What colours are in at the moment?

Have bought a house which we are redecorating. Apart from knowing DS’s room will be blue and the hallways of white, we have no idea what colour to paint the rest!

We need colours to paint the double living room / dining room, the second living rooms, two double bedrooms and a study.

I love the grey look but conscious that will soon become dated. Any ideas?

No grey unless it’s very warm and could be described as greige.

creams, off whites and beige tones. Lots of wood in all shades, greens, still quite a bit of navy.

Fluffyhoglets · 01/05/2023 14:36

Warmer colours seem to be coming in - banishing the grey! I liked grey but ready for a change now. We're going for sage green/bluey greens/teal whenever we redecorate and then a warming pale warm nuetral - the Dulux Heritage colours are nice.

I think pinks and beige neutrals are big now as well.

Not grey.
I'd paint everywhere white and see how the rooms look at different times of the day and in different seasons, but that's me.

OneCup · 01/05/2023 14:42

To be honest, if you love grey, perhaps you should just go for it?

stormytwilightnight · 01/05/2023 14:45

Why does it matter what colours are trendy? Don’t you just choose what you actually like?

I paint everywhere white and use accessories to add colour. I like rooms that are light and airy. Easier to change a few cushion covers and a rug than paint a whole room.

The grey mustard look seems to be on its way out.

Hairbrushhandle · 01/05/2023 14:47

My entire house is various shades of blue. I try to pick another colour and then it morphs into blue on the 6th tester pot.

This. My house looks like a muted rainbow threw up all over it. I love it.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 01/05/2023 15:01

Dark blue, olive green, rust / dark orange from various interior things I’ve been looking at

Babamamananarama · 01/05/2023 15:03

Current trend is for terracotta/unpainted plaster colour, soft mauves etc. Weirdly if you look at old episodes of Friends, Monica's apartment and Carol & Susan's have colours that have become very fashionable again.

As in grey walls, mustard colour decor? That's my house then! 😂

Quite. Grey is out with who exactly? Does anyone care about "their" opinion. Looking at MN, some people clearly do.

OP use colours you like.

Backtothegym · 01/05/2023 18:13

Greys been done to death, it went so far, with folks doing everything grey and doing it wrong, with steel greys and harsh greys, so now it’s the new love laugh love of home decor.

right now, greens, blush pinks, navy, copper etc are in. But as a pp said do what you like, as you need to live there. But I’d avoid grey

Spendonsend · 01/05/2023 18:19

I'm seeing mauve pop up
More beigey colours
And terracotta

LadyVictoriaSponge · 01/05/2023 18:25

The thing is in general these days I’ve noticed houses are generally the same colour palette throughout the house, back in the nineties it was common to have a yellow kitchen, a blue hallway, a red living room, a purple bedroom, you hardly see that now! so it can be very difficult to decorate as what you do in one room has to flow to the next, that’s why grey, griege, whites, neutrals are popular, you can use these as a base for your house and add accessories for colour. Yes I agree grey has been the top colour for a while and people say it’s out, however I think what is out is the Mrs Hinch look of grey, grey crushed velvet and mirrored furniture, if you use grey as a neutral and team it with other neutrals or colour and layer it with interesting furniture and accessories it still works really well.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 01/05/2023 18:30

If you want to be “fashionable” the look that all home account influencers on YouTube appear together using are various shades of beige on beige, all their houses look the same though, all with the obligatory fake olive tree in a wicker pot, so be prepared for this look to be done to death also.

Maybe I just need some inspiration 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is that really a strange concept? Obviously it will be painted a colour we like rather than one that’s on trend just for the sake of it but I don’t know what that is yet…

I like the grey look but find it too common so looking for something else. Think it will be neural tones but will go bold for a couple of the rooms.

Lol - we've painted our whole house white with living in it and deciding being the route forwards ... I keep coming back to blue, or silver ... I love a wallpaper but it's got fancy birds on it ... which are turquoise blue 🤪

Spendonsend · 01/05/2023 18:34

Probably not fashionable, but i find a lot of paint companies websites will tell you what colours to paint together.
Dulux has a colour of the year each year and creates a few different schemes for that colour

Kittykatchunjy · 01/05/2023 18:34

Love green and so many different shades

Hibernatalie · 01/05/2023 18:40

Sage green

Hibernatalie · 01/05/2023 18:41

I also really like navy blue in one room that you want to be a bit bold in

Sounds great!! I'd love pics!

RM2013 · 01/05/2023 20:25

Personally I’d say go for what you love!! I remember our first house in the 90’s was a rainbow tastic mix - we had a yellow hallway, pale teal kitchen, blue lounge and lilac bedroom 🤣 I loved it!

our current house was decorated in a mix of neutral colours when we moved and I love all the colours. Hall, stairs and landing and kitchen os a pale beige colour, bedroom is a pinkish beige. The boys bedrooms are grey as is the lounge but I still love grey - albeit it’s a very muted grey.

we will decorate at some point - I’m thinking shades of green for the bedroom
