Selling house: neighbours trampoline

GianinaC · 07/09/2023 14:41

Hello,

I am in the process of selling my home. We live in quite a 'posh' area and the estate agent fed back that a couple of potential buyers have been put off by the neighbours ugly massive trampoline and goal posts.

You can see the children bouncing as they stare over at us as they can see into the back of our house. I find it annoying myself as its ruined my garden time, why anyone needs one so big I don't know.

There is a 6ft fence but their equipment is higher than that.

Are there any quick fixes to hide it from view? The fence is at the max legal height and I don't want to spend a fortune.

Shit I wish I'd known this when my evil next door neighbours house was on the market and I would taken ours down... unfortunately their house didn't sell 👀

Bamboo is an option but maybe leave it in pots

It can be extremely aggressive depending on which ones you buy

lauraisa · 07/09/2023 17:52

Can't be that posh if your property is so small that you are bothered by the neighbours. Must be pretty small ☹️

You’ve never seen a posh flat, a posh terraced house? Size is not what necessarily makes a property posh.

Just reiterating what other posters have said - be v careful about what bamboo you put in!! [looks sadly at patio that is being ripped apart by bamboo; thanks god this is a rental and idle landlord is the one who will have to do something about it. Spoiler: he won't]

When we were house hunting we discounted any house that had a trampoline next to “ our “ fence.
I don’t know why posters on here are so surprised by that.

@user1486915549
So you could 'safely' buy and within a few months they sell. New owners then get a trampoline for their kids...

Risk vs certainty

I used to have bamboo in pots but they didn't thrive. Apparently they need to continually be repotted and I would need lots of them.

They would need to be a 10 meters to hide the neighbours and to stop it being seen.

I did read today about the clumping variety but some websites suggest they can also be a problem.

I thought perhaps a really fast growing mature tree. But those are quite expensive.

A bamboo can quite easily take over and within years be a total nuisance to get rid of. By then the children will have grown out of the trampoline. It's far less problematic long term than any bamboo.

And I have a bamboo (which I really like).

NashvilleQueen · 07/09/2023 20:02

I can see that fellow gardeners have already pointed out the risk of bamboo :)

Floralnomad · 07/09/2023 20:11

We have clumping bamboo in huge pots but they are just getting bushier rather than higher so I’d be wary of wasting money on them .

gawditswindy · 07/09/2023 20:13

It does amuse me that you think the kids are 'eyeballing' you. The kids do not give a shiny shit that the old lady next door is gardening.

guzzleandstuff · 07/09/2023 20:17

And small terraced houses in some parts of London are not only very posh but upwards of million pounds!

Unicorntastic · 07/09/2023 20:26

Could you not position a large parasol or small gazebo in front of that fence? Not weird given the weather is so hot at the moment.

Can't be that posh if your property is so small that you are bothered by the neighbours. Must be pretty small ☹️

That's daft. As hedges and fences can by law be forced down to 6'6", even the largest garden can end up overlooked by bouncing on a trampoline. And if the houses are on a slope, more so.

You’ve clearly never been to places like St John’s Wood, Maida Vale, Fulham, Chelsea, etc, etc, etc… Confused

OP - I don’t think anything you install to block the trampoline will actually block it. People will still be able to see it through the trellis / trees / bamboo.

And besides, it’s not really the sight of it that’s the issue. It’s the noise that comes from kids playing on it.

I’d be wary of spending money on a ‘solution’ that won’t actually make any difference.

Well when they can see into the house and jump and wave its really annoying.

I do my cooking and look up and all I see on a daily basis is one kid bouncing. Then bang bang as the other kicks their ball as hard as they can aganist my fence.

So yes it pisses me off. Sorry.

Could the neighbours be bribed to pack the trampoline away while you sell? Or are they too well off?

Ilinaya · 07/09/2023 23:42

I'm amazed at how many people would discount a house because of a trampoline! Surely loads of houses have trampolines?! Most families I know have one. We are about to get one, hope our neighbours don't hate us!

HeddaGarbled · 08/09/2023 00:03

Not putting it next to their fence will help. Parents always site trampolines as far away from their own houses as they possibly can.

Philomenacunk1 · 08/09/2023 00:24

Sorry but this would definitely be offputting for me. The types of families who have a huge trampoline taking up most of the garden generally aren’t those with quiet, well-behaved children 🤷‍♀️

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 08/09/2023 00:59

Can you put up one of those things you use to stop ball’s going over the fence up? They are very high, you could weave fake foliage in the net to create a massive screen.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 08/09/2023 03:04

Having suffered the nightmare of shrieking trampoliners for 5-plus years, I'd never ever buy near one again.

Exactly; it's not just the trampoline, it's the mentality.
