Do you have herringbone LVT?

Just wondering how long people have had it for, mainly to check if it’s a thing that will go out of fashion or if it’s been around long enough to presume it’ll last the rest of time? I have avoided a coloured kitchen (blue and now seemingly green etc) as I know I’ll change my mind when it’s no longer ‘in’, just like I hate my grey walls now!

So, how long have you had your herringbone flooring and do you still love it?

I think it’s very 2022. Neighbour chose hers last year before moving in (new build) and is already regretting it. But if you love it then go for it, these things come and go anyway.

OhDN · 22/07/2023 10:01

Thank you!

Anyone other views? Would be interested to hear as wide a range of opinions as possible before I make my final choice.

Yes we had it put in last year and love it - no regrets. Rest of the kitchen is neutral

WalterWitty · 22/07/2023 10:05

Navy kitchen and herringbone here - love it still

CupEmpty · 22/07/2023 10:06

Depends on what style you get IMO. Herringbone as a concept is classic and has been around for centuries. But the long plank LVT done in this style is completely out of proportion and makes it look modern, and therefore likely to date. Also the chevron pattern 🤢

I’m putting down new flooring in our downstairs, and it won’t be herringbone.

User6424678852 · 22/07/2023 10:09

And my apologies, I just reread my post and it sounds really bitchy, and not how I meant it.

What I meant was simply to go for what you love. If you are buying it because it is/was a trend then yes that trend is nearly over. But if you are buying it because you love it then you will still love it anyway. It’s a classic style and will come and go over many more cycles over the years.

ParisP · 22/07/2023 10:19

I love it

KievLoverTwo · 22/07/2023 10:25

Depends on the type, I think. If you get gorgeous rich wood colours, it looks great and is a classic that I don’t think has aged badly. The washed out grey type is definitely a fad and makes me lose the will to live.

"very 2022" oh my word 😂

Tulipblank · 22/07/2023 10:34

I really like the look of it, but we decided against herringbone when we had a kitchen extension last year. Primarily because I thought it might date, but also because we have original 1950s parquet in our lounge and there's no way the lvt could compete.

DesparatePragmatist · 22/07/2023 10:42

Normal size herringbone, basket weave etc are classic parquet and look great.

The big plank ones will go the way of crushed velvet sofas I fear

Is a floor “dating” a bad thing? Is there something inherently negative about other people being able to guess “ah, this floor was probably fitted sometime between 2021-2023, when this particular style was very fashionable”? Yes, I think people will be able to do that with herringbone in a few years, but I don’t personally see that as a problem.

Usually I say that if you like something then go for it; but as you’re somebody whose tastes and liking of your own decor seem to be at least partially driven by trends and other people’s opinions then tbh I would probably avoid it. Choose a classic pattern like block or basket weave, or a cheaper material which you won’t mind replacing in a couple of years.

Accountdetailss · 22/07/2023 14:48

But does it matter if it’s no longer ‘in’?
If you like it, have it! It’s your home.

OhDN · 22/07/2023 15:06

Thanks all. Yes, I’ve explained that I know I’m ‘daddy’ and will go off something after a while if something ‘better’ or newer or ‘in’ comes along. I’m very fickle and admit it! 😂 For that reason I’ve avoided the blue/green kitchen and have gone for something more neutral. Some people have said ‘what does it matter?’ I certainly don’t care what others think, but care if I’m going to go off it like I have the grey walls in a few years.

Having said that.m, the LVT we’ve chosen is a classic wood look with little variation, so not the striped look or the greyish colours so for that reason I’m hoping I’ll still like it. Food for thought. Thank you all!

We have herringbone but engineered wood all through downstairs. It’s classic looking, I have no concerns about it dating! I agree the greyish tones won’t age well, but oak is timeless. (Ignore the pug being a twat 😆)

Do you have herringbone LVT?
EuniceNewtonFoote · 22/07/2023 16:57

Oh I love that floor @SquashPenguin - and the twatty pug!

Where's the floor from and has it marked?

UncleRadley · 22/07/2023 17:02

What's the difference between herringbone and chevron pattern? Thinking of getting it in the living room...

YukoandHiro · 22/07/2023 17:02

We just got herringbone and it looks amazing to me - but you do need to get real wood or it looks rubbish as there isn't enough variation in colour and texture.

khakitrousers · 22/07/2023 17:02

We're going for herringbone LVT - not actually decided which one yet, but definitely one that looks more like a classic wood colour.

We're also going for a dark blue kitchen - I've been worried about it dating as well, but I do really like the look. We're going to get wooden doors so we can repaint if we go off it in a few years.

It’ll look fantastic! I would have loved to go navy (and very nearly did) but I just know what I’m like, so have gone for a neutral colour for the units (Farrow and Ball drop cloth to be precise). I love blue and also green at the mo so am having a green velvet high backed bench made to go against the wall for the back of our dining table and a blue neon sign above it to satisfy those cravings! 😂

I’m getting herringbone LVT in a wood grain, I don’t think it’ll date at all, it’s classic?!

Cathotels · 22/07/2023 22:38

I’ve got a blue kitchen and herringbone LVT when I put them in I said everyone will know this was done in 2021/2022 but I don’t care, I love it and I still do. Yes it is of it’s time but I’ll paint the kitchen when the time comes I’m bored with it and I can’t imagine ever not loving the floor
