To keep these built in wardrobes or not?

Hello,

We recently purchased a very dated house and are in process of decorating the whole house and need to be sensible about how we spend our money. My husband wants to keep these ugly wardrobes as there is nothing wrong with them apart from I think they are ugly! and just paint them and replace the door knobs on them but I still think they will look ugly when painted . What would you do? Get rid or try and revamp them ? We would probably paint them in same colour as the walls so that they blend in. Colour will be in green.

They look really good and they’re probably better quality of materials than many you can get now. Can you hear my regret of the wardrobes we got rid of!

They're nice. Keep and paint. Don't borrow trouble; if they function and just need a cosmetic facelift, why rip them out?

No, sorry, I didnt' realize there was an update! They look fabulous!

Nice job - they look great! What a transformation and only £70.

I love natural wood. If anyone 'upcycled' my extremely expensive quality wooden furniture they'd be lucky to walk away with their lives

smooththecat · 10/08/2023 01:27

Looks great! Are the knobs black? That small detail also makes a huge difference.

smooththecat · 10/08/2023 01:28

I wouldn’t call it up cycling as these were very modern already. I like natural wood too, but the orange pine look not so much.

Nanalisa60 · 10/08/2023 08:29

They look great , well done you have saved a fortune

blarm · 10/08/2023 08:39

They look great!

RoseMartha · 10/08/2023 08:49

They look amazing. You wouldn't know they were the same doors.

Loveflatwhite · 10/08/2023 08:52

@smooththecat yes door knobs are black

@1vandal2 I love natural wood furniture too but problem with the wardrobes is the orange pine is too orange and too dark and clashes with our oak bed frame and side tables. It’s a north facing room too so needed to be brighter.

They look amazing! Are they grey or green? 😍

Although we do want to be sensible with money I always think it’s best to get it right the first time so you don’t waste money doing it again. The bedroom paint we are looking at is little Greene so it’s not super cheap and then it’s all the effort sanding and priming .

My worry is I’ll spend money and time on it and still hate it and will need to spend more money getting new ones ! First world problems 😂

But it seems that everyone on here think it’ll look nice so I’m going to give it a whirl and hope for the best . Mumsnetters has never failed me yet 😬

will keep you all updated xx

You dont need to sand much or at all. Some really good primer to slap on and you paint away.

Notyetthere · 10/08/2023 10:45

I didnt realise this was an update. The transformation looks great.

FiveShelties · 10/08/2023 10:49

Wow, the look fantastic.

SpidersAreShitheads · 10/08/2023 18:16

Wow OP!!!

The transformation is incredible - I absolute love those wardrobes now they're painted!!! And I think PP are right, changing the doorknobs has made a big difference too.

Great job.

I'm hot headed and probably would have ploughed in with a sledgehammer without even thinking 😅 We're in the middle of a big renovation job and you've given me pause for thought about some ugly cupboards I was going to rip out and replace.........

smooththecat · 10/08/2023 23:14

Yeah, actual fitted wardrobes/storage are eye watering to replace at the moment. Worth saving if poss.

Furries · 11/08/2023 00:19

For those liking the updates, it’s definitely worth considering for the future.

My kitchen is now around 15 year’s old - was put in by the previous owners. If you don’t NEED to redesign/extend your kitchen, it’s really worth considering painting your current units.

I repainted the units around 8 years ago, changed the worktop and got a new sink.

2 years ago, I repainted the units again as just fancied a change. I use Little Greene primer and oil-based topcoat. It’s not cheap paint, but still got a new look to the kitchen for around £140. I keep my wall colour neutral so that it can handle any shade I fancy for the units.

Yes, it’s a bit of a faff, but it’s quite satisfying to see the results of your work and enjoy a new look for not too much expense.

Have kept my handles in the kitchen as they suit the property and most paint colours, but agree with others that a simple change of handles/knobs can make a difference - have done that on chests of drawers that I’ve repainted.

Lookingatthesunset · 11/08/2023 00:28

Def keep and paint! You could get a company in to spray them, and change the handles. They would be transformed, and save you money to spend on the rest of the house!

Lookingatthesunset · 11/08/2023 00:29

OMG didn't realise you had done it - they look great!

Loveflatwhite · 11/08/2023 10:18

@Popcornshovel yeah it’s Green. Colour is called book room green by little Greene!

They are much nicer than the flat modern look you’re suggesting.
