units himself and fitted them. Two double full height wardrobes, with a run of cupboards above the bed, 2 bedside tables and a run of 9 drawers (3x3), including the bottom ones being extra deep for jumpers, jeans etc (like pan drawers you get in kitchens!) - all supplied and fitted for £2800. Absolutely chuffed with them.

Caveat - I did also have to have the whole room replastered and a new ceiling as the walls were shocking and the ceiling was the most disgusting floral plasterwork you’ve ever seen. That was an extra £1400! But well worth it.

@ScoobyDoesnt i know this is a very old post now just wondering if you're still on here and happy to share contact of your carpenter? 😉

ScoobyDoesnt · 19/01/2025 16:49

Hi@MsW2 - sorry have also just seen your PM too. I’m not in London I’m afraid, so the guy I used won’t be any good for you!
