Hi all,
I'm considering buying a home in Hartlepool TS25 and I was hoping to get some advice from locals on this matter.
I'm originally from Eastern Europe and have been living around London for almost 6 years now. Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy around London or even in Milton Keynes where I currently live.
This would be my first buy and I would afford something up to 100k. Please can you advise on how life is in Hartlepool ? What would be best to describe the local culture ?

Thank you very much 😊

That Langley Park one is a gem @pickachew

AlviarinAesSedai · 09/06/2023 14:17

I wouldn’t buy the Fulforth Sacriston one! Not unless you’re local and don’t mind living on old Pit Estate.
Langley Park one is lovely, especially if you drive, two minutes away from main road out of village.

PickAChew · 09/06/2023 14:48

That's why I said it's important to do your research, @AlviarinAesSedai 😃

It's a difficult price point because a lot of what is available is tenanted and without local knowledge you might as well toss a coin as to whether you end up in a quiet neighbourhood or somewhere that makes you thoroughly miserable and a street can change to the latter from the former in the time it takes for a few pensioners to die and their houses to end up in the hands of cut price landlords.

AlviarinAesSedai · 09/06/2023 15:11

You’re right @PickAChew because two minutes walk away is lovely. Which is a shame as houses are well built. And views and wood walk’s beautiful.
I think a lot of the old pit villages are like that. Local knowledge is key.

Apologies for the late reply, work has been a bit crazy.... Work has an office in South Yorkshire, my bad I thought this would be close to Durham and Middlesbrough. I have some friends that have relocated to Newcastle about 3 years ago and they managed to buy a lovely house and since we have been to visit their life has improved enormously even with a lower wage job, hence why I would like to move in the area. I intend to come and visit Hartlepool and Durham for a few days to have a feel of the city and the area, maybe view some houses if that's possible.

@EvelynKatie they are such typical Sunderland houses! I lived in two of them as a child (including one in Hartington Street).

Nicollett · 09/06/2023 15:26

Thank you for all the links, the houses look very nice and they are what I would like to buy. I definitely would like to get a house by the seaside. All your comments have given me a good understating on what I need to look at and avoid.

South Yorkshire is MILES away, and very likely not close to Hartlepool.

I lived in the area for a few years and loved it, the coast is just lovely! The prices have gone up there so harder to find houses around 100k now.

South Yorkshire is a long way from Durham and Middlesbrough!

North Yorkshire is the largest county in England, and Middlesbrough is in the northern part of North Yorkshire. I think there’s somewhere in the region of 90 miles between Middlesbrough and the northern parts of South Yorkshire?
Hartlepool and Durham are further north than Middlesbrough.

QuestionableMouse · 09/06/2023 16:56

It's 91 miles from Hartlepool to Barnsley. Google suggests it would take around two hours one way.

Nicollett · 10/06/2023 08:21

Thank you for your messages. Noted on the distance, like I said my bad I thought it was a bit closer. I am still interested buying my first home around that area as I mentioned before I plan to visit the area and maybe view some houses while I'm up there.

Hi I’m also looking to move to Hartlepool near Ward Jackson park from the south east but need to think about suitable secondary schools for my children to move to before we pull the trigger. Any advice gratefully received!

Hi that area of the town is the posh part depending whereabouts the house is. Nice area of town. There is a couple of good secondary schools high tunstall and English martyrs close by.

Mulberry18 · 26/06/2023 14:29

Hi, thanks for the reply. yes it’s just opposite the park. We did think it seemed a nice part of town, so good to know lol. Was looking at both of those schools plus also Dyke House had a good Ofsted report (but I’m not always convinced on those as a measure - my son’s “outstanding” school where we currently live is a nightmare lol)

Dyke house is a good school if your child is quite a high achiever however their behaviour policy is very strict and rigid, I can partly understand this due to the area in which it is based. I would also avoid if you have a child with sen.

@mllke thanks again for your help!
