Hello All,

Apologies, I am completely a crap in interiors and have no knowledge about it. Please advise if I can paint these kitchen cupboards. Also I would want to get my entire house painted, which is around 900 sq ft, how much should it cost out of your experience.

Appreciate your help.

If you can peel them or sand them you can buy you need to check in on you tube how to go it. Kitchen cupboard paint is available

QueefofSheena · 08/07/2023 19:14

Frenchic Al Fresco. You can remove the existing surface by heating with a hairdryer and peeling, or you can sand and sugar soap them. 3 thin coats, 2 hours apart. Then be careful until the paint has cured (about 3 weeks) or use a finishing coat. There is a Frenchic forum on Facebook with loads of examples of painted kitchens.

Thanks a lot for your advise. I am relieved this can be painted, the cupboards are in excellent condition but I hate the colour.

Do check out the Frenchic forum, there are loads of colours. I’ve just done UPVC front door on FIL’s house that we are selling. Made a massive difference

I have ready in one of our local area forums, that someone is charging £120 per day for painting. If I calculate this would be around 41 working days for painting. I guess the painting of the house should not take more than a week.

If we take 5K as you have been quoted, it would be around 40 plus days for painting, I guess this is an extremely high quote just for paint. I am too new to this and could be wrong.

£120 is a very good price. I’m in London but agree that £5k is a lot of money

Loveflatwhite · 09/07/2023 01:16

when you said entire house do you mean the woodwork as well.

the 5k quote does include all the woodwork and includes all the paint as well. architrave, skirting, coving , staircase (includes sanding) , banister , wooden window sill

I find checkatrade quite useful for rough estimates. According to this , painters and decorators are charging between £250-£400 per day. So £120 is very very cheap. If everyone else in your area is twice as much just be cautious and wary and do your research. I’m speaking from a bad experience and it ended up costing alot of money to put right.

You might find that the cupboards would look completely different if you just changed the handles - maybe to contemporary shaped black handles? I changed mine recently and was surprised by just how much of a difference it made. But if you hate them that much, my friend has just painted quite similar cupboard doors in navy Frenchic paint and they look really good

Yes I hate the brown colour, planning to change the colour to mint green and colour the handles copper colour.

Yes because the £120 is someone with 2 years of experience. Would you know how long could the painting of the entire house take?

It's the prep work for a house painting project that takes most of the time. Cleaning, sanding, filling, cutting in. The rollering & painting is fairly easy once this has been done. Anyone can do a quick tosh job & roller over spiders webs etc & hardly prep or cut in properly. £120 per day for a painter is a bargain! Your cupboards can be painted, yes but the results can be iffy & start chipping after time but you could find the French chic & peeling works. I changed my cupboard doors, ordered via an online company. Measured them loads of times to ensure I got the right sizes. Some companies will measure & change them for you but it's more expensive.

Loveflatwhite · 09/07/2023 11:03

It’s really hard to say how long it will take ? Are you painting skirting/ architrave / coving /doors as well? How tall are your ceilings. Best thing to do is get 3 quotes to compare .

Loveflatwhite · 09/07/2023 11:08

Also are they prepping the walls? filling in holes and cracks and sanding uneven walls? This will take longer and cost more but will give you best finish

Loveflatwhite · 09/07/2023 11:08

Your walls may not need sanding or filling ?

Sure, will try and see if I could find cheap doors which I could change.

If you don’t do much painting, kitchen cupboards is not where I would start. It’s a difficult surface, and the preparation and paint are quite specialised.

Rather than replacing the doors ( that’s a decent size kitchen) you can get the doors resprayed in situ which is cheaper and less hassle. A re spray company will use proper paint which shouldn’t chip and will give a resilient surface.

When we’ve had rooms redecorated recently it’s taken 1 person about a week per room. This was for a thorough job included filling cracks and prepping, sanding and painting all woodwork and then the walls. We paid £200 per day, so £1000 per room. This is SE England. Just make sure the person quoting £120 per day is experienced, insured and has reviews. You get what you pay for.

In our old house we had all the kitchen cabinets professionally sprayed to change the colour. Took about 3 days and cost £2500 (about 3/4 years ago).
