Selling house: neighbours trampoline

Hello,

I am in the process of selling my home. We live in quite a 'posh' area and the estate agent fed back that a couple of potential buyers have been put off by the neighbours ugly massive trampoline and goal posts.

You can see the children bouncing as they stare over at us as they can see into the back of our house. I find it annoying myself as its ruined my garden time, why anyone needs one so big I don't know.

There is a 6ft fence but their equipment is higher than that.

Are there any quick fixes to hide it from view? The fence is at the max legal height and I don't want to spend a fortune.

Can’t you put trellis on top of the fence?

Jackydaytona · 07/09/2023 14:42

Trellis and fake foliage

ClematisBlue49 · 07/09/2023 14:59

Maybe plant a few trees and / or bamboo that is already quite tall? If potential buyers can see that the border will cover it fairly soon, than might help.

Trenchfootinthescottishhighlandstoday · 07/09/2023 15:00

Garden sail?

KievLoverTwo · 07/09/2023 15:03

Can your EA tell your potential buyers to remove their heads from up their own arses?

No?

Just me?

.....

I'll get my coat.

They're kids, ffs. If they're eyeballing you, stick your tongue out. They'll soon get bored of it when they see it doesn't bother you.

Trellis and fake foliage

I thought about trellis but there are concrete posts higher than the wooden fence so it would go along nicely unless I pay someone who can cut it or something.

Bamboo is a good idea, but it would need to be quite high. I was worried about it getting out of control but maybe if its smaller and there they will know it will grow.

When buyers are asked for feedback by the estate agent, often it might be ‘just not feeling it’ but instead they need to come up with something specific. I wouldn’t worry about doing anything - some buyers might like the idea of children next door. You can’t please all the people all the time.

CremeEggThief · 07/09/2023 15:20

I don't think any feedback on an issue that is completely out of your control is valid to be completely honest.

LyricalGangsta · 07/09/2023 15:25

@KievLoverTwo

I agree with this. Some people really need to get over themselves.

YouHoooo · 07/09/2023 15:30

Presumably people will still see it all from the upstairs windows?

Seriously. Too posh for kids? Buy a bloody country estate.

Personally I think the EA is bullshitting. I can't imagine anyone being rude enough IRL to say this is the major off-putting point.

As usual, the EA has probably overpriced it.

nevynevster · 07/09/2023 15:40

You can get trellis online cut to size to fit between posts. I have done this and it's not that expensive and easy to fit. I'd do that as it's instant and even if it breaches the regs who cares. The neighbours unlikely to complain and even if they do you may sell the house first !

AuntieJoyce · 07/09/2023 15:42

I didn’t rent a house last year, as when I looked out of the upstairs window there was a trampoline and a let down mini bouncy castle taking over much of next door’s garden. No way

I was very happy to tell the EA as I went round exactly why I wouldn’t be renting it. Of course people are going to give feedback.

And that was just a rental. I wasn’t looking at buying it as a permanent home.

Brumbies · 07/09/2023 15:45

I certainly would be put off were I to see a trampoline over the fence. They're noisy, and imho, very antisocial unless they're hidden away.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 07/09/2023 15:45

Might be a bit too expensive but pleached trees? https://www.hedgesdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Pleached-Trees.html

When we were house hunting we discounted any house that had a trampoline next to “ our “ fence.
I don’t know why posters on here are so surprised by that.

RichieMcAl · 07/09/2023 15:46

It can’t be that posh if you can see next door’s garden.

maximist · 07/09/2023 16:00

I'd discount any house with a large trampoline in the garden - there's one a few houses from me and the noise the kids make on it is horrendous. Why do they need to scream all the time?

LadyCamillaC · 07/09/2023 16:03

@GianinaC if you plant bamboo make sure it's the clumping variety NOT the running one as it will spread and cause problems with your neighbours. We have a problem with our neighbour's bamboo spreading into our garden.

felisha54 · 07/09/2023 16:04

Tbh it would put me off and if I had the luxury id choose another house. Nothing you can do about really. For me it's not seeing the trampoline or nets, it's the noise and screaming that's likely to come from it.

ClematisBlue49 · 07/09/2023 16:04

I have one next door to me currently, and the gardens are small. It's on the list of reasons why I'm moving. There's lots of screaming, not just from the children living there, but also their friends and neighbours. Sometimes I think they are going for the world record for how many children you can fit on a trampoline!

piscofrisco · 07/09/2023 16:06

Pleached trees along your fence. Tallest you can afford. £200 for an 11ft one I think, or thereabouts.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/09/2023 16:07

But since trampolines, (and hot tubs) are movable, you could buy a house and the neighbours buy one the next day.

Similarly it could break the next day.

DrySherry · 07/09/2023 16:24

I like hearing my neighbours kids playing on the trampoline, admittedly we can't actually see them. It's not like they do it all day, an hour or two here and there. Doesn't bother us at all.
On top of that trampoline age hardly lasts forever.

You just haven't had the right people interested yet - and as someone else also suggested - it's probably price if you are not getting any offers. Halifax reported a 1.9% decline for August against July. That's massive. On a posh house (say £800k if your outside London) that's the equivalent of the property loosing 16k in a month ! Frightening really - it seems falls are accelerating which will really start to spook even posh territory buyers...
