Renaming a terrible house name

Just a bit of a silly one as it may come to nothing, but we've seen a house we like....that's currently aesthetically awful but tonnes of potential.

It's large, detached 3000sqft. Stands in an acre. 16th C but been extended and extended. The outside is covered in mock Tudor beams, painted chocolate brown with a yellow background. We'd take off all the mock diamond lead stuck on the windows, and paint it nicely! It's a big imposing lump, and I like that.

The owners have named it (very similar to) Lance Lodge. It's not a lodge. And Lance is bloody awful.

We'd rename it 'Something' House.

What would you replace 'Something' with? What sounds like a nice, strong, impressive, clean, welcoming name?

I don't like the usual suspects...Crown House. White House. (Although we'd probably paint it mainly white TBF.) Oak House. All are a bit uninspired, one in every village.

I quite like Alexander House, but DH thinks it's just odd to pick a random name, I just think it flows.

Looking for hive mind inspiration!

(I've been looking on Rightmove at house names, there's genuinely one for sale called Chez Wedrewolf. Yes really. And no, I don't like Wedrewolf House Grin)

Pax House.
My husband wanted to call our house "Feckham Hall".

“What can be seen is a tonne of fields…” = Fieldton House, Acre House, Fieldsmore House, Fieldvue or Fieldview House.

I was buying a 'Bevron' and we found out that the original 16th Century name was Miss Wyatt's Cottage which I thought was lovely- we were going to change the name back to that.

What's in the garden? Can you name it for that? Wisteria House, Ash House etc?

AvocadotoastORahouse · 31/08/2023 19:42

the old part of the house was originally something to do with the Christian church, mainly a Scottish branch....

Thistle House
Celtic House
Kirkfield House (Kirk is used a lot for church)
Knox House (John Knox)

Or
WeeFrees House (IYKYK) Grin

Graves. Graves are in the garden. Like long gone, from 1600s, and just a few stones left, which can be moved (long story but an eccentric man who used to live there like 60yrs ago, had a bit of a crazed episode and flung the around the garden) on the basis that they no longer relate to being where the actual person once was.

So I quite like Legerstow House as pp suggested, old English for graveyard.

You do need to check with the local council as many have rules about what houses can be called, especially if there is a house with the same name locally.

It's really very straightforward, and as I said, I don't like the "every village has one" names.

How about Conquest House

AnjGlos · 03/09/2023 13:50

Hey! This is an odd one, but we're looking to give our new home a name and thought I'd come to you guys for advice!
We're near countryside, in an old mill town, but it's a very small new build, detached (barely).
I like Brambling, but is that difficult for some to say/spell? It's not very common.
Also love Wren...thought maybe Wrenwood, all one word. Willow something??

If anyone has any thoughts, plz let me know!
I love nature, so taking some inspiration from that would be great!
Thank you!

Is it in a row of numbered houses?

OP posts:

Yes, it's a detached new build, then there are 3 smaller houses attached to one another. All of the detached homes on the other side of the road are named.

AnjGlos · 03/09/2023 21:07

Thank you, I do like Wildwood!
