Renaming a terrible house name

Just a bit of a silly one as it may come to nothing, but we've seen a house we like....that's currently aesthetically awful but tonnes of potential.

It's large, detached 3000sqft. Stands in an acre. 16th C but been extended and extended. The outside is covered in mock Tudor beams, painted chocolate brown with a yellow background. We'd take off all the mock diamond lead stuck on the windows, and paint it nicely! It's a big imposing lump, and I like that.

The owners have named it (very similar to) Lance Lodge. It's not a lodge. And Lance is bloody awful.

We'd rename it 'Something' House.

What would you replace 'Something' with? What sounds like a nice, strong, impressive, clean, welcoming name?

I don't like the usual suspects...Crown House. White House. (Although we'd probably paint it mainly white TBF.) Oak House. All are a bit uninspired, one in every village.

I quite like Alexander House, but DH thinks it's just odd to pick a random name, I just think it flows.

Looking for hive mind inspiration!

(I've been looking on Rightmove at house names, there's genuinely one for sale called Chez Wedrewolf. Yes really. And no, I don't like Wedrewolf House Grin)

What are the townlands, we re naming ours after townlands we are from.
In our case house suffixing didn't work so we've just gone for Brighton instead of Brighton house for example

Why name it? Presumably it has a number?

I drove along a perfectly normal road yesterday (the Cotswolds, doncha know) where none of the houses had a number, just names. I felt for any delivery person or postie.

Plenty of rural or semi-rural houses have names - they will never have been numbered. The posties etc are, mostly, aware of them all.

When I moved here from London, I found it really odd, but have got used to it now. Another handy tool is What Three Words. Not all companies use this, but it’s handy knowing what mine are if needing to give a direct grid reference.

Hate house names. Just name it it's number!

Bit difficult when your house has had a name for almost 300 years! Lots of rural houses have names rather than numbers.

Furries · 20/08/2023 03:05

I’m ok with my house name, it’s been in use for over 109 years - and I was also able to find out it’s previous name thanks to the previous owners family.

So, I’ve got no desire to change it but, if I was in the mood, I’d maybe go for calling it My House!

My House
X Road
Y County

Hopefully I’d then always find my way home as “take me to My House” should work with a cab etc!

TyrannasaurusJex · 20/08/2023 03:28

Mojo Dojo Casa House.

Our house had a shit, twee name that had no link whatsoever to the actual house. I find house names very pretentious. We changed it back to the number. I’ve worked in the emergency services a long time and house names are an absolute nightmare. Get a number so an ambulance can quickly find your house.

You're not allowed to change named houses to numbers. I looked into it for mine. Plus it wouldn't help anyway when all the rest of the road have names.

garlictwist · 20/08/2023 07:05

Alexander House sounds like the name of a prep school to me.

I agree with looking into its history or naming after local trees or natural landmarks.

A house near me is called "Tip view" because it's opposite the recycling plant. They've made a beautiful cursive sign and everything Grin

eurochick · 20/08/2023 08:02

There's a hotel in Surrey or Sussex called Alexander House.

Surely there must be a historical name for such an old house. Revert to that.

greenmarsupial · 20/08/2023 08:22

Foxglove House and then plant some.

I saw a house called September House recently and thought that was a nice name. You could use a month that is meaningful to you.

It doesn't have a number. Closest neighbour probably 1/2 mile as the crow flies. It's on its own in the middle of fields.

You are, because I did it.
It does help when there’s a clear sign on a gatepost or wall with numbers. The number indicates how far along the road the house is. So if the house is number 5 then I know it’s at the start of the road etc

Oulu · 20/08/2023 08:30

Moneypit Manor?

ChristmasCrumpet · 20/08/2023 08:31

It's not listed

Moneypit Manor?

More than likely!

I wish it was a manor, bit it's not. It's also not a cottage, lodge, chalet. It's definitely a house, so will be something house.

I like a lot of the derivatives of Fox, and a couple of others. I would prefer it was something related to the house but it's more important that I love the sound of the name, then as a secondary measure, if it's related to the house, bonus.

That's why it needs to be something that's not Holly House, or Laburnum House...as people would see none of the above and wonder why. Where as Foxton House, there isn't a Foxton to look for.

If it's 16th century, hasn't it got genuine Tudor beams?

That's what I was thinking

A month of the year is a possibility. Thank you, I wouldn't have thought of that.

I'd feel like a right nob telling someone where to send my parcels:
