my hardwood floor is being ripped out by mistake for lvt

i feel like the dumbest person on earth. i thought its cheap laminate so decided to give the living room a facelift. the seller of the house didnt say anything about the floor. the surveyor has put laminate in the survey. even the guy brought in to do the bedroom flooring says its laminate as it has all the flaws of a badly laid laminate floor - getting bouncy in the middle as the click has not been done right.

the flooring company (a different one to bedroom) started today. i was so surprised by the care they took to take out the old flooring. then they said its very good wood and by the look of it they will reuse it.

and here i am spending a fortune taking it out and replacing it with cheap wood alike lvt....

sorry just need to rant.

Get them to stop!!

Dogsitterwoes · 25/09/2023 12:09

Can you ask them to stop and re-fit it properly? Might lose money but it'll be a better floor.

fruitbrewhaha · 25/09/2023 12:10

Eh, Who said they could reuse it. It’s still yours.

Hang on - that's YOUR floor. If you want to keep it tell them. They shouldn't be assuming they can just take it.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 25/09/2023 12:43

What? Why aren't you stopping them?

MaybeSmaller · 25/09/2023 14:07

WTF? Unless you've agreed to sell them the floor it's still yours!

Stop them, tell them to put it all back!

user76541055773 · 25/09/2023 14:09

Surely it still needs to be fixed if it was bouncy?

Sell the old floor to pay for the new one.

ChillyB · 25/09/2023 14:13

They can't just help themselves to your flooring. The cheek of it!

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 25/09/2023 14:18

"They will reuse it"??

It's not theirs, it's your property. Why don't you stop them?

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 25/09/2023 14:19

I never cease to be amazed by how passive some MNers seem to be. I don't come across this level of passivity anywhere in real life.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/09/2023 14:21

Omg, why aren't you stopping them?? Also, they can't just take your floor.

It's absolutely remarkable, isn't it? I've never seen anything like it.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 25/09/2023 14:27

Their contract probably says lift and remove old floor from site.

TinglingTangling · 25/09/2023 14:27

Tell them to stop and keep it yourself?

And? They still can't do it against her wishes. She can just tell them to stop work altogether.

yesssssss

Spotnessmonster · 25/09/2023 14:55

Surely your not going to let them take it??

nalakitty · 25/09/2023 15:26

Big relief - In closer inspection, the hardwood floor is not proper hardwood. only top layer is proper wood (but its thin and cannot withstand sanding) and the rest is particle board. am feeling a lot better now.

But another problem has arisen. the lvt is thin. and there is now a gap with the stair - which is proper hardwood that im keeping.

How should i bridge that gap?

One solution is to get lvt to the end of stair and use a stair nosing to cap it. But i cannot find a matching edge near me. delivery in a few days. the flooring company is here only today.

Any ideas? or the stair nosing is an easy diy.

Who are these dimwits you hired to install your floors? They can't tell the difference between real hardwood and laminate flooring? They don't know how to manage a gap and didn't anticipate this? The flooring people would need to come back and finish the job surely?

nalakitty · 25/09/2023 16:39

Feeling silly paying £3k for just an area of 20sqm. have found an L shaped moulding at b&q. hopefully it will work. and i will worry about the colour and texture mismatch later.

😱Are they a reputable company OP? That seems a very high price, particularly when they are not completing the job but have you scrabbling around for a solution yourself.

BlueMongoose · 25/09/2023 18:58

That seems very expensive. I don't know about labour costs for flooring, as we're doing our own, but we have costed up for solid oak parquet and the wood is about 1K for a 12' x 12' room, plus glue (expensive) and the ply base, still well under 2K exclusive of labour. And lvt should be fairly quick to fit.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 25/09/2023 19:01

£3k and they're not even making the edges look neat for you?!

Soontobe60 · 25/09/2023 19:07

Blimey! I paid half that for high spec engineered wood and fitting in a room that size!

nalakitty · 26/09/2023 07:40

There seems to be a premium for herringbone. But yes i have certainly overpaid. I should have checked prices for oak parquet. Looks like it is cheaper than herringbone LVT and it will have a better overall flow as staircase and hallway and rest of the house are solid oak. I wanted to get the house done asap so didnt check everything properly....a big lesson learnt..
