Where to live in Nottingham

Hello! I've scoured the forums and not quite found my answer. We are going to be buying in Nottingham soon and not quite found my perfect area and not sure it exists, budget up to 450k, 4 bed, good sense of community and neighbours that talk to each other is really important to me, as is some green space/nature ideally some hills and views, and have a 2.5yo so good primary school, and ideally secondary. My partner is commuting to Leicester and I'm in the city centre for work. Beeston has been recommended a lot but it feels quite ungreen to me and a bit trafficy.prefer the more alternative feel of Sherwood /mapperley but are there any green pockets? Or any wild cards? Thanks all. Yes I'm chasing perfection but good to aim high??

If you want green you need to either be nearer the river or the northern outskirts I'd say. Everyone I know who lives in Beeston adores it, did you not see Highfields Park?

StrawberryPavlova · 22/01/2024 19:08

Have you looked at Ruddington and Wilford? Rushcliffe Country Park in Ruddington is lovely.

StrawberryPavlova · 22/01/2024 19:10

Attenborough is also nice, there's a huge nature reserve that's lovely to walk around.

testingtesting · 22/01/2024 19:20

Mapperley Park? - would get a 4 bed semi for that price..

LIZS · 22/01/2024 19:20

Agree Ruddington, Gamston, Bingham would all suit. West Bridgeford (a mn favourite) is probably out of budget.

CCLCECSC · 22/01/2024 19:22

Ruddington, Keyworth, Cotgrave all spring to mind. Good for access to both Leicester and City Centre. Can be in countryside in minutes.

Mrsbadger77 · 22/01/2024 19:22

£450k is a bit of stretch for a 4 bed in a decent area

TheFairyCaravan · 22/01/2024 19:26

Radcliffe-On-Trent is lovely

NotMeNoNo · 22/01/2024 21:49

Is the Leicester commute train or car?

Posieralmer1 · 23/01/2024 08:10

It's either really, train preferred but we have a car

Thanks will check it out. What's it like socially? Happy with a village but as long as there's some life and young families, and a bit of a buzz

Posieralmer1 · 23/01/2024 08:13

Mapperley park looks nice, but are there young families there and hows the schools?

OP posts:
Posieralmer1 · 23/01/2024 08:14

I know it sounds really picky but I'd quite like some hills and a view and are these all quite flat? But will check them out, thank you

Thanks, I quite like the look of Bingham. What's it like socially? Are there young families?

I'd look closely at the commute to Leicester. I used to commute by car and it was fairly hideous. The places you want to live for an easy car commute aren't going to be good for the train and vice versa.

Posieralmer1 · 23/01/2024 08:17

Ok thank you that's really helpful

Plenty of young families in Bingham, decent schools, access to green space, nice new leisure centre. There's a station but if you want to get to Leicester you'd have to go into Nottingham first. But good access onto the A46 to get to Leicester by car

testingtesting · 23/01/2024 10:37

Mapperley Park: lots of young families.
Most send kinds to Carrington primary and then to the Free School or Redhill for secondary. Alternatively private options of the High School/ Hollygirt are 10/15 minutes walk away.

Beeston is on the line for London trains that stop at Leicester, he would not even need to come into the city centre. If the destination is near Leicester station that would be more convenient than driving. Hills are all to the north of the city so the wrong side for travelling. Unless you go out into the Vale of Belvoir eg Kinoulton.
Nottingham is a compact city there's no need to have a long commute and you could have school etc on your doorstep and everything happening. If you want a countryside view it's a very short drive away.

This was my thought with the Leicester commute - the fast London trains are around 20 mins Beeston to Leicester twice an hour - slow local trains are 50 mins or so but you're more likely to get a seat peak times.

If Beeston's not appealing - Toton type area is easy commute to Beeston for the train, or onto the M1 for the motorway - used to take me about 40 mins to drive to Leicester and most of that was the traffic jam coming off the motorway at junction 21.

Nature reserve along the back of Toton, plus Attenborough is nearby (also worth a look), lots of family oriented activities going on - only one fucking huge big hill though (I am not a fan of this big hill), plus tram access into the city centre pretty easily.

SquigglePigs · 23/01/2024 14:47

Whilst Beeston itself maybe isn't as green as you were expecting, there are a lot of tree lined streets and lots of play areas/green spaces nearby - Highfields Park, Beeston Marina, Attenborough Nature Reserve, Wollaton Park, Bramcote Park etc. There's also a lot going on there for families etc. Easy access to a train station and the M1 along with the trams.

Alternatively Bramcote and Wollaton are nice. Toton is ok for housing but there's not much else there. Easy access to all the places mentioned above though. You can get a 4-bed for £450k in these areas. Schools are pretty good too.

West Bridgford and Ruddington are nice but more pricy so you might struggle for your budget.

I've lived in Lenton for 20 years. It's a decent area. Close to everything. It is overpriced and to be honest o di t really know my neighbours as it's a very transient community. But now the council
Are clamping down on student houses. There are some big Victorian terraces for sale at good prices.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/01/2024 15:09

I was born and brought up in Leicester, the city senate is far nicer now than Nottingham.

Posieralmer1 · 23/01/2024 16:39

Thank you! Which are the greenest streets in beeston if you know? With a bit of community vibe? I think I'm just used to being able to walk to a playground/park and can't get my head round this driving everywhere lark!
