What's the double kitchen all about?

Name changed because this is clearly identifiable to my friend who I'm puzzling over this with but WTH is going on with the second kitchen???

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/133529630

I know some cultures where spices are heavily used have spice kitchens but they don't kit them out like a whole second kitchen! Do they?

And the description says

The current owners have recently converted the garage to provide a second kitchen which the agents consider could easily be converted for a variety of uses if required. But why did they convert it to a second kitchen? And then move!

I did wonder if it was a separate business kitchen, but the one in the former garage wouldn't pass muster with environmental health as

A) there's only 1 sink - regs require separate sinks for potash and handwash, 1.5 sink at a push

B) there's no splashback (not even an upstand!) so good luck keeping it clean

C) those blinds would raise an eyebrow - you've no chance of sanitising them and they're hanging over a food prep area.

Indeed with the lack of backsplash or upstand I'm really sceptical of the idea it's a dirty / heavy work / desi kitchen either. Seems it has been badly designed for only the lightest of work.

My mum had a kitchen refurb about 15 years ago and decided to have the old one fitted into one half of her double garage.

The reason? I was soon getting married and it'd come in handy.

We're Asian and do a lot of our own catering for such big events. Cooking for my wedding started weeks before the actual event and it meant her nice clean actual kitchen stayed that way.

The garage kitchen hasn't been used since 😂

HappiDaze · 13/04/2023 01:44

The other kitchen is in the studio in the garden

HappiDaze · 13/04/2023 01:45

Ooops no it's not sorry

I was going to say kosher too but there doesn't seem to be any Jewish items elsewhere in the house eg a menorah.

Having watched too much Selling Sunset however having more than one kitchen seems to be a 'thing' and they tend to call one of them a 'chef's kitchen' which I've always assumed was a kitchen with all the gadgets for entertaining rather than a standard kitchen for everyday use😂😂😂. Maybe something like that and they run a catering business from home.

Why would we have a menorah out when it's not Christmas? Do you have your tree out 24/7? Ffs

It's kosher.

You can see from the pics that the furniture in the open plan kitchen/lounge is more modern than in the sitting room opposite the converted kitchen.

My take would be that it was bought to convert the garage to a kitchen for elderly parents and they’ve now moved into care or passed away, and now it’s time to sell.

Also the bedroom with the en-suite has a more elderly parent look to it, so I think granny kitchen/lounge bedroom but it’s either no longer needed or they’re looking for somewhere with a more self contained annex.

sashh · 13/04/2023 04:22

I'm voting kosher, one kitchen for meat the other for milk.

What is that weird long corridor about?

And if you have two kitchens why do you need a microwave in the utility room?

Nandocushion · 13/04/2023 05:14

I'm not sure why so many people are saying Kosher. I knew quite a few observant Jews in my former neighbourhood, and the ones who kept Kosher would simply tear out the existing kitchen when they bought the house and have a new one put in. They didn't have two kitchens, even the ones who had room.

However - and this is probably less likely where you are - wealthier Chinese families often have two kitchens. The less public one is used for often for cooking, especially more pungent dishes.

SD1978 · 13/04/2023 06:03

The two kitchen thing in Judaism is about observing Passover, hot about being kosher. Kosher isn't enough for Passover, and the whole kitchen and all in it would need to be treated to make it suitable for passover (thanks tik tok)

similarminimer · 13/04/2023 06:18

Kosher for sure - not sure why people are confidently saying it's not - there are obviously different degrees of observance.

Much easier to keep 2 completely separate kitchens if you have space, others may have 2 sinks, ovens, sets of pans and plates, some people may just avoid non kosher foods.

SD1978 · 13/04/2023 06:27

@similarminimer - in fairness I'm confidently saying that because all my neighbours are European and orthodox Christians, and it's common round here, and in several Asian communities too!

Beenalongwinter · 13/04/2023 06:28

Multi generation living . The front of the house is old fashioned decor and furniture, likely elderly person, the back is modern for a younger family.

Street view shows a builders skip and a porta loo so the garage has been recently converted.

I suspect the long corridor is about heat retention and secure storage for bikes etc. Plus access to the garden, there is a gate/door either end.

BungleandGeorge · 13/04/2023 06:40

If you look at the number of units and appliances jn the kitchen diner it looks totally insufficient for a family kitchen. It’s trendy to have a nice looking kitchen/living space but not actually that practical. All the mess and smells of cooking probably go in the extra kitchen and the other is just for ‘show’!

EssexMamisoa · 13/04/2023 09:58

as PP have said, possibly a cake baking business or something similar

WillowintheUK · 13/04/2023 13:03

Ok - I’ve worked it out. Like others said, it’s multi generational living. Grandparents use front living room and kitchen. Family with children at the back, with easy access to garden (trampoline out there). Upstairs to back grandparents en suite bedroom, three bedrooms to front with family bathroom for the rest of the family. The long hallway to the side gives each family their own separate access to the property.

AnneKipankitoo · 13/04/2023 13:14

I agree with some others. Several reasons for it are possible.
Breakfast kitchen… the other area is huge if you are up earlier.
Dirty kitchen, for prep, or allergy
Baking kitchen

My parents bought a house from a very house proud couple who had a small kitchen (fridge, worktop, couple of cupboards, sink and cooker) in the garage.
The household used it for cooking anything with a strong smell or for frying.

Brilliant!!! I hate cooking smells. I also hate it when the windows get steamed up from the hob, clearly I need an outdoor kitchen.

Even if you keep kosher meat and milk cannot be eaten at the same meal and need separate pots/pans/cutlery etc.

Some people will have two dishwashers and other wash the meat and milk utensils on separate cycles.

One thing I noticed watching Shtiesel was the tiny kitchens some characters have in their flats all have 2 sinks with a barrier between them.
