Would you buy a house with brown upvc windows?

As the title asks really - would you scroll straight past on Rightmove? Would it put you off buying? House has been renovated inside so not being sold as a doer upper.

I actually don’t mind them and vastly prefer it to the horrid on trend grey that everyone has but I’m interested in whether it would affect others viewing or buying.

*upvc paint

I actually scrolled past our house on Rightmove for this very reason, did end up viewing and buying the house. The brown ones are actually more expensive and you stop noticing them once you live with them.

There is brown everything in my part of the UK so that would be very in keeping with the style of the whole area and you'd struggle to find a house that doesn't have it. Windows, external and internal doors, skirting board, cupboards, you name it, someone has varnished it dark brown at some point! It's not my cup of tea, but when all the houses look like it the brown does blend in.

Our house has a whole mixture of window colours due to the way it was extended (not by us). White uPVC at the front, dark brown timber downstairs at the back and side and then velux that looks slate grey outside and is nasty brown timber inside. I'd change every window in the house if I could. But none of it put me off buying the house as it is all things that (at a cost and over time) can be changed. I am thinking of sanding down and painting all the timber.

I love the new dark grey style window frames! Different courses for different horses.

Our whole 'estate' has brown upvc windows except 2. When the houses were built in the 80s they had wooden framed windows with leading and it stated in the covenant that the windows had to remain brown. So when everyone updated they went for brown upv with lead.... Except for one family who have moved in since the covenant ended and have put in white... It looks awful! They have mock tudor beams and daft white windows... The other house which doesn't have brown upvc still has the original wooden windows which they have re-stained every couple of years.

PickAChew · 06/09/2023 14:14

My problem with the diamond pattern is that it's often a sign that the windows are pretty old and might need more than the panes replacing.

Famfirst · 06/09/2023 14:20

Brilliant thanks so much. It’s just the inside of the kitchen window that I want to
do. White windows are awful with the brickwork on our street as one of my neighbours found out too late unfortunately, their words, not me being catty I promise 🥴😄

Why would it? Colour is only colour and can be changed, although I know the less imaginative can’t see beyond the colour on a wall-their loss

Repainting all the window frames inside and out in an entire house is going to be a bit more expensive and a lot more faff than a coat of paint on a wall.

Precipice · 06/09/2023 14:23

Why ever not? They look much better and in the style of wooden windows. Grey is grim as hell and white looks cheap.

MidnightMeltdown · 06/09/2023 14:24

I don't like any dark coloured windows - brown and grey are both ugly imo, but grey is worse than brown. Definitely don't paint them grey!

If I loved everything else about the house I'd just buy it and change the windows.

shivawn · 06/09/2023 14:25

No big deal. Ours were brown when we moved in, I painted them about 3 years ago with Rustoleum All Surface paint, they were a bit of a pain in the ass to paint but they still look perfect today.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 06/09/2023 14:28

I hate our brown windows but it didn't put us off buying the house.
They're brown inside and out but we can't have them sprayed as they have a brown Georgian bar effect in them 😑.

They had them done like that on the extension to match the larger wooden windows - we have an Edwardian photo of the house and the originals were white and looked much better. We want them all white again but can't afford to replace the brown pvc ones.

LadybirdStone · 06/09/2023 14:35

Oh I would definitely paint them first if that was an option, I wasn’t aware it was possible. But seeing as I’m not moving or buying one I don’t need to know these things!

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/09/2023 14:35

I loathe them, so would only buy the house if I could afford to replace with white.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 06/09/2023 14:37

And that’s entirely a person’s choice to make-we all have thresholds of what we’re prepared to do

Thinkbiglittleone · 06/09/2023 14:38

I love brown windows but only on the outside I wouldn't have them on the inside. I can't stand grey, but it's all about personal choice.

Someone might love them or they love the house and loathe the windows but they will offer accordingly. I don't think it will put off a high proportion of people, so don't spend money to change them, someone who buys will sort that to their taste.

SocialLite · 06/09/2023 14:39

Mine are brown, looks much better on a house surrounded by trees, white would look awful.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/09/2023 14:41

Depends on the style of the house.

Ours has brown wood effect windows to replace the original stained wood. It looks much better than the neighbour who put white in but it would look odd on a different style of house.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 06/09/2023 14:43

As long as I had the budget to replace them with wooden windows in the original style. The colour would irrelevant really.

I’m seriously considering an 80s house with brown pvc windows and even those criss cross bits to the front 😆
they are white inside which is key for me.
and it’s in keeping with the style of the house and the cul de sac so it would look weird to change it.
doesn’t really put my off as has loads of things going for it in terms of layout, garden, location etc.

This is exactly what we have!

The houses in our cul-de-sac usually sell quickly when they go on the market, so no-one appears to be put off by the brown windows!

ActDottie · 06/09/2023 14:50

If it was top of budget yes because I’d want them all replaced but of the price was right it wouldn’t bother me.

Gettingbysomehow · 06/09/2023 14:52

My last house had brown double glazing as it was in the deeds that every house in that area had to have them - no white allowed. Most people got brown double glazing with white on the inside so the house wasn't too dark but I easily managed to sell my house so it didn't seem to be a problem.

anon2022anon · 06/09/2023 15:01

I would buy, but you say the rest of the house is renovated? I wouldn't pay a renovated premium. And to be honest, it might make me look closely at the renovation (if you mean renovated rather than nicely decorated) as in the grand scheme of a renovation, windows should definitely be factored in so it doesn't affect stuff in the future, i.e. needing to re skim certain areas after fitting, and just changing like for like, standard uPVC is not a big % of a renovation cost. So I might assume the works had been done on the cheap.

1stTimeMummy2021 · 06/09/2023 15:52

I recently viewed a house with this and it didn't put me off but I did look into having the colour changed by a local company that does that. It wouldn't have been something I did on day 1 but at some point, as I see the brown as old fashioned. I grew up in brown/beige/orange hell so it probably taints my view a little.

CallistaFlockfart · 06/09/2023 17:27

I hate brown UPVC windows so I would only buy if I had the budget to change them.

GKD · 06/09/2023 18:16

We bought a house with brown UPVC, door and porch framing last year when market was still nuts.

I wasn’t going to view, front looks shit. RM pics in general were awful and did house a disservice but DH booked before discussion (mad market) so I visited for the shits and giggles.

We loved the space, potential in the house, suited our needs, great and unique location (stating reason would be outing, but we get folk stopping to take pics!)

Windows and drive look like shite, we plan to spray when we have some ££ but it’s far down the list of things to sort and I’m on mat leave soon.

In our view, you can extend, change windows etc but you cannot change location.
