Would you buy a house backing onto a cemetery?

We're house hunting at the moment and like the look of a house that backs onto a cemetery. There is a substantial garden wall and high trees on the other side blocking the view of graves. The back garden has the advantages of being quiet and not overlooked.. However, would the proximity of a cemetery put you off, and do you think it would be difficult to sell in future?

I'd bloody love it! Nice and quiet and plenty of room for my cats to go hunting.

CheesyJacketPotato · 21/11/2023 17:34

It will never be developed & view spoiled

If you can get it at a really good price. As it will be difficult to sell.

@chillin12 I was always absolutely terrified of the possibility of something paranormal, but after actually experiencing it I can now walk back to bed in low light at night and not hurry as I think something is going to get me. It’s only recent, maybe I will go back to being scared. The paranormal thing was most likely in my head and not real.

It was 100% most DEFINITELY in your head 🤣

K4tM · 21/11/2023 17:47

Why not? It’s the Dead Center of town.

caringcarer · 21/11/2023 18:18

No, I can't think of anywhere worse.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 21/11/2023 19:31

It wouldn't put me off at all. I love churches & graveyards.

however, I would check on the water runoff. I don't want extra fertiliser! & check out the earliest date they could apply to sell/build in the land etc.

You’ve never seen The Night of the Living Dead (1985)? That’s exactly what happens

Before my time, I'm not a fan of the genre, stbxh is. Are they the slow lurching dead kind? Not half as scary as the nore modern super fast, strong ones which are my point of reference for zombie apocalypses.

LindaDawn · 21/11/2023 20:31

I love cemeteries, find them beautiful. Love trying to read the inscriptions on headstones and imagining who the people were and how they lived. Can’t be built on. Nothing will change, no noisy neighbours so yes I would definitely buy.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 21/11/2023 20:36

@K4tM 😂
I would probably pay more to live beside a cemetery, especially an old one. Sounds lovely.
and re zombie apocalypse/ reanimated corpses, I intend to go quickly in these scenarios rather than scratch out a living eating cockroaches, so best to be first in line.

WelcomeToMonkeyTown · 21/11/2023 21:06

I live opposite a cemetery and its fine.

I have a lovely unobstructed view and no cars park on that side of the road as there's no houses.

Round the corner is a large free car park that serves the cemetery which means my visitors always have somewhere to park Smile

The only thing I will say is that when there is a funeral I do feel obliged to not make too much noise out of respect . In the winter there is usually one once a week but it's generally when my kids are at school. There's been some amazing music though. We had a full brass band last week and in the summer there was a Hells Angels funeral and my street was full of about 200 old hairy leather-clad bikers who were the nicest sweetest guys Smile

Wouldn't put me off, but I'd only commit to the purchase once I'd assessed the risk and convinced myself there was a solid, viable contingency plan for dealing with a zombie apocalypse.

This way of thinking should apply to any house purchase

Seagrassbasket · 21/11/2023 21:09

Nope. Not for me. Wouldn’t even finish looking round it once I saw the graveyard!

MonaDaVinci · 21/11/2023 21:36

I'd love it, nice and peaceful (hopefully).

Tiddlywinkly · 21/11/2023 21:39

I used to live next to a very large old cemetery which still takes burials. I loved it. Beautiful established greenery, quiet etc. In fact, I discovered a few relatives buried there - great grandmother etc and some famous residents. It was also a peaceful haven during my first mat leave as a lonely, crying, and at that point, undiagnosed autistic mum. I spent hours wheeling my pram around.

The only time it was a pain was key days like Mother's Day when idiots would park directly opposite our road. Nightmare to get out.

Much more plus points than negative. I will be buried there.

TallTrees78 · 21/11/2023 21:43

I never thought I would but now live in a house opposite a cemetery.

There's a wall and then hedge so from downstairs can't see any headstones.

From upstairs can only see a couple of headstones as it's an old cemetery with loads of trees and landscaping. It just looks like a very large gated park and has opening and closing times too so never anyone in it in the evening.

It's nice and quiet, I like fact not overlooked, and don't need to worry about being built on. I wasn't sure in the beginning but liked the house so much that I went for it. No regrets at all!

Aria999 · 22/11/2023 01:05

We lived in a flat overlooking a beautiful old cemetery. It was really peaceful and full of trees.
Possibly a slight drag when we came to sell it but we managed.

mathanxiety · 22/11/2023 02:35

I'd love to.
It would never be built over and I don't find graves an off-putting sight.

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 22/11/2023 02:55

Not after my brother & SIL lived next to one attached to a crematorium and I'm not kidding, the STENCH from the crematorium was eye watering

GuitarGeorgina · 22/11/2023 07:20

Most cemeteries don’t have crematoriums.

Nortam · 22/11/2023 08:33

For me it would be a positive and I'd pick a house backing onto a cemetery over one that wasn't. (If the houses were similar, I mean)

Loloj · 22/11/2023 11:09

I think you will get a bit of a mixed response here but for the people who would be put off you will get as many people who see it as a major advantage - not overlooked, quiet etc so I wouldn’t worry about re-sale in future. If you like the house then go for it.

fridayrai · 22/11/2023 12:51

It would out me off. I get spooked easily and my imagination would go overboard if I was alone in the house and I heard noises.

Our house is quiet and not overlooked so I'm sure it's possible to find one that has those features but not backing on to a cemetery.

Not really where I live. It's a built up town. There are houses backing onto the local park but they command an uplift of some £300k compared to other similar houses even a couple of streets away that back onto all the other houses.

Doone22 · 22/11/2023 19:52

Quiet neighbours, unlikely to get a new build house development there. What's your problem?

Disturbia81 · 22/11/2023 21:43

Definitely a plus in all ways, can't understand why it wouldn't be.
