Quooker vs Qettle vs Kettle

maddogwoman20 · 26/11/2023 21:31

Hi everyone. I went to a kitchen showroom yesterday and was basically told absolutely everyone has a Quooker nowadays and I would be mad not to get one. I have considered these several times in the past but could never justify the cost, however the sales lady made me feel I was seriously missing out. My research suggests they are

  1. obviously way more expensive to buy than a kettle and standard tap
  2. no cheaper to run (max 1p per day)
  3. take up space under the sink
  4. require maintenance
  5. only have 2 years warranty which doesn't show a great deal of confidence in their product
For me I feel there is too much to go wrong. I have been gradually going lower tech over the last 7 years after various smart technology (lighting etc) has failed and/or moves on too quickly etc. I have no problem waiting 3 minutes for the kettle to boil to make tea or pour over the pasta and I am fairly convinced I would probably burn myself using the tap. I have also heard the tea tastes terrible. I imagine it would with anything other than the true 100 degree ones, but I have heard it even tastes awful with the Qettles and Quookers? I would like to hear your experiences. I understand the Qettle requires six monthly filter changes at over £32 a go and cleaning of the tank. So, assuming the Quooker requires no such maintenance this is around an additional £80 per year so the saving is eradicated over time. Has anyone had a Quooker for more than 2 years? Have you had to do any maintenance or repairs? Does anyone also have the food insinkerators? Are they any good? Thanks so much.

If you give half a crap about your environmental impact stick to a kettle.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 26/11/2023 21:41

A boiling water tap was on the list of upgrades when we bought our house

We opted for almost everything on the list except that - we've been in the house 3 months now and I don't feel I've missed out at all and I drink a lot of tea!

You're so wrong.
Quooker taps are eco-friendly in themselves and much kinder to the environment than kettles. Kettles are known to waste both water and energy. Quooker vacuum-insulation mechanism ensures that only 10W of energy consumption is used to maintain water at a hot temperature This energy efficiency does make them a more environmentally conscious choice. Boiling water taps also help cut down on water waste. It's estimated 67% of people overfill their kettle every time they use it. This leads to an astounding 3500 tonnes of wasted CO2 every single day!

Just that really! If you have one do you love it or regret it?

Just replaced our kitchen but decided to stick with a traditional kettle. I just felt it was too expensive, a burn accident with kids more likely and it wasn't important. I absolutely don't regret it!

EffinMagicFairy · 26/11/2023 21:46

We’ve had a boiling water tap for 4 years and would never go back to a kettle, ours is a Hotspot Titanium, we change the filter once a year. We also have the Insinkerator waste disposal, maintenance free so far, I wouldn’t be without this now either, we still compost but any bits go down the sink.

KnittedCardi · 26/11/2023 21:48

My friend is so proud of hers. I always ask for coffee, tea tastes awful.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 26/11/2023 21:49

We did our kitchen recently and didn't get a quooker. I was in two minds about getting one, the kitchen company didn't push it at all, they seemed not convinced about them. My sister made me a cuppa just before we got our kitchen job done and I had to hand the tea back to her saying the kettle must not have boiled fully. It was then she said oh it's a quooker, not the kettle. That was enough to convince me not to get one. Maintenance costs and filters and stuff too much hassle I reckoned.

lunar1 · 26/11/2023 22:43

I gave a quooker, is never go back

mrsbyers · 26/11/2023 22:45

We have a quettle , tea tastes fine but we have very nice water in our area

RandomMess · 26/11/2023 22:47

We use a hob kettle on our induction hob. Fantastic.

GreatGateauxsby · 26/11/2023 22:49

If you live in a hard water area I wouldn't
Two of our friends have them and don't love them/regret them.

App13 · 27/11/2023 09:04

I have a Quooker with Cube and wouldn't be without it. I have gallons of tea a day, furthermore i prefer filtered water for dd, sparkling water on occasion, but certainly cold chilled water with dinner.
and it does all that, their support is pretty decent, 2 yrs warranty and if a fault they'll come within a week, so keep your kettle handy. but I've now learned how to reset it so the boiling water tap is largely without problems.

maddogwoman20 · 27/11/2023 09:27

exactly my thoughts!

I have an insinkerator too. I have 5 yrs warranty on that but regardless, you need to fault check it yourself thoroughly.

it works very well. Though has a tendency to start smelling, so i put bicarbonate soda in it and then flush down with boiling water after a few hours.

For me, the Quooker was a life changer, the insinkerator is a nice to have.

Myfabby · 27/11/2023 09:33

@maddogwoman20

Everyone who says don't get one isn't anyone that has one. So they are relying on a friend said, in my sisters house , my neigbours did

.Ignore anyone who doesn't have first hand experience!

Diyextension · 27/11/2023 09:38

£1000 buys a lot of kettles

minipie · 27/11/2023 09:49

We have a Quooker… bloody love it. But mainly because it eliminates the wait for the kettle (once you have got used to not having to wait it is very hard to go back!!)

It does require maintenance every so often (not cheap) and we have a limescale filter which needs new cartridges every so often so it is not without ongoing cost.

Re children I personally think it is safer than them trying to lift and pour a full boiling kettle.

Re tea - I find quooker tea better. It is 100% boiling if you let it run a couple of secs, I find the very first little stream of water is not quite boiling but it is after that. And our kettle used to get full of limescale very quickly whereas we got the scale filter for the Quooker. My mum is notoriously fussy about her tea 🙄 and she has a quooker, she would definitely have noticed if it wasn’t top notch.

minipie · 27/11/2023 09:50

I definitely wouldn’t get it as a cost saving measure though. Haven’t done the maths but I’m sure it costs more than a kettle overall even spread over many years.

maddogwoman20 · 27/11/2023 09:55

Hotspot Titanium don't actually say 100 degrees. So I assume it isn't?

OP posts:
maddogwoman20 · 27/11/2023 09:57

Yes I noticed the first jet of water isn't boiling. The problem is if you put the cup under after it has started doesn't it splash and scald you?

OP posts:
maddogwoman20 · 27/11/2023 09:58

But those with one are probably too embarrassed to say they made a mistake ?!

Can I ask why? We have really awful water round here.

Just having our kitchen redone and the kitchen supplier's quote includes a Quooker as one of three "free" appliances.

I was going to have one anyway, but now wonder why it's an issue with hard water. (We are getting a water softener fitted as part of the refurb)

pickledandpuzzled · 27/11/2023 09:59

I don’t overfill the kettle. Literally boil exactly what we need, very rarely misjudge.

aswarmofmidges · 27/11/2023 09:59

So provided you overfill your kettle and don't leave the quooker running to get the water up to temperature for tea
... then the energy efficiency of a qooker is better , but the waste and emissions involved in maintenance would exceed any in use energy savings ?
