Our Bosch classix 6 model now has burnt out motor after 17 years of service.. have started to look for a new machine....I did read a little about some models and a lot of comments were about very long wash cycles, I dont want all that, the bosch did a good wash in about one hour ... so looking for something similar....thanks.

Watching with interest as we’re also in the market for one too. We inherited our washing machine and all but one of the cycles are three hours long, it’s ridiculous.

TheSnailAndTheWaaaail · 27/06/2023 10:51

I have a 2 year old Bosch serie 4 (I think) and I wash everything on a mixed cycle, both 30 and 40 degrees are under 1 hour and 60 degrees is 1 hour 17. The cotton cycles are like 3 hours long so I've never used them!

I recently bought an Indesit 91495 as my old Hotpoint was failing. It has lots of short cycles (cotton 60 deg is 50 minutes) and it washes very nicely. It was the only one I found that gave you that option. It does have a Eco wash cycle if you want that one...

3 hours?! - am not the most domessticated person but didn't realise such things existed. Most of mine I think 1.5 to 2 hours apart dfrom some express options. In truth doesn't bother me - bit of a luddite on washing, mistrust general progs that seem too fast.

The eco cycles are usually long but use less water and electricity than the shorter cycles. Machines always have a quicker option though, it'll just cost more per wash.

Deepintheheartofbooks · 27/06/2023 11:36

@earsup I have a 9kg Beko 1600 spin, the 40 degree cotton cycle which I use for pretty much everything has a reduce time function that you can press twice, so it starts at 2.32 reduce to 1.34 the reduce again to 1.19.

Please ignore the following if you don't want to get bogged down in cycles and yes I have a life. There is a drain and spin cycle you can run for a 1600 spin (and other options but the 1600 ) takes 22 minutes. The reason I am adding that is because there is an advertised 28 minute quick wash. The default setting is 30 degree and 600 spin but it does offer different temps 90/60/40/30/20/cold and different spin options 1200/800/600/rinse hold (where it sits in the water ie if you do it overnight it doesn't crease the clothes) and a no spin option. Depending on the combinations of temp and spin this alters the time ie 40 degree 1200 spin on this setting is 38 minutes but rinse hold will reduce this to 30 minutes and you can then use the 1600 drain and spin.

Deepintheheartofbooks · 27/06/2023 11:38

I'll add that the other programs don't allow much tinkering around or none at all ie sports wash. Before I bought mine I am sure I watched a YouTube video of someone showing the options.

helpfulperson · 27/06/2023 11:41

I have an ikea one which has a 30 minute cycle that is the only one I use.

gettingoldisshit · 27/06/2023 11:49

I have a cheapish ( I think it was £300ish) hotpoint, the basic 40 degree cycle is 45 minutes. Fantastic little machine.

have read the info...!!...its just dirty clothes that need a wash and some machines look like a space ship...bonkers....i miss our old clunky dial machine we had years ago.

Deepintheheartofbooks · 27/06/2023 11:55

@earsup true, but there are engineers out there working out the best programs and cycles to clean clothes and I think special programs for some stuff is needed like duvets or on my tumble dryer the jeans setting. But there should also be a fully customisable program setting like mine has for cottons that allows all the temps and spins for a full load. I do like the anti-crease function where it keeps spinning the drum occasionally so the clothes don't settle and crease. I can't be doing with waiting 3 hours plus for a load to wash whilst it slowly heats up the water.

My fairly recent Beko has a dial. I deliberately bought a dial machine. Mistrust any electronic display - if it plays up what can you do? The Beko does the basics, not very fast unless you are prepared to go for low loading progs which of course are a false economy.
(thanks to this thread though I have just noted that one of the eco cycles, never used, is very good and should have been using for two or three years!)

I wish that it was easier to just set your washing machine to finish at a specific time. I basically always want to put washing in before work and then take it out when I finish, about 6.30, before I start cooking. I don't care how long it takes in between these times, I just don't want it to fester in there.

gettingoldisshit · 27/06/2023 13:21

@earsup HOTPOINT NSWM743UGGUKN

Maglin · 27/06/2023 13:24

I have a miele that has lots of settings but the short cotton wash is 59 mins and I basically use that for almost everything.

Hugasauras · 27/06/2023 13:26

We have a Samsung, the main cotton wash is 1hr 27 or something. The eco one is 3 hours, and I do use that when I'm not in a rush! There's also a 15-min quick wash (that you can extend if you want stuff rinsed more, spun more or washed at a higher temp). And the mixed load setting is around an hour too I think.

johnd2 · 27/06/2023 16:56

Basically the only way to meet the efficiency requirements and get the clothes clean is to use very little water and soak the clothes for a very long time.
If you get a top of the range Miele it uses 0.4kwh of electricity and 60odd litres of water for a cotton load, but still can clean almost everything. But it would take 3 hours or so.
If you switch to the quick programmes you're paying 30-40p or more each time for the privilege depending on your electric and water costs. Also it puts that much more wear on your clothes.

It would be good if the machine had a smart meter to tell you the cost as you were unloading it, but they clearly haven't got that technology yet!

BasilParsley · 27/06/2023 17:47

The eco cycles are all great and very aspirational, but particularly in the spring and autumn (and often winter) I want a cycle that does the washing quickly so I can hang it up outside to dry on the line early morning and then bring it in, nicely dried, in the evening, thereby not spending money on electricity by having to use the tumble dryer.

I am also not happy about setting a programme where it will come on when I'm either in bed, asleep, or out of the house simply because of the potential for an electrical fire.

toomuchlikemyusername · 27/06/2023 17:51

My Bosch washing machine has a function called Speed Perfect. It takes the 30 degree wash down from forever to exactly 60 mins. Rarely use any other programme. It also has a 15 mins Quick Wash. I'd be gutted to find these features didn't exist anymore....

AHelpfulHand · 27/06/2023 17:58

I wouldn’t go for any brand like hotpoint, beko, candy etc as they are well known for setting on fire.

I have an LG 12kg one and it washes a 12kg load in 1 hour 36 mins

that's a massive generalisation. I have a (pretty modest) Beko and it's been fine in every way. There was a fire problem with some Beko item but pretty sure it wasn't washing machines - a freezer?
