Bath or large shower?

twobluechickens · 30/12/2023 16:05

Interested in opinions/experiences. My bathroom needs redoing and I’m wondering whether I should swap the bath for a large walk-in shower. I can count on one hand the number of baths I’ve had in the past five years; I would always choose a shower. I don’t have kids and live alone.

Having a large shower instead of a bath would mean I could potentially add a separate small toilet, which would be useful for guests. My house isn’t likely to appeal to young families so I can’t see it having much impact on resale value.

I love baths and could never consider getting rid of one. But, if you're not planning on moving, and it suits you, go for the shower. It's your house.

dlago · 30/12/2023 16:15

We did just that. Got rid of bath and added a large walk in shower.

We don't anticipate moving and don't think keeping the bath to appeal to future potential buyers is reasonable.

CrochetMadRosie · 30/12/2023 16:20

We've just had our bathrooms done and got rid of our bath for a big shower.
We LOVE it! It feels so luxurious.
Our house would definitely appeal to families with young children, but we have no plans to move any time soon so decided to just do what was right for us and don't regret it at all.

Dox9 · 30/12/2023 16:22

Large shower. We took out the bath and put a large shower in 10 years ago. We have no plans to sell and have never regretted getting rid of the bath.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/12/2023 16:23

They always say, not having bath will put off potential buyers. Everyone I have spoken to redoing their bathrooms, have been replacing baths with large showers.

We have a bath with shower over. I last had a bath....... I don't know when.

We did our bathroom a couple of years ago and should have killed the bath for a large shower.

Soontobe60 · 30/12/2023 16:25

We had the bath taken out of what is a tiny bathroom. DH never had a bath, and we didn’t want a shower over bath combo. I don’t regret it but will occasionally sneak off to my DDs house for a soak in her big bath 😂
I also try to book hotels with a bath when we go away. I’ve got very weak wrists now so DH has to help me get out 😂😂😂

If you live alone and are not planning to move, then the obvious thing to do, is to do what you would prefer to use.
Not really even a question.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a house without a bath, or a large reduction making it worth while the cost and hassle of having to re-do the bathroom, but I wouldn't re-do a room in my house to suit other people that aren't living there.

Sera1989 · 30/12/2023 16:28

Unless you find the bath useful for anything else (washing a dog, soaking things for cleaning etc.) then I'd go with a large shower. I've always thought I'd keep the bath when I redo the bathroom but I also rarely use it and showering in a bath is starting to feel a bit claustrophobic. One of my friends bathed her baby in a flexi trug so I'd probably just do the same when the time comes (if I ever get round to redoing the bathroom)

Definitely. Been in my house 20 years, redid the bathroom 14 years ago and got rid of the bath. Not missed it since. My house suits me.

Ineedanewsofa · 30/12/2023 16:40

We’ve recently done ours and put in a walk in shower and a small, high sided tub - wouldn’t suit everyone but really works for us as we are only occasional bath users. It’ll probably be rubbish when we are older and can’t climb in and out!

ibelieveinmirrorballs · 30/12/2023 16:47

I had this dilemma with a small en-suite but ended up choosing this amazing straight sided stone resin bath with a shower over, which meant that both having a bath and shower felt spacious with neither compromised. I’m also much more a shower person but sometimes only a bath will do!

Ethos Freestanding Stone Bath 1800mm

There are few stone baths as simplistically chic as the Ethos. Exuding straightforward energy through the clean, structural lines, this deceptively decadent stone bath is perfect for minimalist interiors. The seamless style of the Ethos elevates even c...

It’s a nice bath, but I’d assume a shower bath combo is what the OP currently has.

I had been planning my bathroom for a while. Bath out, large flat walk in shower IN. Easy enough to replace with a bath over shower if next owner wanted to.

BUT in my dreams/plans had not considered the bloody concrete floor!! I could have a large shower & no bath, BUT it would have had to be a high step up & I think that looks ugly, & it's not a high ceiling, so I went for shower over bath.

i love my bathroom, BUT I hate having the shower over the bath 😫

@twobluechickens I'd do what you want!!

personally I'd leave the walks where they are so it's easy enough to replace with a bath/shower if necessary at any time.

twobluechickens · 30/12/2023 18:42

Yes, currently have P-shaped bath with shower over. I'm not a fan to be honest - damn thing leaks like mad although that's because it's been installed really badly. If I did put another bath in, it would be straight sided. I need to do some scale drawings to see if a separate loo is possible - if not, I will probably keep a bath but otherwise a large shower.

Choose what you want for yourself! It’s your house and you r are living there! We removed our bath and separate small shower to put in a large walk in shower and ours in a family home but don’t care two hoots if it affects the sale of my house! Have another shower in en-suite. Drives me nuts 2hen people go on about it affecting resale value. Last bath I had was when I gave birth to my last child 34 years ago!!

Justperfectthanks · 30/12/2023 23:11

Been living with my large walkin shower for 3 years and I have zero regrets!

LumiB · 30/12/2023 23:19

Do it. I'm planning to do the same and my house is a family house however there will be people who will buy so no point worrying about resale value. Besides by the time you decide to sell if you do, most likely its got old and new buyers will rip it out anyway.

My parents neighbours ripped out a perfectly newish kitchen and bathroom just cos they didn't like the style. Talking only 3 yrs old.

Some people will redo rooms regardless.

Enjoy your walk in shower!

BrimfulOfMash · 31/12/2023 05:07

Go for the shower!

I have never once had a bath in my house, and have only ever used it once, to wash a big rug in.

user1492757084 · 31/12/2023 05:30

Go for the shower in your case.
You can buy useful blow up baths for the odd time you wish to soak a doona or bath a child.

SutWytTi · 31/12/2023 05:36

I'd go for what you want but ensure you design the bathroom so it is easy to swap out the shower for a bath with shower over.

People will buy a house with the bathroom not quite what they'd choose as they can budget to change it, but it puts people off if reconfiguring would be very expensive.

So don't put the shower in a stupid place that would require replumbing for a bath.

GreatGateauxsby · 31/12/2023 05:44

I think it depends on your property type and future plans.

If you are there forever do what you like.

Fwiw I find bathroom design the absolute hardest part of a house and invariably do an inspired or visually slightly jarring job.

Is there any.chance you'd share a picture of your installed one. That looks amazing. Is it comfy as a bath too???

somewhereovertherain · 31/12/2023 13:03

We’ve just taken the bath out of the family bathroom as have one in our en-suite and we will keep that when we redo it later in the year.

It’s super comfy as it has a shaped section where you lay your head - and although it’s the same footprint as a normal bath, is massive and feels very decadent! Will share a pic although may delete shortly as feel weird about sharing pic!

twobluechickens · 31/12/2023 17:48

Nice! What have you used on the walls?

Definitely a walk in shower, we put a new bathroom in 6 years ago with a roll top bath. It still looks gorgeous but I can't get in or out of it in my own 🙈. It'll be a walk in shower next time for sure, please don't make the same mistake.
