Our Bosch classix 6 model now has burnt out motor after 17 years of service.. have started to look for a new machine....I did read a little about some models and a lot of comments were about very long wash cycles, I dont want all that, the bosch did a good wash in about one hour ... so looking for something similar....thanks.

if anyone interested...i went to van haaren, shop near me, wont touch the dreadful currys etc...i bought a bosch wa52 model, sounds like the one mentioned in the posts .... i didnt like the soap drawer on the hoover as it swung out, i also found out that a lot of indesit models are totally sealed units so cant be repaired...the machine arrives monday, it cost £320 in the sale, i checked and it sells for 400 etc elsewhere, i get free delivery and removal of old machine included for the price so very happy !

You can just set an "end by' time on my (so assume most) machine.

WombatChocolate · 21/07/2023 10:12

I don’t get the obsession with running fast loads.

Most machines have a timer switch these days. At least 1 load can be put on at bed time, to be done slowly and cheaply on eco overnight, and then be completed in time to hang it out in the morning.

It is possible to do 7 loads a week like that. Far cheaper and more eco than running short, expensive washes. Not inconvenient as you’re not waiting through the day to hang out…you can set it to be done whenever it suits you.

Yes, if you absolutely must do multiple loads on a single day, long washes will mean the 2nd wash isn’t done until lunchtime. But 7 loads can be done over night.

Is it that people can’t organise themselves to put loads on before bed? I’d have thought the huge cost of electricity now would help focus the mind a bit. It’s just getting into a habit of putting machine on in evening.

adagio · 21/07/2023 10:22

@WombatChocolate overnight is too noisy as it’s in the kitchen and makes the whole house vibrate, waking everyone. Only option to get a load on the line when it’s not high summer is to either do it in the evening and fold it wet in the basket ready to peg first thing, or get up v early and get a (quick) load through and pegged before leaving.

I have a Samsung. Hate it. The old LG it replaced was much nicer (quieter and better programmes).

WombatChocolate · 21/07/2023 10:40

Oh okay. I can see that machines could be noisy at night, especially in flats. Those that vibrate a lot might need their feet adjusting so they don’t jiggle around so much.

How does leaving the wet load folded in a basket overnight impact it, just out of interest? Smell? Creases?

WandaWonder · 21/07/2023 10:46

I have a Bosch series 4 and wash on 46 mins cycle mainly

I wish that it was easier to just set your washing machine to finish at a specific time. I basically always want to put washing in before work and then take it out when I finish, about 6.30, before I start cooking. I don't care how long it takes in between these times, I just don't want it to fester in there.

@gloov

many of them have a timer. I think it's much harder to find one without than with.

i messed up a few times I set mine as I assumed it was the start time not finish time & it woke me up coming on at like 4 am.

mines LG, they no longer make my exact model.

Floralnomad · 21/07/2023 10:58

I have a Bosch and mainly use a mixed load 1 hr cycle , it also has a 30 minute quickwash .

@WombatChocolate

I organise myself just fine thank you!

i don't do my washing overnight because I don't like the machine running when we are sleeping, mainly due to the fire risk, but also it disturbs our sleep.

i dry outside on the line all year, bringing it in to finish on the airer in winter.

Like the vast majority of people these days, my electricity isn't cheaper at night.

i don't do fast washes as a 15/30 minute wash doesn't seem 'enough' to me. Though given I don't work down a coal mine it would probably be fine.

it was a lovely day here yesterday but due to rain this afternoon and several days after, so yesterday I got 3 loads washed then dried on the line.

nothing wrong with my organisation thank you.

@adagio

do you have a worktop above your machine??

I bought some washing machine 'pillows'. They were about £18 on Amazon. You slide them between the machine and worktop and inflate them with a (provided) hand pump.

it stops the vibration (it stopped my machine toddling over to the oven!! I feel guilty stopping their love affair, but I was worried about it tugging it's hose to hard & soaking the floor!!

millymae · 21/07/2023 11:40

I’ve got a Hoover H wash 300 Lite 900 kg 1400 spin and use the rapid care programme which offers 14,30 and 44 minute options and lets you choose the spin speed and water temp too.
For towels and bed linen I use the 59 minute Cotton wash option which also allows you to choose temperature and spin speed.
The timings are accurate. You can use the spin cycle on its own and there are a couple of other programmes for delicates that take less than an hour

CasperGutman · 21/07/2023 15:03

I don't think you'll find one that doesn't have long cycles - they use those to clean clothes with minimal water and energy use, so as to get the efficiency ratings up.

