Parking/Could a car fit through this gap?

I'm having driving lessons atm so my judgement isn't yet the best.

Do you think it would be possible to squeeze a car in through that tiny gap and create a driveway?

The curb isn't dropped and the house is right inside a corner, the neighbours attached next door have the curb dropped... I don't know much about if it would also be approved or not based on that.

Would you remove the gate?

Seeline · 08/08/2023 22:08

The existing gap - no

Open up the frontage by removing the hedge - yes you could get a car through

Ohmylovejune · 08/08/2023 22:10

Not really

I have a tiny 2 seater which might if gate and that little gatepost was removed, but then again my car is so low I'd not drive it up over a kerb, so it wouldn't get as far as the gate to try.

TheShellBeach · 08/08/2023 22:11

Only if you removed the gate.
Don't do anything until you know if it's possible to get the kerb dropped.

LIZS · 08/08/2023 22:11

You'd have to remove all the frontage and it might be tight opening doors, if doable. However if you are near the bend you may not be given permission for a dropped curb or access over the footpath. Even if you were there may be a condition that you emerge forwards ie. Have to reverse in.

VinEtFromage · 08/08/2023 22:14

As most others have said, IF you can permission for a dropped kerb and remove the gate & some hedge.

bestofme · 08/08/2023 22:19

The gap where the gate is? Definitely not. You would have to remove most of the lower section of hedge.

It looks like you are on a bend. Together with the height of the thicker/ taller hedge, this is going to cause problems when you drive/ reverse out. The taller hedge is going to restrict your visibility.

Who owns the hedge? If it's yours, I'd look at removing it and erecting a shorter fence. Although I would expect your neighbour to kick off if you did. If it's not your hedge you're going to have a lot of near misses with pedestrians and cars.

Nellieinthebarn · 08/08/2023 22:21

Mine probably would, but it's a fiat panda and I'm quite good at backwards parking. DH's car would not, it's a Toyota Hilux, he isn't very bad at parking, but has lost a wing mirror.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/08/2023 22:28

If you can take out everything from the wall, to the white box, then yes, I think so.

seven201 · 08/08/2023 22:35

If you remove that bit of hedge it looks like it. But I think getting permission for a dropped curb on a corner could be tricky nowadays. I'd check with your council highways department before putting an offer in.

CheersToMe · 08/08/2023 22:47

It may not be possible or will be prohibitively expensive because there is a manhole cover on the doorway and a drainage gulley where the crossing would go.

Sorry.

PS you may want to get the map deleted as it gives away your address.

CheersToMe · 08/08/2023 22:48

*doorway not doorway!

CheersToMe · 08/08/2023 22:48

OMG autocorrect!!! Footway

caerdydd12 · 08/08/2023 22:50

If that's a manhole cover I think it would be a non starter, I don't think you'd get council approval considering the drainage below.

KittensAllOverTheCarpetAndSofa · 08/08/2023 22:50

I think the manhole cover will scupper the pp

CheersToMe · 08/08/2023 22:52

Another option may to investigate the possibility of creating access from the road at the rear into your back garden.

Cotswoldbee · 09/08/2023 08:47

There is a lot going on in that part of the verge/footpath so a dropped kerb may not be approved.
Apart from it being on a corner, there is the lamp-post, drain, manhole cover and a (VM?) cabinet.
Check with the council first and see what they say as anything else at this point is idle speculation.

As a PP said, ask for this thread to be taken down or modified as the location is immediately traceable, was the first road that came up when I went onto Google Maps.

Obeythedancecommander · 09/08/2023 12:11

Thanks everyone for your feedback! It's not my house, just a house for sale but the lack of parking is an issue so that's why I was asking.

Yes to this. Removing that small post and the hedge to the left of the grey box should be fairly straightforward. As to whether it’s a good idea given the lack of dropped kerb and corner location, that’s a different matter.

Lonelycrab · 09/08/2023 12:36

Although having found the property in question on Rightmove, you do realise it already has off street parking to the rear, there’s a garage in the back garden with decent access. . Can’t see why you’d bother to open up the front when it’s already got an easy parking situation.

Good property for the money if you’re prepared to do the work imo.

sleepyscientist · 09/08/2023 12:40

You could reverse a tank into there! When you view take a tape measure and measure the width then have a look at your cars width, I would say as long as I have 15-20cm either side I can get it in then you have plenty of space to position.

tictactoe1234 · 09/08/2023 12:53

Tape measure

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 09/08/2023 12:53

If itson a blind bend you will not get permission to drop the kerb

So it does! A massive back garden with parking for about 5 cars and a garage.

Lonelycrab · 09/08/2023 13:39

Looking at it again it’s not really a garage though. Large shed more like. But it does have access, dropped kerb and lots of space at the back in general. And a bloody nightmare of conifer hedging that’s way out of control but that’s another matterGrin
