Hi all,
I'm considering buying a home in Hartlepool TS25 and I was hoping to get some advice from locals on this matter.
I'm originally from Eastern Europe and have been living around London for almost 6 years now. Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy around London or even in Milton Keynes where I currently live.
This would be my first buy and I would afford something up to 100k. Please can you advise on how life is in Hartlepool ? What would be best to describe the local culture ?

Thank you very much 😊

I think you need to start a new thread with Hartlepool in the title.

CatsOnTheChair · 07/06/2023 10:24

I don't know Hartlepool very well, but I would say the NE has some amazing areas, and some really bad areas. You need to be careful.

Off to look at 100k houses in the area!

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 07/06/2023 10:26

I live in TS25!! It isn't actually Hartlepool itself. Small place nearby and fabulous ime. Beaches. Library. Few shops. Have you got dc?

Nicollett · 07/06/2023 17:31

Hello 🤗 Thank you for your replies. I'm not sure what dc means ? Can you please advise? The reson for my message being posted is that I have heard that there is a degree of resistance from the locals to the outsiders coming in. Just wanted to have a feel for local opinions. Have gone through the job market and seems to be a lot of opportunities in Newcastle and Durham which is not that far from Hartlepool.

It's still quite a hike from Hartlepool to Durham. You would need a car for work. So you have children? Are you wanting a house or OK with an apartment?

For £100,000 in Hartlepool, you might fi d yourself a gem or you could find yourself in an awful neighbourhood, riddled with antisocial behaviour and drugs. It's not somewhere I would want to buy without good ultra local knowledge ie down to the street itself.

QuestionableMouse · 07/06/2023 18:00

My old house in a decent village just outside Hartlepool is currently up for sale for 65k. It's only a two bed terrace but the village is beautiful and had a good primary school.

Hartlepool is great, mostly. Good schools in the main, decent transport links to Newcastle/York/London, good beaches, close to some beautiful country.

There's a decent range of supermarkets and the usual other shops. Town centre is dire but ime most of them are now anyway. The Historic Quey is fun for a wander around on an afternoon, as is the atr gallery. There's a nice choice of parks, though some are better than others. Lots of pubs, if that's your thing but there's sport clubs too.

It's not the most culturally diverse town but it's getting better. I'm white British so probably not best placed to comment really.

Pic is the view from my old house!

Dc is dear children op..

HatchetJob · 07/06/2023 19:19

You need to get more specific knowledge for Hartlepool, like PPs it’s a very hit and miss town. We’ve had a friend leave recently after living on a street with lots of racism directed towards him.

also Durham to Hartlepool is still a bit of a drive and no direct train links. There is with Newcastle but it’s the coast train and slow and not that frequent. The A19 is a busy road as well.

Nicollett · 07/06/2023 20:20

Thank you for the insight. I have my own car and I'm aware that I would have to drive to work and that's not a problem for me. I would like to buy a house and I'm happy to shop around as I'm not fussy, I've looked in Peterlee as well and seems to me that the houses there look very nice and they are going for 85k - 90k freehold and have gardens as well. Down south I would not even dream about getting a house this big. I'm after more space and a quet life rather than chasing money for no purpose. I would like to have a child soon and want to be able to offer a decent size room. I'm aware that the wages are not as high but I would think to have a better life outside work.

Which houses have you been looking at?

Post the links and we can tell you about the area!

mllke · 07/06/2023 21:09

That is my postcode so hi and welcome if you do decide to move here. Hartlepool is becoming more diverse, although I think there is still some casual racism in general the town is good however there is some run down areas. If you need any advice about particular areas or streets please feel free to message. I do like living here and it is home . There is many good primary schools and lots of support around the town.

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 07/06/2023 21:33

Hello mllke we are neighbours!
Hartlepool is a better place than Peterlee imo!!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/06/2023 21:35

If you are looking to work in Newcastle, five days a week, then I would recommend coming further north and living within a much shorter commute. Even getting from the outskirts of the region can take up to an hour in rush hour, so driving in from Hartlepool daily would be ridiculous.

Hi

And it most definitely is

MonkeyHanger1 · 07/06/2023 22:03

Another Poolie here 👋🏻

Also happy to help with any specifics 🙂

PickAChew · 07/06/2023 22:11

Peterlee is defilitely hit and miss. SisIL has barely left the toen in her entire life but still bought a house that she really regrets in your price bracket. Nothing wrong with the house physically but terrible neighbours and feral kids. She and DH grew up in a quiet cul de sac near the town centre but we did catch a glimpse of that place on Police Interceptors, once 😂

PrimalOwl10 · 07/06/2023 22:12

Hartlepool is a dive as is Peterlee.

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 07/06/2023 22:18

TS25 is beautiful...

Do you already have a job lined up in the north east? Where is it if so as you’d be better off making there your starting point when searching for houses. If you’re jobs in Newcastle or Durham then Hartlepool is a long commute twice a day.
Hartlepool is a very very hit and miss place, as a lot of areas are in NE.

OneCup · 07/06/2023 22:32

Hi, if I were you, I'd first look for a job then find a house nearby. I wouldn't gamble on just finding a job in newcastle/Durham/etc for you to realise about distances.
I'd suggest to rent first too to get a sense of different areas as it can be very hit and miss.

I have not got a job lined up just yet, however the company I work for have a branch up north. Even with the long commute I'm not put off... I have to commute 40-45 mins daily for my job now so I don't view this as a big issue. There is also the possibility of working from home maybe 2 days a week which is great if that's feasible from the employer side.

QuestionableMouse · 07/06/2023 22:36

The Northgate house is on what's called "the Headland" locally. It's on quite a busy road iirc, and directly opposite working docks. Parking is usually tight and when the carnival (basically a big funfair with other activities) it may get a even more busy.

The last 2 I would avoid, billingham I am not really sure of the areas individually.