What you want is a machine which also has a good range of acceptably short cycles, in addition to the long ones.

Our Beko has a "cottons eco" cycle which takes 3:25 or so. We use this when I'm working from home and we aren't in a rush. It also has several shorter programmes between about 00:45 and 01:25. This seems to be the sweet spot to my mind.

I don't trust anything much shorter than 45 mins to do a proper job. A previous machine had a 20 minute quick wash, and honestly you might as well just wear your clothes in the rain and call them clean.

adagio · 22/07/2023 09:15

@WombatChocolate Leaving folded wet in the basket is actually great for bedding - even ten minutes of ‘folded time’ on now counter or basket before you peg out to dry it flattens the worst of the creases out and saves ironing effort :) A work friend suggested it to me years ago and I still think fondly of her every time I’m folding / waiting!

It’s not long enough to get smelly as it’s only left for a few hours overnight then pegged by 7am before work/school etc. - live in wales so got to make the most of the drying days.

Stardustkid · 22/07/2023 09:33

@johnd2 they are getting there, this is from my Samsung washing machine

Basic washing machine without lengthy wash cycles.?

@earsup I have a 9kg Beko 1600 spin, the 40 degree cotton cycle which I use for pretty much everything has a reduce time function that you can press twice, so it starts at 2.32 reduce to 1.34 the reduce again to 1.19.

Please ignore the following if you don't want to get bogged down in cycles and yes I have a life. There is a drain and spin cycle you can run for a 1600 spin (and other options but the 1600 ) takes 22 minutes. The reason I am adding that is because there is an advertised 28 minute quick wash. The default setting is 30 degree and 600 spin but it does offer different temps 90/60/40/30/20/cold and different spin options 1200/800/600/rinse hold (where it sits in the water ie if you do it overnight it doesn't crease the clothes) and a no spin option. Depending on the combinations of temp and spin this alters the time ie 40 degree 1200 spin on this setting is 38 minutes but rinse hold will reduce this to 30 minutes and you can then use the 1600 drain and spin.

@deepintheheartofbooks what model number is your Beko washing machine these washes have a reasonable wash time. My current machine is a Beko and have over 12yrs of trouble free washing

Faz469 · 14/01/2025 23:41

I have an integrated AEG. You can alter the time and temperature of all washes. It does a cotton wash well in 48 mins. Bloody love it. We inherited it when buying the house but much better than our previous beko.

BashfulClam · 15/01/2025 08:41

I have a candy and it has a cotton wash that is 59 minutes 40 degrees and fast spin. It’s the most used preamble on it.

Tumbleweed101 · 15/01/2025 09:06

My current machine has long cycles compared to machines I’ve had previously. I miss the 15/30 min cycle I had on a different model as I work in a nursery and sometimes you want to quickly run something through the wash after work if it got paint or something grotty on it but so it will dry by morning. Longer cycles are ok for weekends.

LocalHer0e · 15/01/2025 09:12

Samsung add wash. Quick wash is 15 mins and cotton is 1hour at 20 or 1.30 at 40degrees

Iliketulips · 15/01/2025 09:17

Not sure about current models, but I've always had Indesit. I have a 40c and 60c setting that are both about an hour. Currently got a coat and jeans washing together so as machine isn't full, I've put on the 45 minute cycle which I know will clean and freshen.

Not sure what you'd hope for in terms of life expectancy, but I've had three now, first one latest 18 years, second one unfortunately six years and current one is ten years old, which I don't think is too bad for a cheaper brand.

twilightcafe · 15/01/2025 09:37

I do not run dishwashers, washing machines or tumble dryers overnight.
The risk of a fire breaking out is too high.

HellsBalls · 15/01/2025 11:42

I have a Siemens. It is great with 15, 30 and 40 min cycles, as well as the longer ones.
Mostly get by on the quick cycles.

evtheria · 15/01/2025 12:05

Edit: Didn’t realize this question was from a year ago!

We just had to (very reluctantly) get rid of our cheap old Hotpoint after about a decade of solid usage. As others mentioned the brand seems to offer a few good options for shorter cycles across its machines.

Our model was discontinued 😩 and we now have a Logik, where the short options are 'Express 15', 'Rapid 45'*, and 'Sportwear 47'. Everything else is 1hxx to 3h44 (!!!) for the Cotton 60°.

*This is a lie, it takes longer
