What colours are in at the moment?

Have bought a house which we are redecorating. Apart from knowing DS’s room will be blue and the hallways of white, we have no idea what colour to paint the rest!

We need colours to paint the double living room / dining room, the second living rooms, two double bedrooms and a study.

I love the grey look but conscious that will soon become dated. Any ideas?

You don't like grey because it's too common and/or dated so you want to paint it what's trendy now so that it's common for now and will soon become dated?Grin

Like a pp, my house is like a muted rainbow. I tend to choose something I know I love and then pick paint/tiles/flooring around it. So in my bathroom, I chose some Moroccan floor tiles and picked paint and rugs and wall tiles to match the various tones. My snug has William Morris Golden Lily wallpaper on three walls so the sofa/paint/rug/bookcases pick out the colours from the paper.

Sometimes, I just choose a colour I love and go for it. My kitchen is the colour of papaya for example!

I paint everywhere white and use accessories to add colour. I like rooms that are light and airy. Easier to change a few cushion covers and a rug than paint a whole room.

I agree. Much easier having white walls caring carer, and styling with accessories.

Why does it matter what colours are trendy? Don’t you just choose what you actually like?

This.

I painted every room a different colour because I can't stand white walls and I picked colours I liked. Tester pots in blues and greens and reds and just picked from those what I liked. My inspiration was looking at rows of tester pots and picking the ones I liked.

Buy some home magazines to inspire you.

My entire house is various shades of blue. I try to pick another colour and then it morphs into blue on the 6th tester pot.

Same, but with green. I really do try to pick other colours, but I just like the greens the best 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pale blues, green beiges, they call is coastal grandma. The Pantone colour for this year is magenta. On the face of it not an easy colour but actually goes really well in a with a grey palette, dark grey walls with jewel tones in magenta and gold.

Have a look on Pinterest.

Use colours that you like, not what someone says are "in"!

Mad About The House is a good blog (also Instagram) with lots of ideas for choosing a colour palette. Laura Jackson is an approachable interior designer (she has a podcast, and doubtless Instagram). Nicola Harding does fantastic colour schemes. House and Garden is great, and most of its content is free online.

Most of the designers talk about a 'red thread' - so by all means have different colours in different rooms, but pick up elements from one to another so that the rooms are connected.

THere seems to be lots of soft pinks/taupes/beiges/plasters around, which are great, but can be hard to use, because the light in the room changes the colours a lot - any violet pigment can read quite cold, for example, or something can come out very peachy-orange. If you get the right pink shade for a neutral, they look fantastic with black, mustard, all kinds of green, navy, chocolate. Be careful with lighter blues though - I ended with one room looking very sugary sickly indeed, and started again.

Rainbow colours 🌈

That's my vibe, but not sure my taste is fashionable.

Yellownotblue · 02/05/2023 11:35

Yellow, pink, terracotta/rust, olive green, pistachio, midnight blue. Grey only if it’s the darkest shade. Natural wood. Black, brass and gold accents.

—I may or may not be describing my own house☺️—

Remember to keep your lighting, room aspect, when you use the room most, room use into account when choosing colours. All these things will play a role in how the colour works in a room. Grey can be either from the cool side of the colour wheel (Blue toned) or from the warm side (brown/beige toned) these greys will look very different depending on lighting. Cool tones can open up spaces making them appear brighter and airier (Kitchen/halls) but if it’s a cosy feel you want (living rooms bedrooms) opt from warm undertones. Dark Green, warm greys, dark blue, rust, dusty yellows all popular now. And Lots of 90s colours coming back in now terracottas, beige, peach!

pinks/plaster & beiges are back in

GasPanic · 02/05/2023 12:13

I am the same as some others. Prefer to paint the walls neutral colours (white/magnolia) then put colour in with features like paintings and ornaments/curtains and furnishings.

I think it is a better way of doing it, esp. if you are thinking of selling in the next few years. It's easy to top up, cheap on paint and very easy to cover with the next coat. Plus it looks really fresh to me.

KirstenBlest · 02/05/2023 13:06

Magnolia's back in, but I wouldn't have it. White for me.

Adding art and soft furnishings brings the colours into a room.

mondaytosunday · 02/05/2023 13:23

Pale pink, deep turquoise, pattern.
