Dulux Timeless looks yellow in my house.

Hi everyone.

I live in a new build which currently has magnolia walls and we haven't painted it in 10 years.

We have finally got round to decorating and I want to redo the whole house in a warm white colour. The ceilings and woodwork will be in brilliant white.

After reading reviews on here I was convinced that the colour I wanted was Dulux Timeless but when I've tried it on the walls in my house (in several different rooms) it looks cream and has a slight yellow undertone to it.

Because I've been looking at magnolia for the past 10 years I want to get away from anything yellow looking. I also don't want anything grey looking.

Can anyone recommend a nice crisp white that has a warm undertone to it without it looking yellow or grey?

Thanks in advance.

Sail white by crown is nice

CiderJolly · 04/08/2023 07:05

what sort of bulbs have you got? If they’re warm white they will often make white walls look yellow.

TheGreenSketch · 04/08/2023 07:10

I second Sail White, I’ve used it in two homes. An ace colour, no yellow tones at all.

I've got sail white in 4 rooms and the only room it looks slightly creamy is one which gets a lot of direct sunlight. The other rooms definitely look an off white . I think it definitely depends on the light in the room .

dulux white cotton is a warm white - i also have timeless in some rooms and the white cotton is definitely 'whiter' but still not stark

honeyandfizz · 04/08/2023 07:16

Little Greene slaked lime is a lovely warm
Shade of white.

When I tried the Timeless it was definitely very yellow. We went for Dulux Jasmine White which has just the right amount of 'off-white' to it! PP is right though, the lighting makes a difference as well.

Thanks everyone.

I forgot to mention that it's got to be a Dulux paint as that's the only paint I will be able to get hold of at such short notice (I'm going to start painting at tonight).

Don't get the love for Timeless on MN.
It looks dull/yellowy/grubby so often.

CatsOnTheChair · 04/08/2023 07:41

What undertones do you want?
You've ruled out yellow and grey.
So, Blue? Green? Pink? Or by not yellow, do you want cream (which id describe as having pale yellow undertones)
Once you know that, you can get closer to a paint colour.

YellowJoggers · 04/08/2023 07:47

Dulux Rock Salt is whiter than Timeless.

RoyKentFanclub · 04/08/2023 07:56

Timeless looks yellow because it is. It has an extremely yellow base and any degree of sunlight will make it read yellow.

Mavan1984 · 04/08/2023 08:02

I just want a warm undertone to the white. Nothing yellow or grey though.

I have different lighting in different rooms so it's got to be a white that looks good in all light.

If it has to be Dulux off the shelf there are seven shades of white paler than Timeless. Sounds like you need one of the top row.

Dulux Timeless looks yellow in my house.

Can I ask why you aren't just doing everything brilliant white including the walls? You can keep it warm with warm bulbs. That's what I have.

Bonelly · 04/08/2023 08:13

Best way is to buy testers and paint on plain white a4 and move the paper around the rooms to see how the light hits it. Also if you know what direction your room faces you can look up what that does to colour.

Skyellaskerry · 04/08/2023 08:14

Like @worriedatwork123 I’ve used Dulux white cotton. I wanted white but not pure brilliant, and no grey/blue cool tone. It’s definitely white and I was pleased with the result.

Skyellaskerry · 04/08/2023 08:18

@honeyandfizz slaked lime had a grey tone for me, so dependent on the light I guess like all paints.

Spendonsend · 04/08/2023 08:22

I think all the dulux whites have a yellow undertone, there are a couple that are greyish though.

Utini · 04/08/2023 08:56

We have Dulux White Cotton in the kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom. Like @Skyellaskerry I'd say it's a very neutral white, softer than pure brilliant white but without any grey or yellow undertones.

NewYearIdea · 04/08/2023 09:03

Have a look at Dulux Porcelain Doll - it's not grey, more chalky

JobMatch3000 · 04/08/2023 09:06

Another vote for Jasmine White. I've used it in two homes now.

Talipesmum · 04/08/2023 09:07

We went for Dulux Heritage Ash White. Specific criteria for me was I didn’t want a creamy yellowy undertone, but also didn’t want grey walls. Ash white is kind of stoney, chalky. It’s really nice and soft. I worried it would be a bit dark but it isn’t at all.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/08/2023 09:08

This is interesting. We have a lot big Timeless, but our house is not very sunny. The rooms that are sunny are much stronger colours, by luck rather than design.

PragmaticWench · 04/08/2023 09:53

I've used Nutmeg White and it's a warm but not yellow neutral that works really well with white.
