Is this reasonable for fitted wardrobes (esp if we sell in a couple of years)?

We've been quoted £8500 by a local builder and just under £8000 by one of the big chains for fitted wardrobes in our master bedroom. Do these prices seem reasonable? We're in north London, so not expecting it to be cheap, but also a bit hesitant to spend so much.

I'm also keen to sell in a year or two, so part of me just wants to put the money towards a new deposit for a house in the area I really want to be living in.

But our current storage / wardrobe arrangement is a real mess and very mismatched as it's mostly old stuff from years of renting. It would do us no favours showing the room as it is.

Thoughts / ideas appreciated.

No way if you are moving in a few years

Buy some Ikea Pax to make it look better for now. Save yourself 7k plus.

steppingout · 27/01/2024 15:39

You could look at Ikea Pax for a cheaper option. We bought these and then boxed it out so it looked like a fully fitted system. We painted the doors to match the walls. Probably took us a day or so to built the units, a day to fit and a day to box it all out.

We found the receipt.for two lots of sharps wardrobes from 2017 in our house....
£9.5k 😱😱😱

They aren't even nice!

I agree with Pax and a good carpenter so it looks clean
OR if you have a fancy £1m+ house go for the builder /carpenter option and get them custom fitted

We had amazing fitted wadrobes supplied and installed by Hammonds last year. 2 Large ones with hanging rails top and bottom and 1 large middle one with shelves. They also have large cupboards above each one (we have 18 feet ceilings. They quoted £5300 and I said I was willing to pay £4000, they agreed. Really impressed with the qauality and amazing service. This was in Glasgow.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/01/2024 15:42

We had a quote of £7k to.put fitted wardrobes in our bedroom.

I then got a quote to have the loft boarded, a loft hatch created and a pull down loft ladder with proper treads and handrail fitted. The quote was £1400.

We went with that option, put a heavy duty clothes rail and dust cover up there, and put all out of season clothes plus all "special.occaaion" outfits that I wear once in a blue moon up there. We had a really big loft hatch created so that we can also put suitcases etc up.there as well.

No regrets plus we saved over £5k.

Comefromaway · 27/01/2024 15:44

How long is a piece of string.

my daughters were a lot cheaper with Hammonds 2.5 years ago. It was a complicated design but it was there cheapest range.

Ours were slightly less but was fir their top of the range painted wood with glass doors and upholstered window seat.

MurderBot · 27/01/2024 16:00

A local company just quoted us £1800 for a wall of fitted wardrobes (north east). I thought that was expensive, now I'm thinking it was a bargain 😆

Seaside3 · 27/01/2024 16:02

I'd go with ikea. You can get doors made if you want a different look, or, we had a long run wardrobes my husband made and we just put really nice curtains up. Sounds weird, but it looked good. I even incorporated a little dressing table/desk at one end.

Jessforless · 27/01/2024 16:03

That looks great!

Bkjahshue · 27/01/2024 16:05

How many doors? We got 2 door sliding wardrobes for 3.5K from a big company. I’d just get a normal wardrobe or Ikea one if you’re going to be moving

Lifebeganat50 · 27/01/2024 16:10

I wouldn’t spend that if I was going to be moving, you’ll never recoup it. As others have said, IKEA pax, and if you’re not handy yourself, pay a handyman to put them up, you’ll save thousands.

i was recently quoted £6k for fitted, I’ve spent £240 on Ikea PAC carcasses ti fill the same run. I’ll be another £360 for doors next month, so I’ll have saved 90%

RokaandRoll · 27/01/2024 16:11

I've decided on IKEA Pax for our new home. I've been looking at "hacks" online and it appears to be fairly easy to make them look like built-ins by adding some trim along the top. So much cheaper than Sharps and the like, and the reviews are good for the quality of the wardrobes also.

We're thrilled

I'd look for made to measure flat pack. We looked at Fittingly and went with Online Bedrooms for a floor to ceiling almost 3 m run with six doors. Cost about £2k a few months ago (with a 15% off sale I think) and we're really happy with it. They do all kinds of inside storage such as drawers, shelves, double rails etc. We made it ourselves and paid someone a couple of hundred pounds to cut and apply the trim so it's fully busily in

threeisacharm18 · 27/01/2024 16:31

I got quoted 1,500 for a fitted 5 meter wardrobe in London. I'd be looking on Facebook, Nextdoor for a good carpenter if I was you. That quote sounds like a rip off

BG2015 · 27/01/2024 16:41

These are IKEA pax wardrobes. We planned it all ourselves. Got a jewellery tray, baskets, loads of hanging space.

Cost about £900 and we got a joiner to box them in.

adhdmeds · 27/01/2024 17:02

We've recently had sharps wardrobes fitted. Two double wardrobes and a bank of shelves with doors like the wardrobes. Cost £6.5k. Expensive but worth every Penny in my opinion. Great craftsmanship and they come with a guarantee.

My sister had similar fitted by a carpenter - the paint work is already chipped and they don't have a guarantee.

However, if you are looking to sell it probably isn't worth the investment. Unless it's in keeping with the house and then may actually add some money to the value of the house.

ScoobyDoesnt · 27/01/2024 17:24

I had my bedroom done last year, and found a local carpenter who made the units himself and fitted them. Two double full height wardrobes, with a run of cupboards above the bed, 2 bedside tables and a run of 9 drawers (3x3), including the bottom ones being extra deep for jumpers, jeans etc (like pan drawers you get in kitchens!) - all supplied and fitted for £2800. Absolutely chuffed with them.

Caveat - I did also have to have the whole room replastered and a new ceiling as the walls were shocking and the ceiling was the most disgusting floral plasterwork you’ve ever seen. That was an extra £1400! But well worth it.

migigo · 27/01/2024 17:26

That's expensive. You can buy the same sorts of cupboards that you design online your self then find a local fitter, mine took a day to fit - so £300 for fitting plus £2200 for the cupboards

Can you recommend who please?

Mirabai · 27/01/2024 22:21

What you need is the IKEA hack whereby a carpenter builds a frame with pediment and base and around some IKEA wardrobes. You can either use the IKEA doors (which can be painted) or he can make some bespoke doors. They don’t have to be boxed in like the example above which are not central, they can be placed centrally within a frame for a more luxe look.

You end up with a built in bespoke look for a fraction of the price.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/01/2024 22:29

Mine cost £2k

CopperLion · 27/01/2024 22:35

I recently had a wall of fitted wardrobes. The quotes by big names including Hammond’s came in much higher than a local carpenter who did a beautiful job for £3K (not painted). I’m in SE England.
