Easiest/cheapest way to hide these pipes? (photo)

Downstairs loo. Don’t care about the horizontal pipe (didn’t have the money or the room to box it in), but I would like to hide the ones under the sink.

Any ideas please?

Excuse the dirt and mess, still decorating after the build!

Also ignore the rude comments. A downstairs toilet is always a plus and all rooms look a bit shit mid-renovation before they’re decorated.

TizerorFizz · 29/12/2023 08:26

How do you decorate out a horizontal waste pipe?

Nitgel · 29/12/2023 08:29

Put a plant there 😄

Look, I promise you, if I ever sell my house, I won’t force you to buy it.

I cannot list all the ways I don’t give a shit about the position of a waste pipe in a bonus loo at the end of the utility room that was almost just a storage cupboard or space for a second freezer anyway.

We spent the money on the really important things like old flat roofs, replacing floors and ceilings, insulation, new plasterwork etc.

It’s an old house. I’m sure you’d be just as horrified if you saw the other odd bit of exposed pipe work on some walls this house has, just like hundreds of other similar houses in the area have too. It’s certainly not out of the norm and anyone buying a house here will have seen the same countless times or far worse, believe me. That loo is an added extra downstairs, its no frills but it will be decorated just fine over the next month.

Easiest and cheapest way would be to paint them or attach a couple of battens vertically and screw a piece of ply to them to cover over them. If you don't have the woodwork skills and tools painting would be by far the easiest thing to do.

A couple of exposed pipes won't devalue your house.

A few houses back, we had floor to ceiling pipes in a corner and no money. We used a curved plastic gutter, primed and painted the same colour as the wall with filling around the gaps. It worked.
Or a pedestal would work.

Is that horizontal pipe level? I would really try and do something with that, either have it lowered to skirting board level or have a narrow shelf over the top of it, with soaps, hand creams, etc, which will make it less intrusive.

Devilsmommy · 29/12/2023 08:45

A pedestal would be perfect. I've got a very small sink in a narrow space and the pedestal hides the pipes perfectly

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 29/12/2023 08:55

Does your builder/tiler know DH is painting, did they speak about it?

Please tell him not to paint where the tiles are going, you'll likely have an unhappy tiler and the tiles my well not stick properly!

Nitgel · 29/12/2023 09:09

i think my idea is best with a plant, you can also get one that trails along creating a lovely plant area. Also who really cares about pipes in the bathroom showing. Also a plant will help with the atmosphere and also look so pretty.

Yes, they said not to paint there, just mist coat cans then paint around the tiles when they are up.

I couldn’t find a pedestal stink (in budget anyway) that would fit that space.

That photo makes it look bigger than it is. I would have liked a proper sink, not a corner one but the wall was too narrow one side and not enough space the other side either, you wouldn’t have been able to get through the door so it’s the smallest corner sink I could find.

There wasn’t a sink in the original horrible
old loo that was there! We had it all knocked out as it was all rotten, but had to build it back the same size as there just wasn’t room with other doors, utility area etc to make it any bigger. And it was just the brick of the house before, we had it insulated and plaster boarded which made it smaller.

We did the best with what we had.

Your best bet is to box it off then my DH said, ex builder. Hate tiny sinks!

I would have saved up some more money. This devalues the house. Sorry.

It doesn't devalue the house.

Your posts are unnecessary.

Oh me too - but it was a tiny sink or no sink! Lots of back and forth, every one said a down stairs loo and sink would be better than not having one. But we couldn’t make the space any bigger!

Make a skirt for it with some fabric you love as a stop gap until you get the funds together to do what you really like. Or paint the pipes the same colour as the wall and put a towel rail under the unit and use the towel like a skirt.

Rina66 · 29/12/2023 09:37

I think using the rounded guttering is a fantastic idea @Giggorata

Isn't there a plinth for the sink that would hide the down pipes? Why is the horizontal waste pipe so high, does it exit the house that high? I assume you can't drop it down closer to skirting board height and box it in. Put a narrow shelf over the horizontal pipe to obscure it and give a bit of storage?

The waste pipe goes a long way before it exits the house and yes, it’s high up as the house has a big drop off at the rear.

There was no plinth for that sink.

A narrow shelf you’d bash your knees into on the loo! That photo makes the room look weirdly bigger than it is!

I think I'd just get a bit of MDF cut to measure with a gap for the horizontal pipe and slide it underneath. There is a company that will do it for you online somewhere think. Or just paint the pipes whatever colour you are doing the wall-or a contrasting colour to match the skirting boards...

PhillMichellsbrother · 29/12/2023 09:57

The rest of the pipes are hidden by utility cabinets. They are only on show in that tiny toilet room.

Mespher · 29/12/2023 09:58

Our sink is tiny too, 35 x 24cm, not a corner one but since we only use it to wash our hands after using the loo, it's fine, it's not like you are going to have a full wash in there. We tiled behind ours and stuck a small soap dispenser to the tiles, there was nowhere else to put the soap

Torganer · 29/12/2023 10:02

I would just get some chipboard and box it out. It will be cheap and easy.

caringcarer · 29/12/2023 11:02

Just get them boxed in first and then put a curved stainless steel unit under to hold some toilet cleaner and spare loo rolls.
