Is this a reasonable amount of damage after new windows?

Hi all,

had some windows fitted. Is this amount of damage to the plaster to be expected? The window fitter (part of a national company) said they would make it good, but is it likely I will have to have it replastered to make it look good? Sorry never had new windows before!

That looks right to me based on our windows being replaced

Cherrybloss0m · 17/04/2023 18:52

Ah ok, thank you - maybe I had unreasonable expectations! Will a replaster be needed do you think or can window fitters ‘make good’?

I wouldn't be happy with that. I've had windows replaced in two houses and never had that mess.

AspinallaSmythe · 17/04/2023 18:53

Mine have always put a trim on afterwards.

Clymene · 17/04/2023 18:55

No, not normal

ReadersD1gest · 17/04/2023 18:55

God, no. There are lumps missing!

DGay · 17/04/2023 18:55

I've had all windows replaced and didn't have any of those issues.

ClaraBourne · 17/04/2023 18:57

There is a big hole to the bottom left!😧

Cherrybloss0m · 17/04/2023 19:00

To clarify the job isn’t finished! Did anyone have this part way through and it ended up ok? A little bit worried now!

No I wouldn’t accept that as a finished job . I’m finding it a little hard to enlarge the picture and not loose the details , but at worst I would expect the gaps to be properly filled , possibly expanding foam and trims at sides . Also the window sills don’t look evenly matched at the bottom left join to me either .

Snoopyandthemuppets · 17/04/2023 19:00

The windows are not level - look carefully - there are not level. Massive holes underneath and glue sealant all over the panes of glass. Absolutely not normal.

OneFrenchEgg · 17/04/2023 19:01

No and chase it up. A national company f*ucked bits of my house and I still resent it. They did a couple of bodge jobs and a couple of decent repairs and one hideous 'can't repair! Which I was too busy at the time to pursue.

Theraffarian · 17/04/2023 19:02

Sorry cross post with your update , to be fair we had a fair amount of damage surrounding windows , especially if you are replacing the ones that came with the house originally. Do make sure they fill the gaps properly though and not just cover with trim , otherwise you will have noise issues from outside .

Whisper23 · 17/04/2023 19:03

Arts those sills original or did they put those in?

jalopy · 17/04/2023 19:04

The windows are wonky.

Cherrybloss0m · 17/04/2023 19:04

Oh dear, I’m getting a little worried now. The sills are original (wooden). The windows that were replaced were the original windows so circa 90 years old. What should they fill massive gaps like that with? Isn’t that a replaster job?

OP posts:
Cherrybloss0m · 17/04/2023 19:05

It’s a bay window, so I don’t think they are wonky; it’s the angle. However I could be wrong!

OP posts:
Clymene · 17/04/2023 19:07

I mean it's fine that it looks like that now , assuming they're going to come and refill. Mine looked a bit of a mess but then I was left with bare plaster around the edge that was easy to paint

ReadersD1gest · 17/04/2023 19:07

It's a bay? It doesn't look like one, it really does look wonky.

Clymene · 17/04/2023 19:08

That said, this is really bad

Clymene · 17/04/2023 19:09

Or is that the dodgy original sill? Grin

Whisper23 · 17/04/2023 19:10

Maybe a photo of the whole bay would show it better.

Cherrybloss0m · 17/04/2023 19:11

Yes it’s a bay. Updated picture; the angle may be wonky as I was lying on the bed.

Give them a chance to finish !? They’ve said they’ll make it right so let them

Cherrybloss0m · 17/04/2023 19:14

@Clymene absolutely could be the original wonky sill as this wasn’t part of their job to replace. @mrsbyers I’m not trying to pick fault, I just want to understand what is reasonable when they come to finish the job- we paid a lot as we went with one of the leading window fitters so want to make sure we know what to expect.
