I’m not sure how much it’ll cost if I pay someone to have a look.. I know I need to pressurise it and add water but I’m not sure how to do it. I have a combi boiler

Hi

You need to increase the pressure. Underneath your boiler you should have pipes with valves behind a door/cupboard. You need to turn the valves one horizontally and the other vertically. You will see the dial move up. Stop when it gets to the top of the black curve. Have a look on You tube. I have done it many times.

azafata2 · 14/12/2023 16:25

Not the black curve but raise the pressure to 2.

Finteq · 14/12/2023 16:25

There are videos on YouTube that tell you how to do this.

It is a 1 minute job.

Type in brand name of boiler and repressurise boiler

SoupDragon · 14/12/2023 16:25

Yes, google the make and model of your boiler and you should find instructions on how to do it (and also what level you're meant to do it to!)

Knittedfairies2 · 14/12/2023 16:26

Yes: I was going to suggest YouTube as well. I had to re-pressurise the boiler last week and found out how to do it via YouTube.

CallmeSand · 14/12/2023 16:27

I have had to do this and yes there was a You Tube video. It's really not difficult.

Maybe for your boiler, but for ours there is a 'key' to insert to open the valve

Harrysmummy246 · 14/12/2023 16:28

And you may well need to bleed radiators to release air then top up further as well

SarahShorty · 14/12/2023 16:29

There should be a filling loop either above or below the boiler. Open it slowly and listen for water. It fills up very quickly if you open it all the way and you'll need to bleed a radiator to release the excess water, so open it only a tiny bit and go slow. Once you've got the pressure correct, check all your radiator valves just in case. Boilers don't normally lose all pressure like this unless there is a leak somewhere in the system. Good luck and report back.

azafata2 · 14/12/2023 16:29

Yes. I think my boiler is ancient!

SarahShorty · 14/12/2023 16:33

azafata2 · 14/12/2023 16:25

Not the black curve but raise the pressure to 2.

Should be no more than 1.5 bar when cold. The pressure increases when the boiler is in operation, so putting it to 2 bar is asking for trouble.

I’ve tried checking YouTube but I can’t see the correct pipe or find the key ):

@SarahShorty Hi I added pics of underneath the sink and above but I can’t seem to find the right pipe for some reason

SarahShorty · 14/12/2023 16:41

@wavyerly I see no filling loop under the boiler, so it must be above the boiler. Can you get at the top of the boiler?

azafata2 · 14/12/2023 16:43

Is there a part you can open. Mine looks like a cupboard underneath but it is old.

wavyerly · 14/12/2023 16:43

This is the top of boiler

PP are right you need to repressurise by opening the valves - you also need to work out why it's dropped. It's usually a leak, so you need to check that out too.

I would definitely try to get a plumber or heating engineer out, I know it's a bad time for it.

wavyerly · 14/12/2023 16:48

@SarahShorty im not sure if that’s what you meant by top of boiler xx

So I just did some Googling and found that that boiler doesn't have the sort of filling loop I was thinking of. I then also found a video:

One of the pipes underneath the boiler is the filling loop.

Greenstar filling loop

SarahShorty · 14/12/2023 16:51

@wavyerly that is what I meant, yes. You're alright. I've never seen this sort of thing before. Refer to the video I linked. I hope it's helpful to you.

SarahShorty · 14/12/2023 16:58

If in doubt, call a plumber or heating engineer out as PP suggested. It's not ideal, but then having no heating or hot water isn't ideal either. I'm sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Yep,this is what our boiler is like. The 'key' is a large white plastic handle, usually clipped on somewhere

BoilingHotand50something · 14/12/2023 19:35

If you get stuck, I recently had British Gas out same day. I booked online and they arrived within a couple of hours. Despite it being a weekend, the cost was very reasonable.

TheSmallAssassin · 14/12/2023 19:55

Our Greenstar boiler has a blue valve, but can't see anything on yours the same, so I don't know how helpful it is.

The Worcester people have always been helpful on the phone, so maybe give them a ring - your boiler is still probably under guarantee, so if it's properly broken get them into fix it instead of paying anyone else!
