6 MONTHS RENT UPFRONT

TEEUVEE · 15/01/2024 14:44

I am a single mother who gave birth a few months ago. I am currently on maternity leave and homeless, hopping from house to house. I tried to rent a small house for my baby and myself but all landlords insist that because of my situation I will have to pay 6 months in advance as I am not in receipt of benefits at the moment. My dad said he is willing to lend me the money but he will need it back. I plan on applying for universal credit and getting help with housing (LHA) once I move into a place. My question is, would the 6 months of rent that were paid in advance be given to me so I can give my dad his money back. If not what other help would I be entitled to from the government.

You'd be best off talking to shelter, they will have advice you can trust to be legally correct.

Apply for uc now?

Is paying 6m upfront rent the only option? When we were asked to pay upfront we could have avoided it if there was someone we could name as a guarantor (and then we could just pay monthly).

Notanevillandlord · 15/01/2024 14:58

Could your dad act as a guarantor instead?

Hello everyone

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

We always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

OP, we've compiled some useful links posted by Mumsnetters into a financial issues webguide, so that people experiencing difficulties can find all the relevant information in one place - we hope that it's useful for you.

Hi @TEEUVEE I would post on the Money Matters forum rather than Property as there are more people on that forum with experience of UC.

Hope you get answers.

@KCSIE @Notanevillandlord I don't know why but apparently that is not sufficient to any of them. My dad earns up to 70k yearly, but they still claim that is not enough and I have to pay 6 months in advance.
