Moving to north Wales?

We are considering moving to north Wales.
We are going to check out some areas next weekend, and were wondering where is nice to live within a reasonable commuting distance of Bangor?
We would want to be further east than Bangor, and preferably near the coast.
Thanks

I live near Bangor in a lovely community not far from the Menai Straits.

My teenage children have spent their summer with their friends on their bikes and swimming in the lake in Llanberis. They've also spent a lot of time on the beach in Dinas Dinlle.

We are not high earners but beaches, lakes and mountains are free and accessible and my teenagers have had an amazing summer.

Don't worry too much about the Welsh language. If you decide to send your children to a Welsh medium school, ask about an immersion programme available for them. If you make an effort to learn you'll find it easier to understand all aspects of community life.

Good luck with your new job and with learning Welsh. (Say Something in Welsh is probably the best way to learn).

@wherethecityis , Looking at Rightmove, there are 3-bed houses in Bangor starting at £99K

@fluffysheeparewonderful - every other local authority will pay our specialist contract workers based on electronic signatures. Flintshire will only do faxes. It's bizarre.

Mynydd Isa is basically a series of housing estates on a hill. At least they're demolishing the concrete monstrosity that was the high school. Much of the other villages around Mold aren't bad.

Buckley is a bit of a shithole, but in comparison to Connor's Quay, Flint and Queensferry it's not that bad.

@Zanatdy - anyone who survived Elfed and thrived is a force to be reckoned with! We're 6 generations Buckley on one side and 3 on the other - I ran as soon as I could.

Oh are they demolishing Argoed? Yeah Buckley isn’t that bad in comparison is it? My family from Buckley go back generations!

GolgafrinchamB · 02/09/2023 21:59

@Zanatdy yes, in-laws live around the corner and DH went to Argoed. It’s being demolished to be a car park once they’ve they built the new one.

When were you at Elfed?

They are all either HMO/student houses or in an area where someone I spoke to at the council told me you wouldn’t want to live in under any circumstances.
If you exclude those, the prices are an awful lot higher

Thanks @GogLais re the language. It’s theroretical in my case as I’m not planning to move to Wales, but I admire how the Welsh have kept their language going in the shadow of a dominant culture.

That’s mad, I had no idea some of the council were still using faxes.

yeah argoed is being made into a super school 3-16 I think. About time because it is an awful looking school!

Great suggestions previously. Can I also add these to your search. I know you said it's not a job within the council you have been offered but I'm suspicious - think very carefully if it is.

GogLais · 03/09/2023 09:09

@wherethecityis , of course. They are probably cheap for a reason.

@TheGander , the Welsh translation of the Bible helped to keep the language alive. BBC Wales - History - Themes - Welsh language: The Bible in Wales
More recently, S4C has played a big part. Gwynfor Evans - Wikipedia

Conwy and Rhos-on-Sea are both lovely places to live, with close access to amazing beaches and within half an hour of Bangor and Snowdonia. We’re in Colwyn Bay which has it’s problems but equally has plenty to do and some lovely people who are working hard to improve the town. We paid under £200,000 for our four bed Edwardian house which is in a quiet, friendly part of the town and we’ve never had any problems.

Lots of schools here are English speaking for most lessons with welsh taught separately. Lots of my friends in the area are welsh and don’t speak the language fluently and get by with no problems. We also looked in Abergele and Llandudno and would be equally as happy in some of the other coastal towns between here and Bangor.

Hairyfairy01 · 02/09/2023 23:59

Thank you so much. I’ve obviously spent hours upon hours on rightmove but hadn’t seen quite a lot of these and it’s so hard when you have no idea where would be nice to settle.
I would absolutely, definitely, not be working for the council though😆

If you need anymore information about the area round Bangor I'm happy to help.

Same OP. Glad my council theory was wrong 😉

@MrsKeats
I recently moved from Chester to N Wales, and wish I hadn't. I have met some good people but only as I've forced myself to make a supreme effort. Loneliness is part of it and I feel like I'm on another planet,

TiredWelshMam · 04/09/2023 11:04

@Cavend Where do you live and what have you tried so far to get to know people?

wherethecityis · 04/09/2023 15:26

@Cavend it was like that when I moved to where I am now and despite making an effort I still know very few people here. I’m prepared to put in some effort anywhere I move to but I think this is something that’s just associated with moving to a new place and certainly not specific to north wales

OP posts:
Cavend · 04/09/2023 20:30

@TiredWelshMam
It's Ewloe, Flintshire. Met some great people at church, people at work ok but not my immediate team, one is really irritating, but that's not specific to N Wales, the person concerned isn't Welsh ! Have met people through a hobby too,
I don't like change, but have had to adapt quickly.

TiredWelshMam · 06/09/2023 07:45

@Cavend Sorry, I don't know the area to suggest anything specific. I was going to suggest looking for a church but I see you've done that. I'm afraid it is difficult to move into any area and make new friends from scratch. Have you got time to volunteer? That's the only way my mum got to know new people when she moved areas a few years ago. She joined the Robins team in her local hospital and got to know people that way. Joining a language or any arty type class would be another option. Good luck x

MrsKeats · 21/09/2023 14:11

Oh dear @Cavend

Taffom · 08/11/2023 21:30

Hi could anyone recommend Mostyn,it seems very quiet no restaurants, shops and only 1 pub it seems, which has recently opened on a trial basis.
We are looking to retire there soon and are from Manchester.

Ewloe is 3 miles from Chester and around a ten minute drive. What makes it feel like a different planet? Can you drive?

What are your reasons for choosing Mostyn?

Taffom · 09/11/2023 08:09

Good point.....my son and his family recently moved there as they wanted a quieter laid back life after living in a busy part of Manchester.
They have for a long time been asking us to relocate aswell and ideally settle near them.
I've been a bit reluctant to do so,with all the upheaval that goes with it,but my wife is adamant that it will be a good move and see's all the positives.
We have actually found a house literally a minutes walk from my son's house, which is what we wanted,so it couldn't be better. The house itself is a bargain compared to what you pay in Manchester and leaves us very comfortable,so we will never be wanting again, plus we would be able to help my son and his wife in the future.
We looked at housing in Prestatyn,Rhyl, Connah's Quay, Bagillt and surrounding areas but we couldn't find what we were looking for.
I have not seen many posts on here that mention Mostyn,so I was wondering whether anyone had any input about it,live there, etc.

fluffysheeparewonderful · 09/11/2023 09:59

In all honesty it’s not the most amazing area and the other areas you’ve been looking at are also quite deprived too. I think in Flintshire some of the nicer places are hawarden, parts of mold, Northop and Northop hall. But housing is a little dearer in those areas. In terms of things to do, mold is a town with lots of cafes and a market twice a week so a bit more going on there. Some areas of mold are nicer than others though.

if you do move to mostyn, it sounds random but the pet cemetery in Holywell nearby does a lovely afternoon tea!
