Liverpool areas

So we are in the very early stages of looking to move to Liverpool. But I need some advice on areas!

We have 2 DC- primary age so really need to take schools into account.

I've been recommended South Liverpool: Aigburth/Calderstones but I have seen that you don't get much house for your money.

Where as Formby and other areas in the North of Liverpool you do.

So if anyone can share some wisdom on areas as we are happy to look anywhere really with good community, good schools etc.

NC but I live in Birkdale and while you get a decent amount of house for your money it's a 40 min train ride or 50 min drive into Liverpool city centre, it's not where you want to live if you want the Liverpool lifestyle. We do have the golf clubs and Birkdale village and the schools are good but an Uber home after a night out in "town" is costly!

Aigburth, Calderstones, Woolton, Allerton are what I'd be looking at personally if I wanted to live IN Liverpool.

If you want to live close to then yes look at Ainsdale, Birkdale, Formby, Crosby.

You're near me then!

I grew up in Crosby, lives in Ainsdale for a while then recently moved from Waterloo (I love the place) to Wirral. Would Wirral be an option? Grammars and more for your money in some areas than over the water

Can I ask what part of the country do you live now?

Ofcourse,

I'm originally from Birmingham, Hubby from London, we've moved around a bit but have been in staffordshire for 3 years now.

What’s your budget OP?

Max: £700k

However that will have to be the 'perfect' home. So we have been looking at 'project' houses which we could make into our perfect home.

7 bedroom detached house for sale in Westbourne Road, Birkdale, Southport, PR8 (rightmove.co.uk) needs a little work, but lovely. I wish I could afford it myself!

Wow! I get what you mean that we will get way more for our money!

My friend lives in Cressington park. That is lovely. Aigburth is also nice

prawncocktailqueen · 08/11/2023 20:58

@NoWordForFluffy we might know each other! 🤣

Ha, yes! 🤣

Reckon this one is the nicest of the bunch if you search L18 £550-700k on Rightmove.
Close to town, near the bus, near schools, walkable to park 20 mins to airport. But there are lots around Calderstones park with potential to extend or add value as most have large gardens. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/134776610

And way overpriced even for the location!

Ormskirk/Aughton are both worth considering. Both very family oriented and direct train line into Liverpool. Lovely safe areas, with good schools. Nice restaurants and cafes etc. and Ormskirk still has a traditional market twice a week and an artisan market once a month.

SilentBob · 08/11/2023 22:05

I have lived and worked in both Mossley Hill and Rainhill since moving to the Liverpool area 6 years ago and highly recommend both areas- Rainhill slightly more so than L18 but I like the 'village' feel of Rainhill and parking in Mossley Hill can be bloody awful (especially on the roads ending in 'dale')

Calderstones and Woolton are mostly lovely areas (I have family in both) but can be quite OTT expensive if you're not careful.

Paramummy3 · 08/11/2023 22:13

Another vote for southport for getting a lot for your money. Very good schools too!

Flossieskeeper · 08/11/2023 22:13

I agree with ormskirk Aughton and maghull . If you are used to rural living they could be a good compromise. Ormskirk is a university town as well.
im not convinced Formby is as good value as it used to be. Far better houses in Southport for the money.

The problem with Liverpool and Wirral is they both have an 11+ system for the really good schools. If you know your dc are academically capable of passing 11+ already it’s not an issue. If you don’t then Sefton and west lancs are better bets.

annieloulou · 08/11/2023 22:22

Southport is 20 miles north of Liverpool, which may not sound much but there a lot of towns and therefore traffic in between, trains are a good 50 minutes. It’s very different from Liverpool and the south suburbs in particular.

I lived in Crosby growing up - it’s a large town and we lived nowhere near either of the stations, or the beach, so bear that in mind. Don’t think all houses there are by a beach or the stations - they’re not! We were a 15 minute car ride to Crosby beach and. 30 min walk to Waterloo station.

I live on the Wirral now and you will be closer to the coastline in most places. I’ve lived on the (cheaper) East side and (more expensive) West side. Both are easier to get into Liverpool than Crosby, Ainsdale etc.

Liverpool only has one grammar school. No other schools are based on academic ability.

annieloulou · 08/11/2023 22:29

There is no 11 plus in Liverpool (apart from one school the Bluecoat) or Sefton any more. The Wirral still has it, mainly on west Wirral, and also has comprehensives, although they do vary from area to area. All have private schools as well.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/11/2023 22:31

My friend was going to move to Ainsdake. It's a lovely area. But as a PP said, it took nearly an hour to get from Liverpool and takes the same on the train.
