What colour is your lounge?

I bought my house six years ago, a total renovation project top to bottom and painted everywhere grey. It was on trend! Now I want to freshen up the lounge. I can't afford new furniture but am going to do a paint job, new artwork, get the carpet professionally cleaned, get rid of the curtains and install shutters.

So, what paint colours are the "go to" for lounges now? Carpet is, yep, grey!

My latest decorated rooms are dark green and dark blue. I'm currently mood boarding my greige and aubergine living room and fancying a moss green sofa with an orange chair and some kind of pale neutral on the walls next. I normally love bold wallpaper but I might try understated paint and use furnishings for colour next time.

BTW, I don't care if my house is trendy or not if I like the colours. I painted my first wall grey back in 2012 when it was just becoming a thing, and I still think it looks good now even if i'm a bit bored of it. White everything makes me think of offices, but lots of people like that even though I wouldn't be able to live with it for any length of time. As long as it's done with care and thought through, any colour scheme can look great.

Borrowed light F and B paint, brown sofas (hate them but can't afford to change ) with blue cushions
I want a new carpet and now want the coffee table / bench posted above. In fact that whole room is fabulous

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/12/2023 20:13

I agree with you @TodayForTomorrow. My living room and bedroom are both grey but I can change the curtains if I get bored. I don't like dark colours (my rooms are too small) or white, so grey suits me.

Devilsmommy · 23/12/2023 20:14

Grey, ochre and teal. It's really cosy with the ochre and teal warming up the grey

Sirprised · 23/12/2023 20:20

Farrow and ball vert de terre. It's a lovely light green with blue undertones. We have a dark blue sofa, a pale blue loveseat and a large Persian rug on the floor. The colours look amazing together - particularly the walls and light blue velvet seat against the deep, rich red of the rug. It feels so cosy in here now.

I have the dreaded grey! Silver grey carpet, dark grey sofa and chairs. Light coloured walls. Terracotta fireplace and terracotta orange cushions .

alloutofcareunits · 23/12/2023 23:23

Ivory walls with blood orange chimney breast, it looks lovely with my black cast iron fireplace and very dark purple sofas. The other room is buttermilk with red alcoves. I've also had grey walls with aubergine alcoves. I like colour.

Farrow and Ball India Yellow. I love it! Our other living room is a Dulux Emerald green which I also love.

Do all you folk with white houses have decorators Pure Brilliant White or something more muted? The rest of my house is F&B School House White which I really like. I imagine PBW would be really stark and cold.

I used to have a white 1970s house, and it was F and B Pointing throughout (hint of red/pink), and really worked for square, regular rooms and lots of light from all sides. Now I have a big, battered Victorian house with 13 foot ceilings, and if I painted it white throughout, it would look somewhere between a TB asylum from 1890 and an art gallery, so it’s painted in very strong colours. I have Inchyra Blue, Bancha, a deep gold, a sage green, a deep browny-pink.

SkankingWombat · 23/12/2023 23:50

You are going from grey (last trend) to green (current trend) so it will just date again in a few years.

Yay, does that mean fashion has caught up with me and I'm now On Trend? 😂 (I suppose it's got to happen at some point through the law of averages!)
My whole house is a variety of shades of either blue or green. I was never keen on all the grey - life needs a bit of colour.

TheCatfordCat · 23/12/2023 23:53

Dark blue, Yellow and off-white. It sounds weird but I like it. I hate neutrals, I prefer colour.

Navy wallpaper that has a wild gold floral print over it. Love it because it picks out the light and reflects it around. We have a bright pink sofa and white woodwork. Chosen because I LOVE navy and pink and it makes me smile every time I look at it!

Also considered mustard and teal sofas. The entire house was grey when we bought it- carpets, woodwork, ceilings…. I even had a thread on hear about it. We’ve done three rooms so far- the lounge, our bedroom is burgundy (all 4 walls), white and good leaf print wallpaper in 2nd bedroom. All woodwork is now white and carpets are very pale cream. It makes the house SO much lighter and we have gone for colours we love not trends as it was hard enough work getting these rooms done, I really don’t want to go again!

AnotherAdventFridge · 24/12/2023 00:12

Another olivish green here. We have two walls of book shelves so could probably get away with any old colour.

Stressybetty · 24/12/2023 00:17

We have Emma Shipley gold zambezi on one wall, the rest white, grey painted cupboards in alcoves and dark olive green velvet curtains. We matched the white from the wallpaper background.

LittleMissSunshiner · 24/12/2023 00:21

Pure brilliant white all the way thru my flat as it's a newbuild and I use whatever colour curtains / rugs, lights, accessories, etc to create the feel I want, which is mostly quite bright and light colours. To make it snug at night I turn the lights low.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 24/12/2023 00:27

I just redecorated in May going from a horrendous beige to green. It's called Tea party from valspar and it's in between a mint and a safe green. It's bright enough for our NE facing room without being yellow. I love green, it was a theme colour at my wedding 12 years ago.

Gottoloveatakeaway · 24/12/2023 18:39

Dukux quintessential blue. Absolutely love it. Thinking of moving and will probably still go same colour in new place.

Echobelly · 24/12/2023 18:47

Dulux Natural Hessian - we're generally 'colours' people for decoration but the lounge is big and open plan, Natural Hessian is my go-to neutral (I had it in the bigger spaces in my first two places) as it's warm without being yellowy and looks nice with white woodwork. We have colourful lights, chairs and rugs against that.

Vicliz24 · 24/12/2023 18:48

Little Greene green blue a gorgeous rich turquoise.

Gazelda · 24/12/2023 19:23

Royal blue and mauve. With wood furniture, fireplace and floors.

It's a small, cosy room in a Victorian cottage.

We've got olive green and white in our bathroom.

CuteOrangeElephant · 24/12/2023 19:29

Farrow and ball Inchyra blue with the window frames also painted that colour.

Noseyoldcow · 24/12/2023 19:54

We have a 1970s house. The lounge/diner is L shaped, and we have large windows on 3 sides. Painted it brilliant white years ago as couldn't decide on a colour because the light coming in from the windows makes it all different colours anyway, plus the furnishings kind of reflect light and change the colour too. Doesn't look cold at all. A bit old fashioned mind, but then I am too.....

TheLurpackYears · 24/12/2023 19:54

Dulux Wicker in one room, I'm pretty meh about it but it tones in well with the wallpaper in the other room. Then Dulux Olive Grove on a few pieces of furniture to bring it together.

tryingforbaba · 24/12/2023 20:05

Cream, beige, grey (neutral)

MumUndone · 24/12/2023 20:08

Ours is a browny greyish purpley colour from Wickes that I think is called Mink but seems to be discontinued. The closest I can find is Dulux Heartwood but it's not as pink as that one. I love it, very warm and cosy.
