What colour is your lounge?

I bought my house six years ago, a total renovation project top to bottom and painted everywhere grey. It was on trend! Now I want to freshen up the lounge. I can't afford new furniture but am going to do a paint job, new artwork, get the carpet professionally cleaned, get rid of the curtains and install shutters.

So, what paint colours are the "go to" for lounges now? Carpet is, yep, grey!

Have whatever colour you want

Seaside3 · 23/12/2023 16:33

Currently railings and white tie from farrow and ball, but considering a dark brown or a muted terracotta.

Current below.

Ours is dark brown and cream with some teal furnishings, which I love (even though it wasn’t fashionable when we chose it), but we have light wood parquet flooring and I’m not sure it would go with grey.

pecanpie101 · 23/12/2023 16:42

I have dark green and off white

namechangedforthisone35 · 23/12/2023 16:52

@Seaside3 love that!

I'm thinking along the lines of dark green for the chimney breast (tv hangs here too) and then an olive/beigey for other walls?

Our carpet is neutral but we've got very patterned sofas (Ikat velvet in navy and duck egg) so our walls are a soft clay colour with ceiling to match, and a deeper feature wall in a Zoffany colour called Double La Seine - it's hard to describe but it's a grey/green/blue. Very relaxing and easy to live with.

Contemplating a large rug for the new year and new curtains though.

SkankingWombat · 23/12/2023 17:09

We have dark green similar to the chimney breast picture (although ours is on all walls) with oak herringbone parquet and white woodwork & curtains. Sofas are a dark grey with bright green and burnt orange cushions. We've had it nearly 3 years now and I still love it. We don't spend much time in there during daylight hours, but at night it feels really cosy and relaxing.

I love this green - my living room an olive-y green - but I think it would look much better if you did the whole room up to the picture rail rather than just the chimney brest

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/12/2023 18:08

Mine is grey (I know it's not fashionable any more but I like it, especially the wallpaper!) with teal curtains. I've got oak furniture and herringbone flooring which I wasn't sure about to start with but it all looks fine

Daisies12 · 23/12/2023 18:11

Case in point, don’t follow trends 😂 chose what you like. Ours is entirely white.

housethatbuiltme · 23/12/2023 18:18

I think its best to pick your favorite color rather than chase a trend.

You are going from grey (last trend) to green (current trend) so it will just date again in a few years.

My house is mocha and light blue... my favorite colors and I have had these colors for the last 16 years and still have no urge to change them. I will be painting my new house mocha again (and wouldn't be surprised if light blue sneaks back in again for a 3rd house).

thedukeofbuckinghamshire · 23/12/2023 18:19

Following this as we are currently undecided and painting commences in Jan!

It's a late Victorian house with fireplaces and cornices, picture rail. We are thinking F&B setting plaster at the moment...

MissyB1 · 23/12/2023 18:23

One wall papered in a sort of stone colour pattern, and the other walls a very neutral magnolia.

The chimney wall is chocolate brown and the other walls a lighter coffee. Beige settees and various reddish cushions. Love our living room, very cosy!

Exactly. You followed a trend last time, OP, and six years on, you think it looks dated. This time don’t follow whatever the current paint colour trend. Just choose a colour you like, and that works with what is staying in the room (carpet, curtains, furniture) and the aspect of the room, what light it gets etc.

Redlarge · 23/12/2023 18:31

White, burgundy and brown

Caspianberg · 23/12/2023 18:48

White. Whole house in white on walls, I still love it 6 years on

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 23/12/2023 18:50

White in every room.

Crooklodge · 23/12/2023 18:55

We have johnstones dry denim, looks much darker in here though.

Seaside3 · 23/12/2023 19:33

Thanks @namechangedforthisone35 . I love green, have it un my kitchen. I don't followvtrends, but go with the colours that work with our house. Thus is a victirian one, so I try to colour and style reference then. So, dark rich colours, patterns that refer to victoriana, (botanical, travel etc). I. Our last house, a 60s one, we had mid century colours and furniture.

I live this green, (swipe through to see it in action) it would blend your tv into the wall, which I love about dark colours. I'd probably go for 1 colour rather than 2 though.

Farrow and Ball India Yellow. I love it! Our other living room is a Dulux Emerald green which I also love.

Do all you folk with white houses have decorators Pure Brilliant White or something more muted? The rest of my house is F&B School House White which I really like. I imagine PBW would be really stark and cold.

I have a lot of jasmine white on my walls which is a lot softer than pbw. My skirting boards in those rooms are a very pale beige. I've only seen pbw work in a modern space with clever lighting other wise it's a bit too much.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 23/12/2023 19:56

grey red and black

Payakan · 23/12/2023 20:00

White and blue, Hampton style. Which works for us since we live in a beach house, but would be odd inland.
