Would you buy a house with brown upvc windows?

As the title asks really - would you scroll straight past on Rightmove? Would it put you off buying? House has been renovated inside so not being sold as a doer upper.

I actually don’t mind them and vastly prefer it to the horrid on trend grey that everyone has but I’m interested in whether it would affect others viewing or buying.

Why would it? Colour is only colour and can be changed, although I know the less imaginative can’t see beyond the colour on a wall-their loss

LadybirdStone · 06/09/2023 10:08

I love grey windows. I genuinely don’t like the brown and prefer cheap white. I would be thinking about when I could replace the windows

girlygirly · 06/09/2023 10:08

It certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, once you're inside they would be white wouldn't they?

Why go nuclear and change the whole window when there are excellent upvc paint products out there? (And no I don’t mean that bloody frenchic paint!)

Wouldn't changing the colour involve changing the windows? Quite an expense.

I'd need to see them in context op before commenting. If they're against white/cream rendered walls maybe not. But against brick might work? At least they wouldn't show every speck of dirt the way white ones do!

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/09/2023 10:12

No, you can have UPVC spray painted.

@Heyhoherewegoagain - just seen your second post. I didn't realise you could get upvc paint!

It absolutely does not mean replacing the windows-there are a lot of great upvc paint products now

Why would they be a different colour inside 😂

They're not to my taste OP but it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Eleplant · 06/09/2023 10:14

No but grey would definitely put me off.

unfor · 06/09/2023 10:15

I did (and a brown UPVC door) - I loved every other thing about the house so it was a compromise worth making. Sadly I had to sell the house 5 years later and the windows weren't an issue.

Haha we both cross posted again! There are some painters who are now specialising in it, it’s big business. We HAD to replace our windows (the originals were over 60 years old and held together with paint) and this was one of my considerations when I ordered the dark anthracite windows which I love-they can be changed if I get up one day and suddenly hate them!

Because most are?

Ours are grey outside and white inside. I think most people opt for white inside as it’s more neutral to decorate your room around.

illiterato · 06/09/2023 10:18

It wouldn't be my first choice but in no way would it be a deal breaker. My view of house purchases is that if there are no compromises then I probably cant afford it. Brown windows would be something I'd definitely compromise on if other boxes were ticked.

mibbelucieachwell · 06/09/2023 10:18

I did buy a house with brown windows 4 years ago.

I absolutely hate them. But it didn't stop me buying the house. Mostly I'm delighted with the house. We got the brown French doors and windows at the back replaced but left the ones at the front as they're okay. Despite their hideous colour I'm glad we left them in as they're neater and probably better quality than the new ones at the back.

Famfirst · 06/09/2023 10:19

Can anyone recommend upvc paint?

My windows are brown but in keeping with the house which has lovely brickwork and white would look stupid.

I’m just about to do my kitchen and I’d love to change the brown window frame to white but I don’t want to make a
mess of it 🫣

ApolloandDaphne · 06/09/2023 10:19

I would if they were brown inside also. Our house had windows that were brown wood inside and out. We painted the outside black ( it was only marginally better) and left the inside. Last year, after 10 years of saving we replaced them for windows which are a pale green outside and white inside and they look superb now. I would never buy another house with brown windows again.

ViaRia01 · 06/09/2023 10:20

Solid brown frames or wood-effect?

I quite like the wood effect so that would be fine with me. I suppose it depends on the style of the rest of the house though.

Solid brown colour doesn’t sound very nice so I think I’d only buy if I was able to replace working a reasonable timeframe

LardoBurrows · 06/09/2023 10:21

No, it wouldn't put me off if I liked everything else about the house. If the windows are fairly new and in good nick I'd just get them re-painted.

Ohh, I love the sound of pale green window frames.

No, you can have UPVC spray painted.

You need to do some research

Stormydayagain · 06/09/2023 10:40

I wouldn't overlook it, but I would assume the windows were older as dark brown is generally a dated choice rather than grey, lights oak, pale green, and therefore would be concerned how long they would last and how good the insulation value was, and factor that in to any final decisions/offer.

housethatbuiltme · 06/09/2023 10:52

I LOVE the brown windows, if it wasn't so much extra money for cosmetic change I would rip our ugly white ones out for brown wood effect ones.

I don't understand how the tacky white plastic look became standard.

Give0fecks · 06/09/2023 10:53

Wow didn’t expect so many replies! they are brown inside and out and am considering having them spray painted to improve sale-ability of our house.

sometimes I get so disheartened when I read the threads here about house listings on Rightmove and people are so bloody picky. Some one said previously they wouldn’t even view a house of the drive hadn’t been jet washed! Mental!

I'd not choose brown frames but they do blend in better on some properties so looks fine, equally the popular grey ones can look good or awful against the wrong house colour/style but I'm not a fan I'd like some pretty colour like how they used to paint wooden frames.
uPVC can be painted though and they don't last forever so perhaps will be towards end of lifespan by the next time it's on the market and expected to be upgraded.
