Kitchen - which do you prefer?

Help! I appreciate I am not giving much context (e.g. how it matches with other parts of the house etc).

Leaving all these aside, which kitchen do you think looks better between these two (or which would age quicker?).

All opinions are welcome :)

Prefer the lighter one

tiggergoesbounce · 15/09/2023 19:40

I prefer the darker one. I just think it looks like it has more about it.

JohnNolan · 15/09/2023 19:41

I terms of which will fatw less, go for the lighter one (I prefer the darker one but it will age much sooner). However I think the handles on both of them will age it too - can you have a handle less one instead?

weeRagamuffin · 15/09/2023 19:41

They are both nicer than my kitchen but the contrast seems ''off'' with both. For the picture with the darker cupboards, could you find a floor that is a grey/brown (not grey OR brown) and maybe teal coloured cupboards. It just doesn't look like the colours are working together.
For the second one, I'd go for properly white cupboards not off white. Not sure that the handles aren't a bit dated. I know nothing though.

I'll try and google.

housethatbuiltme · 15/09/2023 19:41

I think darker looks better... who knows for aging, get what you want and you should like it regardless of decade.

Superduper02 · 15/09/2023 19:42

Black one is nicer/more modern.

SpringSummerDreamer · 15/09/2023 19:43

Normally I like light kitchens, but here I prefer the darker one. The handles are less obtrusive and it has a more cohesive look.

tiggergoesbounce · 15/09/2023 19:43

Sorry i hadnt taken into account the floor. While i prefer the darker kitchen, i dont like either of the flooring. I think they both look cheap looking.

You could find a lighter more complimentary flooring for the darker kitchen.

CutesyUserName · 15/09/2023 19:43

Much prefer the left (lighter). I think the dark will age faster given that dark colours are currently a more popular kitchen choice. The cream is more classic.

Torganer · 15/09/2023 19:44

White, but don’t like the floor or grey worktop and splashback. Prefer the floor in the second picture.

Notellinganyone · 15/09/2023 19:44

Darker with light worktop is much nicer. I agree about the handles though - look cheap so source your own.

StoatofDisarray · 15/09/2023 19:45

It depends on the rest of the house but I like the dark one.

weeRagamuffin · 15/09/2023 19:45

Not saying I love these particular cupboards but see the way the floor is paler and the cupboards are brigher.

Kitchen - which do you prefer?
KissingUnderTheMistletoe · 15/09/2023 19:46

Darker one, but can you change the worktop for oak?? That would look lovely.

also agree on the handles, not a fan.

SM4713 · 15/09/2023 19:48

We've just spend 2yrs renovating and looking at 100's of kitchens, designs, colours, handles etc etc. I know this is likely just a suggested design in terms of handles and flooring etc. IMO-

  • grey already started to date a few years ago. IF you want a darker colour, I wouldn't get grey! Maybe navy instead?
  • The lighter colour makes the area look larger
  • I'd get different handles (again, this might be just a stock standard pic)
  • Get the wall cupboards to the ceiling. It provides extra storage and you won't have them collecting dust.
StEtienne93 · 15/09/2023 19:51

Lighter one.

Darker one looks oppressive and gloomy. Plus I think it will date more quickly. Lighter colour kitchens never truly fall out of style.

Redwinestillfine · 15/09/2023 19:51

The lighter one. The darker one looks dated.

HeddaGarbled · 15/09/2023 19:51

Lighter.

CatherinedeBourgh · 15/09/2023 19:55

Darker one is better in terms of the handles, the cooker hood and specially the lighting, but the units are too dark imo. At least the wall cabinets should be a paler colour.

pastaandpesto · 15/09/2023 19:59

I wouldn't get too hung up on what will date. EVEYTHING will date, with the exception perhaps of very high end, custom joinery in a period house.

IMO it's a mistake to think that going bland/neutral will mean it won't date as quickly, because colour is actually only one element of the design, and elements like worktop, flooring, lighting, ironmongery, layout and configuration are actually play a bigger, although less obvious, role in our overall impressions.

Personally I like the dark grey - it's fresher and less fussy to me. But my opinion doesn't matter - choose the kitchen you love now, without worrying too much about the future.

ConfusedMum1893 · 15/09/2023 20:02

Thank you all!

The grey is very 2018, prefer the cream one

Cheeesus · 15/09/2023 20:06

The cream looks dated already to me.

RedLem0nade · 15/09/2023 20:08

Cream but without handles and with a darker wood floor😊

SpidersAreShitheads · 15/09/2023 20:09

I'm in the middle of putting in two kitchens - one for me, and one for DM. I think I've looked at thousands of these bloody designs 😅

I agree completely with PP re the fact that all kitchens will date eventually. If you pick any kind of colour that's on trend, it will soon be out of fashion.

I think you're always better off just picking the kitchen that you like, unless you're planning on selling immediately!

But to answer your question more specifically...

I think the darker kitchen looks more modern, and I think it seems to have two different colours of cupboards? Darker kitchens are very on-trend now, and so are kitchens with cupboards in different colours. The fact that it's on trend now means it's more likely to look dated in a few years, maybe sooner.

The lighter kitchen has more of a classic look imo. This means it won't ever be bang on trend, but won't look so dated either in a few years.

On a personal level, I prefer the lighter kitchen. But then I tend to prefer classic, country style rustic kitchens - I'm not a fan of very modern looks. I also have an irrational dislike for different colours of cupboards in a kitchen 😅 The handles on the kitchen are easy enough to switch out if you don't like them. Hell would freeze over before I'd get a handleless kitchen - they can be a pain in the arse to open, you get fingerprints everywhere, and I've seen fading on handleless cupboards where they are being constantly touched to open.

Kitchens - and decor in general - really are such a personal thing though. Unless it's something really wild, most colours and styles will split the vote down the middle - as the comments here show!
