Where to live in Nottingham

Hello! I've scoured the forums and not quite found my answer. We are going to be buying in Nottingham soon and not quite found my perfect area and not sure it exists, budget up to 450k, 4 bed, good sense of community and neighbours that talk to each other is really important to me, as is some green space/nature ideally some hills and views, and have a 2.5yo so good primary school, and ideally secondary. My partner is commuting to Leicester and I'm in the city centre for work. Beeston has been recommended a lot but it feels quite ungreen to me and a bit trafficy.prefer the more alternative feel of Sherwood /mapperley but are there any green pockets? Or any wild cards? Thanks all. Yes I'm chasing perfection but good to aim high??

People keep saying west Bridgford is out of budget, but parts would be ok. Lady Bay is doable on your budget, surrounded by fields and has the family friendly vibe you're after. Not sure about commuting times to Leicester though.

NotMeNoNo · 23/01/2024 17:41

You should have a look on OpenStreetMap, it shows the green spaces/parks much more clearly. I mean obviously Nottingham like any city has quite a lot of streets but you are rarely more than 15-20 minutes walk from some green space.

I had a look at ladybay and really liked it, it actually felt perfect. But then there was loads of flooding and the group I followed on Facebook people were complaining about soggy gardens and cellars and I thought that's maybe a problem I don't want! Sadly I think we storms and floods are going to become a more common thing. But if I'm wrong about it flooding there please let me know!

Chilwell
Attenborough
Toton
Trowell
Sandiacre (just over the sw boarder into derbyshire)
Risley (just over the sw boarder into derbyshire)
Stanton by Dale

All easy access to the M1 and J22 for Leicester. Lovely green slightly more upmarket areas. Particularly the last 3.

Long Eaton - excellent choice for train commute to Leicester.
Sawley
Stapleford (I live here, it's nice and the people are nice and there is a lovely community, good schools too)
Bramcote

The fields by the river do flood, but they are designed to as flood plains. There has been quite a lots of flood prevention work and so flooding from the river Trent is much less likely than the smaller tributaries in the surrounding areas. I think some cellars have flooded this year but it seems a bit random, my parents cellar has never flooded in 40 years, but 4 doors away has done quite a few times!
I bet the soggy gardens were the ones that back on to the canal!

Mum2jenny · 23/01/2024 21:41

I’m in Nottingham by the canal and it’s never flooded as long as I’ve been here, not even got a bit risky. However I was paranoid when we first moved in in case it did flood.
it really depends on what exactly you want/ need OP where to buy.

Thank you! Which are the greenest streets in beeston if you know? With a bit of community vibe? I think I'm just used to being able to walk to a playground/park and can't get my head round this driving everywhere lark!

You want to look at the area between Beeston Fields golf course down to Chilwell Road, quite a few tree lined streets, lots of lovely period properties. I love living in Beeston, there is so much going on, lots of great restaurants, pubs etc, walking distance to Highfields, Beeston marina, Attenborough nature reserve, Wollaton Park. Trams and train are also super convenient. Direct line to Leicester, Birmingham and London.

I’d look at the Compton acres area of West Bridgford. You can get the tram from there to the station and then train to Nottingham.

I grew up in Beeston.
I'd say the areas between Bramcote Drive, Wollaton Road, Chilwell Road and Cator Lane are leafy and should be in budget. I especially like the Bramcote Road, Devonshire Avenue area.

There's loads going on and you are close to so much with good transport links.

If I ever moved back it would be to Beeston, Sherwood or Mapperly Park.

Ruddington, West Bridgford, gamston, keyworth and Edwalton are the southside of Nottingham so really easy drive to Leicester via A606 and A46, maybe 30 mins depending where in Leicester. Th
Ruddington has a real community feel, loads of green space, great schools, loads of independent shops and cafés snd bars and you can get a 4 bed for 450k. All the places I have mentioned are in Rushcliffe borough, which also has really good GP and health facilities.

One thing about Nottingham and trains....check the prices to Leicester as for some reason trains involving Nottingham are mega expensive.

Waves from Long Eaton (and previously Stapleford)

I'd not suggested Stapleford as MN tends to get a bit pearl clutchy about it - but lived there for a good 15+ years and never had a single bit of bother, huge community feeling in the street I was in and it did us well - we only moved out of there as we couldn't get a house we liked there for the right price when we were up-sizing (4 beds seem to be slim on the ground over that side of the A52 and we were quite limited on search area because I needed to be near certain transport links for my work).

I just found this website which shows you property prices on a map. It might help with your research.

Thanks, I quite like the look of Bingham. What's it like socially? Are there young families?

I know of a 4 bed detached for sale in Bingham. Lovely small town, great schools. Easy commute. Cheap houses. I can recommend it.

We moved to Stapleford in 1971 when I was 7 and stayed for 14 years.
Dad had his business there.
Fairfield and George Spencer were great schools and I believe still are.
I have really fond memories of our time there and the friends I made.

FruitcakeandCheeses · 25/01/2024 01:16

Ayeup @CoffeeWithCheese I also live in LE. At least Stapleford still has a Rowells :)
