"Through room"

Upstairs in our house we have a "through" room. You need to go through it to access the other half of the house (very bad diagram attached!).

We don't need to use it as a bedroom and I am a bit stumped as to what to use it for. We don't need it for any of the following: living room, library, dressing room, home office, gym, playroom or nursery

I want it to be used and enjoyed as it is a stunning room. I suppose it could be an upstairs sitting area - but just wondering if people more creative than me have any bright ideas!

Have you got kids? If so, when they get to gaming age it would be a good space to set up with a console etc - not in their rooms so anyone can join in and you can keep an eye on what they're up to. It would be a great tween/teenage chill space - bean bags, foosball table, tv.

Wondered that but also thinking if there any options more on the adult side! Upstairs gin bar or similar?!

If u don’t have kids. Do u have any hobbies?

greenvelvetgloves · 26/04/2023 14:56

Reading and tv - bit boring really!

Library and reading room.

FlyingFang · 26/04/2023 15:01

What about making the highlighted bedroom into the through room?

Does it get much light? You could go mad with indoor plants and have an indoor garden with a nice chair for reading.

Possibly but that room doesn't have a door leading to the other side of the house - only the annoying through room does! In a while we might change the layout so we don't have a through room but that won't be for a few years

Gets lovely light - that's a nice idea - extra sitting room with lots of plants everywhere!

Put up a studd wall to create a corridor to the room it leads to, then you end up with another proper room?

ApolloandDaphne · 26/04/2023 15:23

Is it not really annoying having a bedroom you need to walk through? It looks like the whole area needs a rejig.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 26/04/2023 15:26

Do both landings have a set of stairs attached?

VeggieSalsa · 26/04/2023 15:29

We use our through room (was a box room) as an office, but appreciate you don’t need one of those.

I suppose the question is what do you need… I’d probably go with library and a place for reading and all my books. Or a games room with a TV, console and table for jigsaws / board games. Essentially a bit of a hobby room, my sewing bits could go in there too… The downside of that is I like to keep walkway spaces tidy and organised and leave mess in rooms where I can shut the door until I go back in, and you wouldn’t have that option with this room.

But I would personally change the layout as a priority to make the skinny room the through room and add in a new door ASAP, as it looks like you actually have 2 through rooms - the one you’ve identified and then the bedroom next to it that you have to go through to get to the second landing and other two bedrooms, which makes them both feel a bit ‘wasted’.

I second room full of plants and bookshelves and reading books - a tropical library

LucyGoosey22 · 26/04/2023 15:37

Depends on how accurate your drawing is and whether you're up for a project, but you could steal some space from it and make your bathroom bigger, and then use what's left as a hobby type room?

crazecatlady2 · 26/04/2023 15:43

We've got one of those too. Window at each end (so we could put a stud wall up and create 2 rooms)There is shower room adjacent so that'd be OK. Currently we have big book cases, a hi-fi set up, a TV two desks (and computer) and a hobbies table. The cats love it too

RedLem0nade · 26/04/2023 15:48

Also agree with plans and books, nice gilded mirrors, a chaise longue or a bureau. Thinking “Age of Innocence” type interiors from the Scorsese movie😍

I love this idea! And maybe a bar as well :)

ChristineCricket · 26/04/2023 15:54

I know I’m boring but this would be where I would put laundry baskets.

SinisterKnitter · 26/04/2023 16:06

Haven't you essentially got 2 of those 'through rooms'? I'd do what @FlyingFang suggests and create a proper corridor which enables access to all rooms.

It is a bit but we can't afford to make big changes at the moment!

Do both landings have a set of stairs attached?

Yes - so it's only if you are up there you have to walk through to get to the other side. It would make a lovely guest bedroom but it isn't practical for that reason!

OP posts:
ZaZathecat · 26/04/2023 16:25

It would be a music room if it were my house

greenvelvetgloves · 26/04/2023 16:26

We have a room earmarked for a library downstairs - also the ceiling in the through room is a bit too low.

I wish I had more hobbies so could turn it into a crafting room or something like that!

I think realistically it looks like it will be some kind of seating area upstairs until we get to the point where we can put in a corridor. At the moment it feels like we are not using the space properly but the layout is bonkers

OP posts:
longtompot · 26/04/2023 16:28

Would you be able to put in a hall and then a doorway off it into the current through room?
I'd be tempted to create another living room, maybe a library/ media room, especially if you don't need another bedroom
