Has anyone got / had a dark blue bedroom? Do you like it? I'm considering!

I’m about to paint mine a quite dark blue-grey!

GammonAndEggs · 07/10/2023 07:59

I do. Wallpaper is darker than it looks here. Navy with a faint gold pattern.
Used lots of white as it’s a dark room.

My ds did his dark teal earlier this year. Pic was taken just after we'd put the wardrobes etc back in. It looks different blue in different lights.

At our previous house we painted the main bedroom Craig & Rose French Turquoise. It was a lovely large, bright room with big square bay window (with window seat) overlooking the leafy garden and glazed door onto the balcony. All the joinery including the period fire surround was white. We had oak furniture and a cream brass bed plus a Liberty rug based on a Voysey design in teal/terracotta. Loads of art on the walls and deep coral curtains. It was a beautiful (imho!) room.

When we were selling, I remember some very rude woman demanding to know why we'd chosen such an awful colour for a bedroom!

Blamethecat57 · 07/10/2023 09:48

Mine is similar to @gammonandeggs.
I have a lot of white paint work.
Bedding is a pattern with mustard in.
The room gets lots of sun.
I have wooden blinds.
The furniture is wooden too.
I don't know anything about fashions and style but I like it.
It's cosy and feels like a sanctuary to me.

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/10/2023 10:17

We have one dark navy blue wall in our bedroom and full dark navy blue cotton curtains (we have huge windows that take up most of one of the other walls).

The other three walls are painted cream (although one wall is a built in wardobe and third of it are teak louvre doors).

We love it. It looks smart and cosy.

These sound lovely! I'm keen to do the whole room rather than a feature wall, which is a risk, but I think it'll be broken up enough due to things like bathroom door, shelving, wardrobes, bed. The furniture is wood so will be going for a boho vibe. What's the worst that can happen... Can always paint over it!

@LibertyLily what a meany pants! When I moved in here I painted the living room fireplace dark blue, got several comments how horrible that was and when would I decorate - it was the one thing I had done! It's definitely marmite. But I like colour. The living room is olive now.

Not blue but very very dark aubergine (dulux heritage). I also did the picture rail and skirting in the eggshell dark aubergine. I love it, very restful and an unexpected bonus is the room is so dark at night that I am getting a much better sleep too - don’t think it’s a coincidence 😁

Thehonestybox · 07/10/2023 11:35

I did last year, but repainted after 6 months. I think it only works if you have south facing window which will create a warm glow in the afternoon. Mine is north facing and I didn't think it would be a big deal, but was actually quite depressing

Indecisivelurcher · 07/10/2023 11:41

@Judashascomeintosomemoney that sounds nice, I will have a look at that colour actually. My bedroom is east facing which is another reason I am thinking of doing a dark colour. It's minty green at the moment which is a bit bright first thing!

Spiders rest unseen on dark walls

abbey44 · 07/10/2023 12:25

I do. I started by painting my wardrobe (a large one) with Frenchic Hornblower and liked it so much I did the whole room and the bedside chests of drawers. My room is south-facing and the curtains and bedspread (blue and white toile de juoy) give enough lift so that it doesn’t feel too dark. I absolutely love it.

ClematisBlue49 · 07/10/2023 13:18

I had a dark blue bedroom in my first flat. It was north-east facing. I ended up changing it to a light blue as, like @Thehonestybox I found it depressing for most of the day. One person's cosy is another's claustrophobic and gloomy, I suppose. The room looked about twice the size with the lighter colour.

My next bedroom is going to be south-facing and I considered dark blue again as Hammonds do fitted wardrobes in a really nice shade that would look good with matching walls, but in the end I decided against it. I think, just because you like a colour, it isn't necessarily the best colour for the space.

But the good thing about paint, is that it is fairly easy to make a change if you don't like it.

My friend painted her bedroom very dark navy blue because she worked shifts as a paramedic and it helped her to get to sleep during daylight when she needed to. She said it was really helpful. It worked well for that. Otherwise, she said it was a nuisance, because she could never find anything without the lights on....

TattiePants · 07/10/2023 15:06

Not dark blue but my bedroom is very dark green, also with wood furniture and I love it. I’ve never found it too dark and I’ve even painted the fitted wardrobes dark green.

I did in my old home and loved it! Had dark dark navy walls, with jewel coloured soft furnishings (dark plummy fushia, teal) and brushed gold details like lamp, mirror frame. The wood was also dark mahogany colour. The room was quite large and could take it. It made the whole room feel indulgent and plush in a hotel type way. We haven't replicated it in our new home only because the baby cot and accessories kind of killed that vibe...

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 07/10/2023 15:35

@TattiePants where are your bed and side tables from??

TattiePants · 07/10/2023 15:51

@SteveBuscemisRheumyEye they're from West Elm. If I remember correctly the range was called Acorn.

Edit: the colour is Acorn, the range is mid-century.

Thanks, @TattiePants!

DappledThings · 07/10/2023 23:59

I'm about to paint ours F&B Wine Dark. It's a mid-green at the moment which I love but needs repainting as had to be partially stripped back to brick and we thought we'd go for a change.

Howsimplywonderful · 08/10/2023 11:42

Ours is painted dark blue. It’s south west facing, so does get a lot of natural light.

I'm worrying now that it's too much! Not sure what else to go for...

Samanabanana · 08/10/2023 14:31

Our old bedroom was north east facing. I painted everything in F&B Hague blue, including copious amounts of fitted wardrobes. It looked amazing and felt cosy and comfortable. I think it's ok to lean into a dark room with dark colours - makes it seem a considered choice rather than trying to make a dark room bright with a light scheme!

SJ89SJ · 08/10/2023 14:42

@GammonAndEggs I couldn't help notice your doors! They are the same as some in the house I've just moved in to and I'd love to match the rest. Do you know where you got them from?
Thanks!
