NC because potentially outing.

Refurbing our bathroom, 2 adults, 1 teen.

Current layout in first picture, proposed layout in the second. Boiler will be moved into the bathroom from a bedroom. Shower over bath.

I always find mumsnetters so knowledgeable with layouts!! Please help me find the best layout for my bathroom! Really appreciate your ideas. Thank you!

If you buy a shorter Japanese style soaking bath for under the window and move the sink and toilet to where they are in the proposed pic then you could probably fit a separate shower in the bottom left corner next to the door

MaggieFS · 13/11/2023 10:33

Love a challenge!

  • do you definitely want to keep a traditional style bath tub? Are you open to a Japanese style soaking tub?
  • does the boiler have to move into the bathroom? Do you have a loft it could go in?

I would suggest bath under window, but IIRC, you couldn't have it under the boiler.

Yes boiler needs to go there, no loft :(
Bath under window would be amazing otherwise

We love taking baths, so definitely need a bathtub. No experience with the japanese ones but I would prefer a standard bath probably

Have you checked how easy it is to move the soil pipe?

I'd also put something in front of your current toilet the distance the sink will be (a cardboard box is useful here)and check knee space, especially if you have tall people in the family. You can get slightly taller toilets to help with this.

Or can the sink not go under the window?

Other things to consider. Where will you have a towel rail or radiator? Being able to grab your towel as you come out of the shower or bath is important.

HidingFromDD · 13/11/2023 12:01

Where are the taps on your bath going? I don’t like having the back of my head next to the toilet (and yes, toilet is clean ) so I’d reverse toilet and washbasin. Alternatively could the boiler cupboard go by the door and start the bath where the boiler cupboard is? I’d suggest under the window but think you’d get problems with the shower then

SoupDragon · 13/11/2023 12:05

To avoid the head/toilet issue, you could build a half wall between the bath and the toilet. You could turn it into storage.

That's exactly what we did! It works really well, also gives me a 'shelf' on which I put plants to soften the room.

Pepper12345 · 13/11/2023 19:01

What's the boxing in the corner and what are it's dimensions?

Apart from that your dimensions are exactly the same as our bathroom. We redid it this year and have a layout like this picture which works really well and means we have separate shower and bath.

Would love to have this!! Alas, the boiler will need to be to the right hand side of the window near the external wall

We will have a storage cupboard around the boiler 500 x 600 proposed

That's interesting! Didn't even think about the toilet near head issue..

Interesting idea. What do they look like? Are these those deeper ones where you basically sit in?

Towel rail inclusive radiator proposed left hand side when you enter

I'd leave the proposed layout of bath and loo, but consider building the boiler and sink into a vanity unit under the window (building out the boiler cupboard so that it extends as far as the loo and using a narrow sink if needed).

Never ever put the head of your bath next to the toilet! 🤢

SoupDragon · 13/11/2023 21:37

The head of my bath is next to the toilet. It's not touching it nor is anyone using it whilst I'm in the bath and th lid is always down. Germs aren't going to jump across the gap! My bath actually doesn't have a head or a foot end really though but I'd rather have my back to the toilet rather than look at it.

bolwin1 · 13/11/2023 22:26

It's probably going to be difficult to move the toilet, especially if the proposed location wall isn't an external one.
I'd rehang the door so it opens into the landing. Then move the sink to between the toilet & door. Shift the bath up as you'd already suggested.

Chewbecca · 13/11/2023 22:29

Is it not possible just to switch the sink & bath position? Loo much better on outside wall usually.

Geneticsbunny · 14/11/2023 08:18

https://www.omnitub.co.uk/ have a look on this site. It has come up in quite a few other Mumsnet threads. It will give you a few different size options for baths.

You also need to think about where the waste pipe for the loo will run if it is on an inside wall. There should be space to box it in and run it down the side of a bath behind the bath panel but definitely worth checking with the bathroom fitter.

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 14/11/2023 08:28

I'd put the boiler elsewhere (kitchen? Utility? Under stairs cupboard?).

Bath under window, a 1.6m bath is perfectly normal size. Toilet and sink move along a bit and seperate shower behind door.

jannier · 14/11/2023 08:38

Moving as soil pipe is major work and very expensive most planners would advise you to keep toilet where it is unless money is no object.

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 14/11/2023 09:21

We moved our toilet without moving the soil pipe, just changed the length of the connection on the outside wall.

Africa2go · 14/11/2023 11:00

Agree with pp about putting the bath under the window - it looks as though you have about 164cm+ depending on wall configuration - your builder will probably be able to reduce the wall so that you can get a 1700 bath in. It will make the room so much more functional and look bigger. I'd do something like this (but sinks on other side of the wall due to your door position) - as you walk in, toilet on right hand wall, then sink, then bath under window.

ReviewingTheSituation · 14/11/2023 11:16

I'd leave the toilet where it is (save on hassles with the soil pipe), and then just swap the sink and bath around. Then the sink is near the toilet, and the bath is suitably distant from it.

Bath under the window would be nice, but not at the expense of compromising the soil pipe by taking it round an extra 90 degree bend.

AnneButNotHathaway · 14/11/2023 12:19

There is a bathroom design software that can help you with planning, you can add your blueprint there and build a 3d model based on it.
