Can't buy a log pallet as no access to back garden - where else can I source cheap logs?

I would love to buy a pallet of logs as the saving vs single bags is huge. Unfortunately there's no way a forklift can access the back garden, and we don't have a front garden.

Where is the cheapest place to source logs these days?

We used to get these Homefire logs from B&Q - they were £19 a bag this time last year but now £35 which is daylight robbery!

Everyone loves the smell and sound of a real log fire, and with the Homefire Kiln Dried Hardwood Logs making it easy to light and with a high burn temperature you will be set up for those cosy winter nights in.

We
dont have a wheel barrow either so just use which ever wheelie bin is empty!

Log burners are worse than gas for the environment though aren't they?

This might blow your mind but some of us aren’t on gas!

Yep, no gas here, we rely on wood to heat our home in the winter. We have a back burner so it does the hot water and radiators too.

Worth checking on facebook market place as quite a few smaller netted bags are for sale.

Well, we had ours delivered to the wall behind our house and took them through the back but if you have no back gate then through the house it is.

Remember the tarp. It saves on the clean up.

Oh my life. We do have a back gate, although vehicles can't get to it - long story - and hence the premise of the thread. But yes - they could deliver to the nearest point and then we could just whip them into the garden without going through the house.

Dear God. I promise I do have multiple degrees!! I just didn't think!!

You might not even need a wheelbarrow. When we got cubic metre bags delivered last year they dragged them off the van into the garage by hand. If you half empty one you might be able to drag the bags through the house with two of you. Those bags are so seriously sturdy that our farm shop gives us free kindling to return them.

Anyway, our supplier is our farm shop. Another local supplier is an independent garden centre. This year it's £90 for a cubic metre (about 750kg) or £10 cheaper if you buy two. That was a batch that was ready in April. Once they sell that lot it will go up £10 or £20 a bag.

They also do smaller nets, probably 20k bags, for £8.99.

Worth spending the time checking out little independents because the quality of wood is generally a lot better. The farm shop delivers for free and the garden centre £10 within about a 40 mile radius no matter the order size.

Thank you for the prices and sizes, this is useful info!

Also found Coals2Us were quite reasonable. And a local company you could buy a pallet but they'd deliver it in usable amounts, i.e. they'd store it for you.

Ah that is an interesting option too!

Could be - but I'm infertile so overall I think I'm allowed to have a log burner?

We get 2 huge bags delivered and take them through to the wood store, but this year I paid for the delivery men to do that bit for me as I've hurt my ankle.

GreyBlackBay · 26/09/2023 12:10

We get the pallet dropped curbside and carry them through the house, putting tarps on the floor.

Yep it's a pain but saves £££

And yes you may be causing a bit of an inconvenience for neighbours and passers by but it's for an hour max, would be worse if you were having a kitchen fitted.

Unicorntastic · 26/09/2023 12:11

Surely the pallet delivery will drop them off right outside your gate? We have an alley at the back of our garden big enough for a lorry but he still dropped them off outside my gate as the gardens are slightly raised, it’s knackering but you only have to unload them once a year I guess.

Diyextension · 26/09/2023 12:12

The wheelie bin method works well ( from experience ). Or borrow a wheelbarrow of a neighbour? I’ve lent one of mine to neighbours before .

Np. You want kiln dried hard wood. Not softwood.

theemmadilemma · 26/09/2023 12:28

Yep do it that way! The log hauling and stacking is yearly ritual. We have 6 bags arriving tonight!

GasPanic · 26/09/2023 13:05

I would get them delivered on the pallet and then transfer them through in manageable lumps. It shouldn't take too long.

Get some sort of truck. Make sure it doesn't mark your floor. Something like a dolly (flat square of wood with wheels at the corner) is great for moving stuff around.

GasPanic · 26/09/2023 13:06

Also you may not be able to get truck access to the back gate, but you may be able to get pallet loader access.

Love it!

I need to buy a nice log store now! I’m so happy this is feasible!

We can’t get anything with wheels directly to the back gate (think along the lines of a fence stile in the way).

We used to get it delivered to the front and used a wheelbarrow to move it. We got Oak, Cherry, or Walnut as we lived near some orchards so the wood came from there.
