Shower over bath or just a shower?

Newlywedded · 20/06/2023 16:38

We are renovating our home having moved in a year ago. It’s just the two of us. There is one bathroom which has a wall in shower toilet and sink and no bath. Which is fine for us - I miss a bath maybe once a month when I’m tired and just wish I could get into one. But otherwise it’s fine. However, if we ever sell would not having a bath put people off?
what would you do?
there is no space for a separate shower cubicle sadly,

I could never live somewhere without a bath.

Does it actually have room for a full-sized bath? If so I would put one in and have a shower over the bath.

However if it's a tiny bathroom and it would mean squeezing in a munchkin-sized bath that you couldn't properly lie down in, then I wouldn't bother.

BridportSpectacular · 20/06/2023 17:15

I like a bath but it wouldn't put me off an otherwise good house if there wasn't one. If it's likely to sell to a family then they are more likely to want a bath.

But do what works for you - a nice big walk in shower is lovely.

GG1986 · 20/06/2023 17:17

I would only buy a house with a bath, mainly because I have small children x

ScoopyDoo · 20/06/2023 17:22

Two bathrooms with showers only here. We took the bath out when we renovated the bathroom, and built an extension with a walk-in shower room. Two adults, never used the bath, don’t miss it. We have no plans to sell and when we do, realise it may put some off (though it is obvious there is room to reinstate it) but we prefer it this way. I’m of the view that we should have the rooms the way we want, not constantly try and second guess a mystery future owner.

JanesBlond · 20/06/2023 17:24

Shower over bath, isn’t that standard anyway rather than having a separate cubicle? I wouldn’t want the option of a bath taken away if you can fit one in.

Neversaygoodbye · 20/06/2023 17:35

We have teenagers & also removed the small bath when renovating the main bathroom and put in a walk-in shower. No one misses a bath.

BishopRock · 20/06/2023 17:35

I've a shower in a bath. God I hate it. When I have chance I'm changing to a shower.

Newlywedded · 20/06/2023 17:51

Yep there’s room for a full sized bath. Previous owners took it out for a more accessible walk in shower option as they were elderly . I do prefer it to when I grew up and we had had the shower over the bath .

good Point about doing house how you want it and not for a future mystery owner , thanks

I hate showers over baths. We have a large walk in shower which we both love. No bath because they are a waste of water and time.

Some families with young children might want a bath although they manage fine in other European countries with only showers

Why though? Just because you have to step over the side of the bath?

I will have a shower 9 times out of 10 as it's quicker and easier for washing hair. I do prefer to have the option though. To have a soak in the bath or to soak items if needed. And anyone with young children will need a bath. Or even if you have children visiting, like if you are grandparents.

We will be buying what is hopefully our forever home next year and I'm keeping a list on Rightmove. Anything with no bath goes much lower down the list really.

mondaytosunday · 20/06/2023 18:09

I never take baths but still had shower over as it's the main bathroom. My teenage daughter likes baths so we put one in her shower - only en suite.
A friend has just spent £££ putting a bath back in to the main bathroom at her house - she took it out ten years ago when first moved in but her (grown) kids want the option.
Live fir yourself but unless you have a strong feeling against showers over then put a bath do you can indulge once a month!
A P shaped bath will give you extra shower space.

As I said, families with children manage without a bath in a lot of other European countries so not true that a bath is "needed" with young children.

Pemba · 20/06/2023 19:54

I wonder how they manage then? Most tiny children dislike water splashing anywhere near their faces.

Plus bathtime with toys etc is a fun part of the bedtime routine.

I am not saying you can't do something different, but I wonder what the routine is?

RandomMess · 20/06/2023 21:21

We used a large baby bath in the shower tray for very many years.

TheMrsColumbo · 20/06/2023 21:36

I hate showers in baths, they feel a bit cramped and there's the issue of a curtain or a screen that's in the way when your bathing.
We took the baths out when we moved in and have big walk in showers. Nobody has missed them, there's always the hot tub of anyone needs a relaxing soak.
We always showered as well as bathed the children from them being babies, partly so they would get used to having water on their faces.

C4tastrophe · 20/06/2023 22:17

I haven’t had a bath in 20 years. Absolute waste of space, energy and water.
A big shower is great.

Campervangirl · 20/06/2023 22:27

I've recently moved into a house with a walk in shower, no bath, great I thought, wrong!
It's lovely having room to move but there's nowhere to hoik your foot up to shave ya legs 😉
I'm really missing a bath, winter and it's cold out, a nice warm bath with a good book.

GettingStuffed · 21/06/2023 00:09

Shower only would be a deal breaker for me.

Redglitter · 21/06/2023 00:15

I'd love a proper walk in shower. I'd go for that rather than a bath anytime. If I could afford it I'd get rid of my bath in a heartbeat

If you're planning on living there for years do what suits you. It's your home. Have it the way you want. Not having a bath might put some future buyers off but a lot of people would prefer it. Do what works for you

RocketIceLollie · 21/06/2023 00:17

It would probably put off young families with children needing bath time. Depends on the space of the bathroom if a bath could be squeezed in at a later date really.

mrsfollowill · 21/06/2023 00:25

What you prefer changes over your lifetime. When my DS was under 6/7 - yes absolutely he was better off with a bath- at that point we had a bath with a shower over. DH and I preferred a shower but no problem we hopped over the side of the bath. DS is now early 20's and still living with us- DH and I are much older - we all prefer a shower over a bath these days. DH is still pretty mobile but I feel really unsafe trying to get into a shower over a bath so we have a big walk in shower- none of us miss a bath really.
My mum is nearly 80 and got her bath taken out about 7 yrs ago and just has a big walk in shower- is a godsend now she is wobbly and ill. Putting a bath back in does not cost the earth and if I was buying a new house so long as there was room to swap the bath/shower it would not bother me.

UsingChangeofName · 21/06/2023 00:48

I would never buy a house without a bath, or a BIG allowance in the price to not only cover the cost of re-doing the bathroom, but the hassle and inconvenience after just moving house however if you have only recently bought your house, I presume you are not planning to move out anytime soon, so put in whatever suits you and your partner / family.

Tinkietot · 21/06/2023 00:50

We didn’t buy a house as it had no bath as a young couple knowing we wanted kids in the future.

Depends if you ever want to sell the property
