Can't buy a log pallet as no access to back garden - where else can I source cheap logs?

I would love to buy a pallet of logs as the saving vs single bags is huge. Unfortunately there's no way a forklift can access the back garden, and we don't have a front garden.

Where is the cheapest place to source logs these days?

We used to get these Homefire logs from B&Q - they were £19 a bag this time last year but now £35 which is daylight robbery!

Everyone loves the smell and sound of a real log fire, and with the Homefire Kiln Dried Hardwood Logs making it easy to light and with a high burn temperature you will be set up for those cosy winter nights in.

I'm thinking of getting a log store for the back garden and then filling it up manually with bags of logs, it's just where can I find good value ones - clearly not at B&Q!

Just run them through?

Everyone gets logs delivered on our street - we do have back garden access but nobody uses a forklift to get them through, they just run through with the logs, or use a wheelbarrow.

Replyingtoyou · 26/09/2023 11:13

Ive seen people get the logs piled at the front, or buy a large dumpy bag, then carry them through the house?

AlisonDonut · 26/09/2023 11:15

Yeah that's what we do and did in the UK as well. Drop onto a tarp and then just barrow them in.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 26/09/2023 11:15

Whereabouts are you, watter? If you're near privately owned woodland, sometimes the owners will let you have logs. Here and there you may find 'Logs for labour' schemes where you put in 2-3 hours work in return for logs. We get all our firewood this way.

Do you mean run them through the house to the back?

So have them delivered to the front of the house and then put them in a wheelbarrow and wheel them to the back garden, and put them in a log store?

Why did I not think of this.

Yeah. I think that's a lot more normal than having a forklift. They get delivered in a big bag/crate, then just run them through the house and put them wherever you store them in the back garden. Takes half an hour and is a pretty good workout 😅

watter · 26/09/2023 11:20

I mean I don't have a wheelbarrow but I'm sure I could get over that hurdle! Grin

I can believe it haha! I don't know why I didn't just think of that!

Well, we had ours delivered to the wall behind our house and took them through the back but if you have no back gate then through the house it is.

Remember the tarp. It saves on the clean up.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/09/2023 11:23

Where are you and do you drive? Might sound a bit out there but my stepdad and friends got together and leased a bit of woodland for several years. They all spent Saturdays or Sundays clearing dead wood. Was fun, great exercise and worked out very cheaply.

Janieforever · 26/09/2023 11:24

Our log store is quite far down the garden. Loose loads are the cheapest. Dude just tips them up at the top and we move them down. Loads of folks don’t have easy access to where they store logs. You just move them.

KievLoverTwo · 26/09/2023 11:26

You might not even need a wheelbarrow. When we got cubic metre bags delivered last year they dragged them off the van into the garage by hand. If you half empty one you might be able to drag the bags through the house with two of you. Those bags are so seriously sturdy that our farm shop gives us free kindling to return them.

Anyway, our supplier is our farm shop. Another local supplier is an independent garden centre. This year it's £90 for a cubic metre (about 750kg) or £10 cheaper if you buy two. That was a batch that was ready in April. Once they sell that lot it will go up £10 or £20 a bag.

They also do smaller nets, probably 20k bags, for £8.99.

Worth spending the time checking out little independents because the quality of wood is generally a lot better. The farm shop delivers for free and the garden centre £10 within about a 40 mile radius no matter the order size.

mumonthehill · 26/09/2023 11:28

Ours are delivered in a big bag and we then move them by hand. They pick up the bag the next time they deliver.

BarrelOfOtters · 26/09/2023 11:31

Buy a sack truck and move them through the house, or 2 of you could carry them.

We used to get a builder's bag delivered and move them through the house...

BarrelOfOtters · 26/09/2023 11:32

Also found Coals2Us were quite reasonable. And a local company you could buy a pallet but they'd deliver it in usable amounts, i.e. they'd store it for you.

MenopauseSucks · 26/09/2023 11:44

My Dad & his neighbours all order their logs together (delivery cheaper).
Everything is dumped on tarps in front gardens.
They then spend a happy afternoon cutting them down to the right size & either carrying or wheeling them into the wood stores in their back gardens.

They also order oil deliveries for the same day as again it's cheaper!

HauntingSecrets · 26/09/2023 11:46

But then you have to wait years for them to season if you can’t kiln dry them.

Readingtheworld · 26/09/2023 11:50

Our pallet is delivered to the pavement at the front and we wheelbarrow them through to the back garden. Can you get a sack truck or something to move them through the house so you are taking more than an armful at a time?

morellamalessdrama · 26/09/2023 11:50

We have ours delivered to the front and we pack it into trugs and take it to the log shed.

It takes about an hour and I dread it Grin but it's only once a year.

Like a PP said, make sure you put tarp down first as the bits of wood are a bugger to clean up.

jannier · 26/09/2023 11:50

Log burners are worse than gas for the environment though aren't they?

AlltheFs · 26/09/2023 11:54

We have only ever had loose loads, never a forklift. But ours doesn’t come from a big company just a local log man.

Our log store isn’t at the back but they just tip it and we move it by barrow and stack it ourselves.
