Would you buy this house?

I am not a stylist person by any means, we are house hunting and I love this house. The location is perfect for us . DH would prefer a project and somewhere with more character. I love the fact we can just move in and it's chain free.

What do you think?This house

No it would be awful to heat in winter.

AllAroundMyCat · 27/11/2023 18:10

For that amount of money I'd want a really big garden, wraparound too and I'd not want to be overlooked.

whatwasIgoingtosay · 27/11/2023 17:18

I've just been reading a post where the OP doesn't have room for a dining table in her council flat and now this post about which £1.5 million house to choose to buy. MN is a broad church, isn't it? I am with your husband, and any of the other suggestions posted. The newbuild you have shown us is really very bland, although you could impose your own style on it I suppose.

Room for the table in one of those though!

Small, pokey, dated, much less comfortable. White can be fixed quite inexpensively, small costs a shit ton of money to fix.

Lol not as much as heating a soulless empty box with windows everywhere.

Its not even practical usable space... it would need a fortune to make that more than a waiting room.

The other house is not far off the same size it just has furniture in it (thats not CGI) and it functions way better.

If people didn't want rooms they would live in fields lol.

I can’t get my head around people who don’t have the imagination to see what can be done with a blank canvas.

The other house is much smaller - narrower with small pokey rooms needing a large extension on the back and complete reconfiguration of the ground floor to make it comfortable, with a weird garage stuck in the front garden.

Not sure why people are so preoccupied with heating it either - if they can afford the house they can afford the heating.

GoodnightJude1 · 27/11/2023 20:18

It’s nice….but to me it’s not 1.6 mil worth of nice.

It’ll be your home though OP, not mine, so if you love it (and can convince your DH) then go for it!

In my case, I prefer multiple smaller rooms and I wouldn’t be extending or changing the layout of the second house. I also much prefer the layout of the garden.

The only way I’d buy the first house is if I could divide the huge room at the back into separate rooms.

Yes, it’s a ‘blank canvas’ but one that would require significant building work before I could live with it.

I don’t think I’m lacking in imagination because I hate the garden and hate the layout of the first house. Those things aren’t easily changeable.

Diyextension · 27/11/2023 20:28

The second one would have next to no insulation, the first one would be a lot easier to heat due to the current building regs 🙂. White just looks colder

If you want a seaview for less than half a million what about this
4 bedroom bungalow for sale in South Headlands Crescent, Newtonhill, AB39 (rightmove.co.uk)

That location in Newtonhill has howling gales off the sea for much of the year.

I’d also like to know why it needs a full suite of security cameras!

readsalotgirl63 · 27/11/2023 20:36

It's not mine but I live nearby - there is often wind but I wouldn't say it's always howling gales. Hadn't noticed the cameras - maybe just security conscious ?

You would get a good view of the sea as the house is disappearing down into it in a few years ,the ones further up look like they have less than that.

I don’t like small cramped poky houses, if you do that’s up to you. Building work to make large spacious rooms into small cramped ones is batty.

The garden is very easy to change.

Posters seem to be used to small houses and find the scale of the first overwhelming - the windows, the heating etc - it’s not even that big!

Bearing in mind in London 1.6 buys a small terraced house.

@Diyextension the cliffs there are solid rock so not likely to go anywhere

Diyextension · 27/11/2023 21:00

The soil/ land on top of them will still be eroded away over time, you can see in the picture the land right at the end of the crag is falling away.

I have imagination... I'm buying a doer up and completely customising it currently.

The fact is theres nothing to 'do up' in the OPs one, its been completely destroyed and raped of ANY character. Thats not fixable.

I can't understand how anyone think the genius idea of 'paint the walls' in an empty box thinks they have an ounce of creativity but cannot comprehend how something with a person living in (thats not a gutted white shell) can be made into a home easily.

I’m not sure how you’d make the garden at least 3 times as big which is what it would need to permit the necessary large trees to prevent it being overlooked.

My issue isn’t that it doesn’t have nice flowerbeds - it’s simply far too small for the size of the house in my opinion.

I like big houses but I like multiple rooms. I have no problem with other people wanting to effectively live in one room but it would drive me mad.

Also, I didn’t say I would convert the first house, I just said that’s the only way I’d be able to live in it. The personal insults really aren’t necessary.

If you're open to a project this one has been for sale for ages, so there's probably a deal to be had and the views are lovely. It's also in a priority postcode for the grammars

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142446014#/?channel=RES_BUY

I love this, just the garden and views would sell it for me.
Remove all fruniture and frlliy blinds and you would have a good blank to start decorating.
It is currently 2 flats, so you can tuen it back into a house quite easily.
Not too close to neighbours either.

babbygabby · 27/11/2023 21:25

I find it very odd that so many posters don’t realise you can add character to homes, and seem to think you’re obliged to buy it with the house.

It doesn't really make sense to pay top dollar for a house that's been "done" to do it again to your taste.

Diyextension · 27/11/2023 21:30

I think its a big improvement to what used to be there.

Would you buy this house?

The house is “done” as in fully renovated - it only requires paint and good styling. I could make it chic very easily. The bathrooms and kitchen are not what I would have chosen but they’re not offensive and everything else can be fixed. Very similar houses in London sell for 3-6 million+

It’s totally fixable. It’s all about colour, style, good art, a mix of antique and modern pieces - personal style and good design transforms houses. I could make it look like a completely different place fairly quickly.
