Full splashbacks or upstands and painted walls

Need to decide if I want my new kitchen quartz worktops to have 10cm upstands and splash back only over the sink with painted walls or have all (2) walls with splash backs. Not that much wall to be painted as have lots of floor to ceiling units and a peninsula.
Thinking that the painted walls would add some interest and contrasting colour (maybe sage green) to my dove grey units and white marble effect quartz.

I have that exact colour scheme and no splash backs other than sink and hob which are the same as worktop quartz. It's lovely

Ihateslugs · 23/01/2024 22:31

My new kitchen was finished just last week. I have pale shiny handleless units with a mid grey sparkly quartz worktop. I opted for matching quartz splash backs all around where the work top meets the walls which are painted in mellow sage green, apart from the wall behind the seating area where there is an awkward height level. Behind the hob which has a fan over it, I have a large matching piece of quartz completely filing the gap. I have a mottled dark grey Karndean floor as a contrast to the lighter grey worktops.

I am in love with my kitchen, it has turned out better than I expected and there is nothing I would change. The fitter added some small tweaks as he went along which completed the overall effect beautifully. I think the splash backs give the room a sleek, finished look

I going to take some photos tomorrow now that I have “ dressed” the room properly, I’ve only got ones from before it was decorated. The floor looks darker than in the photo.

That has given me the confidence to go ahead with painted walls. What colour paint did you choose and what make was your quartz please.

Your kitchen looks beautiful. I wanted gloss units with a sparkly quartz top but hubby didn’t!!! Having Amtico wood effect flooring.

We had a quartz splashback behind the hob and painted walls in our last house and I hated it.
We ended up tiling around the splashback which looked ridiculous so for our current reno we are just having upstands and herringbone tiles.

Why did you hate it? Was it too much work keeping it clean?

Here’s a photo - gosh I hated it so much 😂

@LindaDawn because my husband is the cook in our house however he is very messy! There was constantly cooking specks on the wall hence why we tiled it

I may be biased as a KD, but I really love the cohesive look of a worktop running up into a full backsplash. I don’t like the castellated style so much - I mean when the whole back wall under wall cabinets has a matching backsplash. Love it

Quartz is Indian white with grey seams like marble. Got from a local marble dealer.

Get some pink stuff paste to clean it with because it brings it back to white because it does slightly mark with tea and coffee etc.

Colour was valspar mix but it's very very subtle sage green. You'll need to get tester pots to see what colours are ok in your room. F&b cromaty is a lovely shade but was too dark.

Our painted walls are filthy.
Big mistake.

SnowsFalling · 24/01/2024 07:11

How much cooking do you do?
This house has painted walls. They are awful to keep clean.
But we are a house that cooks (nearly) every night, and make our own cake, biscuits and quite a lot of bread. I suspect we are above average in terms of kitchen usage.
If I could work out how to tie in the tiles behind the cooker, cupboards, and workspace, I'd be getting it tiled or an acrylic splashback installed.

Plumtop11 · 24/01/2024 07:25

I like the painted walls look. We have that and looks great.

cheezelouize · 24/01/2024 07:33

Last kitchen had quartz upstand and painted walls. We cook a lot and the walls got filthy. Bits of food stuck to them so they looked gritty when washed too. I was regularly repainting. This time I've gone for quartz and tiles. Much easier and cleaner

Dogsandbabies · 24/01/2024 07:49

I went for full quartz and I absolutely love it. Very easy to keep clean.

Painted walls are a nightmare to keep clean. Not practical at all. The paint comes off if you keep scrubbing greasy marks even if you use special kitchen paint.

Hob in in the pensisular so that helps as no wall to splash?

Forgot to say, my decorator recommended a Crown scrubbable paint available to trade only, he reckons it is very hard wearing and does not wear off when washed. We will see!

Mazuslongtoenail · 24/01/2024 12:35

We have no splash backs because it would be one texture too many. We have crown scrubable paint and it wipes down well.

Eventually it will need a touch up, but if you have spare paint it’s a 10 minute job.

MrsLurkalotagain · 24/01/2024 14:49

We have 12cm upstands, and just tiles behind the cooker. We used scrubbable paint. Has lasted 3 years so far and no marks after wiping, which we would have to do with tiles anyway.

Your kitchen looks lovely and the green tiles add a splash of colour and interest.

We have splash backs all the way round our kitchen from under the cupboards to the worktops. They are ten years old and still look as good as the day they were fitted. We matched the glass colour to our wall, not cheap but well worth the low maintenance.

puffylovett1 · 24/01/2024 18:44

Yes that’s exactly what I mean, like the lady above who has uploaded a photo of her quartz cladding :) love the look
