Decisions, decision - Dorchester, Weymouth or Poole??

We are moving to Dorset later this year. We originally wanted to move to Dorchester - good schools, lovely small town - and then we saw a gorgeous house in Radipole, Weymouth. Not sure about traffic, proposed bypass near to house and schools though. Where would do go and why? What do you think of Poole and Bournemouth??

Swd - it is lovely, but thatched (dh doesn't "do" thatched) and is too villagy for me (coming from SELondon, need people / cars). But didn't realise you got so much house for your money in Winfrith... GG - Paul someone.. can't remember his surname though.

charminster.......hmmmmm.......depends on where really.

flame lives in charminster so could probably give an up-to-date impression of living there, but we lived there when first married, and DH's grandma is still living there at 95, so can give our impression.....

down the bottom end (ie, towards the five-ways pub/queens park avenue) it is actually nice and quite quiet. Queens park ave is very posh and looks over the golf course (we, don;t live there, and could never afford to either).

St. Walberger school (catholic) is a very good one so I have heard, as is St' Luke's (C of E), and IMO Queens Park infants and juniors (where mine go).

they link to lots of secondary schools, grammer (girls and boys),other girls and boys, and also two mixed schools. only one mixed school has a bad rep.

Flame lives at the 'top end' of charminster. it is near the uni, so has a very 'uni' feel to it, and is very very international in types of shops and restaurants. On one drive thro recently I counted over 20 different nationality restaurants.

flame loves living there as far as she has told me, altho parking is a huge issue as many, if not most, of the houses were built early 1900's so not many driveways and some of the roads are rather narrow.

looks rather run-down in part, but IMO, tis a very vibrant part of bournemouth (to quote estate agent speak)

My brother lives in Broadstone (Poole) which seems ok.
We also have relatives in Dorchester and used to holiday there as children.Always seemed nice and clean ifyswim.
Cannot believe how reasonable some of these places are, tbh.
We live in Cheshire and £400k doesn't buy much here.Six beds would be nearly £700k at least.
Lovely part of the world, Dorset, anyway.

Psychomum - have my map in front of me (sad, I know ), and am trying to work out top / bottom end of Charminster. Is the top end nearer to the coast / East Cliff?

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 10/03/2008 20:45

erm............no isea, altho off the top of my head, it would the top end is nearer the beaches etc.

will go google earth it and tell for certain.

hang on........

TheHonEnid · 10/03/2008 20:46

there is a charminster near dorchester too

the secondary school in dorchester is one of the bes tin the country

Weymouth is a bit of a dump tbh and my friends who live there are despearate to get to dorch (fot he school mainly)

Poole is more urban and funky but also ab it footballers wives

Dorchester is like everyowher in west dorset - god's waiting room

Psychomum5 · 10/03/2008 20:50

yup, top end nearer to the cliffs etc.....lowther road, sterwart road onwards.

bottom end is queens park ave, charminster ave.

DH's grandma lives in charminster ave, and has done for 50 odd years!!!!

If we had the money to move, we would head that way!

Psychomum5 · 10/03/2008 20:52

oh, and if we had your budget (if you are serious about the £400k), then we would go to one of the roads around the golf course
